9A  My new flat
Instructions and Answer key
You will need: one set of cards per group of students and one copy of the
‘essential features’ worksheet per student

• Put students into groups of three or four. Give each group a set of
cards. Students place the cards face up on the table and match them
to make phrases or compound nouns. Get feedback in open class and
highlight that dishwasher is written as one word, whereas the others
are written as two. Check pronunciation at this stage too.
• Give students a copy of the essential features worksheet. Explain
that students are going to move into a new flat with the other
members of their group. First of all they work individually to decide
which five features are most important to them in a flat and write
the list in the left-hand column on their worksheet. They then have
to reach a decision with their group, make a new group list and write
it in the right-hand column on the worksheet.
The teacher should elicit and write some useful language on the
board for groupwork, such as:
I think we should …
… is better than … because …
If we have … we can/will …
I prefer … because …
• Get open class feedback on the activity and find out which features
were most popular.
