Animation Fundamentals

Task 10-Animated Video

Brief

For this task it was tasked as an group or individual assignment. I decided


to do it individually. The task was to conceptualise, ideate and produce a
full fledged animated short video using the techniques learned and our
own techniques.

Out of the medium of animations available, i decided to do it in 3d


animation. Because currently the popularity of 3d animated movies and
vfx is extremely high, so i wanted to try my hand at it.

My steps

Concept creation --> Moodboard --> Character sketches --> Character


modeling --> 3d Animation --> Post Production --> Final Render

For the works, i chose “blender” as my software of choice as it is free and


opensource while also being very feature rich.

Moodboard and concept


For my animation, i decided to do something of the dystopian theme. So
after much brainstorming, i decided to do a short video about a lonely
droid stuck in a loop by rocks on mars, unable to get out of the loop and
also not knowing it is in the loop. It keeps trying hoping to figure out how to
get out of the place.

Designing the character

For my character, i decided to design a four legged pod style droid that
can walk, but yet not climb above the rocks thats holding it within.

Modelling and rigging the character

Next i hopped on to blender and started modelling the character.

I made the legs and then made a 2 joint bone system within the legs to
felicitate movement.

Next for the body, i just used a simple cube, and attached the legs to the
body using a fake joint

After joining the leg to the body, i connected the armatures within the legs
to the body to make it one single object

After the joints and the movements were defined i went ahead and added
the legs to the other sides and defined the walking movement.

To make the movements more natural, i added a random movement to


the body so that it makes small random movements in different
directions to felicitate the movement to be more natural.

Here is a render of the final character after adding textures.

Animating and post production

After creating an environment, i started animating the movement of the


character around the environment. Once all the animation was done, it
was preliminarily rendered out and music and text overlays were added
using Adobe premiere pro.
