NOTES.
Part 4 / Chapter 3 / Section 1

7,1 Shaft Diameters

The least diameter of propulsion shafting is to be determined by the following equation

Where:
K= 1,25 Shaft design factor ( 4-3-1/Table 1 and 4-3-2/Table 2 see Appendix)
H= 99,60 kW Power at rated speed
R= 965,52 Rpm Rpm at rated speed
C1 = 416,40 560 for vessels 45.7 m in length and over
472.5 for vessels 20 m and over, but below 45.7 m , where he material of the shaft is Grade 2 and the shaft is protected
540 for vessels 20 m and over, but below 45.7 m, for all other materials and unprotected Grade 2 shaft material
416.4 for vessels below 20 m
C2 = 160,00
2
U= 600,00 N/mm Minimum specified ultimate tensile strength of the material, in N/mm2.
For calculation purposes, U is not to be taken as more than the following :
415,00 N/mm2 For carbon, and alloy steel tail shafts fitted with salt-water lubricated bearings and non-continuous shaft liners
600,00 N/mm2 For carbon, alloy and austenitic stainless steel tail shafts fitted with oil lubricated bearings or with continuous shaft liners
930,00 N/mm2 For other shaft sections and for tail shafts manufactured of age-hardened martensitic stainless steels, higher-strength austenitic stainless steels such
as ASTM Type XM-19, XM-21, or XM-28, or other high strength alloy materials.

The least diameter of propulsion shafting :

= 47,97 mm ACTUAL = 50,00 mm OK

9 KEY

The key material is to be of equal or higher strength than the shaft material.he effective area of the key in shear is to be not less than A, given below. The effective area is
to be the gross area subtracted by materials removed by saw cuts, set screw holes, chamfer, etc., and is to exclude the portion of the key in way of spooning of the key way

2
Shear area of key not less : = 541,12 mm A=40mmX15m ACTUAL = 600,00 mm2 OK
m

Where:

D= 47,97 mm Line shaft diameter

rm = 40,00 mm Shaft radius at mid-length of the key
Ys = 600,00 N/mm2 Specified yield strength of shaft material
2
Yk = 600,00 N/mm Specified yield strength of Key material

19 SOLID COUPLINGS

19,1 Fitted Bolts

The minimum diameter of fitted shaft coupling bolts is to be determined by the following equation.

= 7,70 mm ACTUAL = 8,00 mm OK

Where:

D= 47,97 mm Line shaft diameter

U= 600,00 N/mm2 Minimum specific tensile strength of shaft material
C= 160,00 Specified yield strength of shaft material
N= 8 Bolts Number of bolts fitted in one coupling
B= 180,00 mm Bolt circle diameter
UB = 415,00 N/mm2 Minimum specific tensile strength of bolt material
Not less than 600 N/mm2 But not more than 1.7 U = 1020 N/mm2 or 1000 N/mm2 whichever is less

19,5 Flanges

The thickness of coupling flanges is not to be less than : 9,59 mm ACTUAL = 10,00 mm OK
Whichever is greater
1 7,70 mm The minimum required diameter of the coupling bolts or
2 9,59 mm 0.2 times D
Part 4 / Chapter 3 / Section 1

1. Rough calculation of required Bollard Pull in case of ship-shaped tows:

= 0,35 Tons

Where:
R1 = F x S x V^2 = 300,26
F= Coefficient = 0,01
S= Wetted underwater area in ft^2 = 992,59 ft2
S= 1,025 x Lpp x (Cb x B + 1.7 x T ) m2 = 92,21 m2
Lpp = Length Between Perpend. (m) = 16,23 m
T= Draught (m) = 1,45 m
B= Width (m) = 5,70 m
Cb = Block Coefficient = 0,54
V= Towing speed Knots = 5,50 Knots
* Ft^2 = m2 x 10,764262

R2 = D^2 x V^2 x N = 12,78

D = propeller diameter of the tow = 0,65
V = Towing speed in knots = 5,50 Knots
N = Number of Propeller = 1,00

R3 = 0,1 x R2 = 1,28 Coefficient for resistance of towing gear

By using this formula, which is providing a Bollard Pull value corresponding with the hydrodynamic resistan
ce of the ship in calm waters, bear in mind that other factors like roughness of the submerged area, yawing
of the tow, aerodynamic resistance and sea state are disregarded. A factor of 2 - 3, depending to the
circumstances, seems adequate.

Total R = = 0,35 Tons x 3 = 1,05 Tons

2. ENGINE FOUNDATION STRENGTH

WOOD
B=120mm
2.1 STUDS STRENGTH
According the above min total shear forces acts on the bolts = 1,05tons * 2 (sf) = 2,1 tons / 6 = 0,35tons /stud.
According the below table max shear capacity / bolt = 22,7 KN = 2,21 TF > 0,35tons (OK)

2.2 WOODEN FOUNDATION

SM = 720 cm3 ( Section Modulus )
Sf = 2 Safety factor

From a) and b)

c) = 96,77 Kg/Cm =9,68 Kg/Cm2 Permissib. load with SF2 > = 3,13 Kg/Cm2

d) = 0,24 Cm ( Max Deflection on Beam Center )

TOTAL ENGINE WEIGHT = = 800,00 Kg

PAD NUMBERS = = 4,00 Pcs
WEIGHT / PAD = = 200,00 Kg , PAD AREA = 64,00 Cm2 , PRESS. = 3,13 Kg/Cm2
