The need to strengthen and reposition Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) for
actualization of the objectives of the scheme cannot be over emphasized. SIWES was established by
Industrial Training Funds (ITF) in the year 1973 to solve problem of lack of adequate proper skills for
employment of tertiary institution. Siwes started in 1974 with 748students from 11 institutions of higher
learning participating. By 1978, participation on the scheme increase to about 5000 students from 32
institutions. The supervising agencies NUC and NBTE, operated the scheme in conjunction with their
irrespective institutions during the period.

The increase in knowledge and technological advancement has put serious pressure on labour content
of productive activities through substitution of labour with high technology and machine. With
increasing technological development in the Nation, high technical and scientific skills are required if
graduates of our institution are to remain relevant and competitive.

To achieve this, successive Nigerian Government have consistently tried to make Education more
relevant and appropriate through education policies, budgetary provision and strategies that will allow
for formal schooling complement with experience through SIWES. SIWES, among other grains, provides
Employers of Labour with graduates ready for the world of work thereby, reducing cost of initial
training.

SIWES is a skills Training Programme designed to expose and prepare students of Nigeria Tertiary
Institutions to the Industrial Work situation they are likely to meet after graduation.

The need for the scheme was as a result of growing concern among industrialist; that graduates of
Nigerian Institutions of higher learning lacked adequate practical skills required in the work setting and
could not meet the needs of Employers of Labour.

It should be noted that participation in SIWES is necessary prerequisite for the award of National
Diploma, National Certificate of Education and Bachelor Degree in specific disciplines in accordance with
the extant policy of government on education.

Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that may not
be available in their institutions.
Prepare students for the Industrial Work Situation they are to meet after graduation.
