Hydrostatic Force on Plane Curved Surfaces
• To solve for FH, project the curved surface unto a vertical plane and solve using the
equation for a plane vertical surfaces. The equation for yR is also the same for this case.
𝐹𝐹𝐻𝐻 = γℎ𝑐𝑐 𝐴𝐴
𝐼𝐼𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥
𝑦𝑦𝑅𝑅 = 𝑦𝑦𝑐𝑐 +
𝑦𝑦𝑐𝑐 𝐴𝐴
• To solve for FV, multiply the specific weight of the substance to the volume of fluid above
the curved surface extending to the free surface
𝐹𝐹𝑣𝑣 = γ𝑉𝑉
• The resultant force, FR, acts through the centroid of the volume

Buoyancy
• The upward force that a fluid exerts on a body immersed in it is called the buoyant force
𝐹𝐹𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 = γ𝑉𝑉𝐷𝐷
Where: γ is the unit weight of the fluid, VD is the volume displaced or volume of the body below the liquid surface
To solve problems in buoyancy, identify the forces acting and apply
conditions of static equilibrium

1. An iceberg having specific gravity of 0.92 is floating on saltwater of SG 1.03. If the volume of ice above the
water surface is 1000 m3, what is the total volume of the ice?
