PUBLIC HEALTH ENGINEERING.

4.1 Approach to planning

The Plumbing services for the project shall be designed keeping in view the following:

4.1.1 Requirement of adequate and equal pressure of water in toilets, floor pantries, kitchen and
other designated areas.

4.1.2 The water storage tank (underground) capacity shall be adequate to ensure availability of
water for 1 day.

4.1.3 Recycling of treated waste water (from sewage treatment plant) for, flushing and
horticulture water use.

4.1.4 Implementation of requirements of MOEF relating to rainwater harvesting, water

conservation, use etc

4.1.5 Drainage and water supply provision for Landscape area.

`
4.1.6 Water conservation using low flow fixtures.

4.2(b) Water requirement and Water balance

It is estimated that the daily water requirement for the complete project based on the number of
users and for other services will be approximately 73KLPD, in which 29KL for flushing can be
recycled from STP. Remaining 44KL is required from different sources per day.

4.3 Water source:

It is expected that the daily potable fresh water requirement for the official
development shall be met through BWWSSB; Potable tanker supply shall be resorted only if
BWWSSB yield is not sufficient to meet the water requirement.
4.4 Water storage tanks:

It is proposed to provide half day for raw water storage capacity and one day
for domestic storage capacity on underground based on ultimate requirement. The incoming main
from bore well water supply line shall be led into raw water tanks; thereafter the water shall be
treated and stored in domestic water storage tanks. The water storage capacities of the tanks are
as follows:

UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK CAPACITY (in Liters)

Raw Water tank- 200000 Ltrs

OVER HEAD TANK CAPACITY(in Liters)

Domestic water tank

DORMITORY 25000
OFFICE 10000

4.5 Water distribution scheme:

The water distribution system for domestic and for other uses will be by gravity from the
overhead tanks located on each Blocks. Water from the Underground Treated Domestic water
Tanks will be transferred by a Non return valve controller into an Overhead Tanks at the Terrace
level on each block which in turn will over flow to the domestic over head tanks of the respective
blocks. When the water level reaches a mid level point the sensors will trigger the pumps in the
pump room to start and initiate filling of over head tanks...For Flushing purpose, STP treated water
will be used, treated water will be transferred by a set of pumps (1 running and 1 standby)
controlled by an automatic level controller into an Overhead Flushing Tanks water .The user points
at all floor levels will be fed by gravity from these domestic/ flushing tanks.
4.6 Soil/waste disposal:

The drainage system considered in the design is a basic 2-pipe system in which
the soil & waste pipes are distinct and separate. The soil pipes shall be connected to the soil stack
and all waste appliances shall be connected to an independent waste stack. All waste appliances
shall be provided with deep seal traps. Soil and waste pipe to be connected to Anti symphonic pipe
for vent at each toilet level
Vent system shall be designed to facilitate escape of gases and odour from all parts of sanitary
and waste system to the atmosphere at a point above the building and to allow admittance of air to
all part of the system, so that siphonage, aspiration or back pressure conditions do not cause loss
of seal at traps.
All drain piping shall be under sunken slabs. The stacks will be connected to a horizontal header at
the ceiling of Stilt / basement. Then these pipes would then be connected to an external sewerage
network and then led to a Tertiary Sewage Treatment Plant. The Treated Effluent from STP would
be used for Flushing Purpose and for horticulture purpose.

4.7 Sewage generation:

The total Sewage Generated for the entire project

100% of Flushing consumption: 28,527 Ltrs
90% of Domestic consumption: 39,677 Ltrs
Total : 68,204 Ltrs
Proposed sewage treatment plant: 70 KLD
Sewage treatment plant (STP):

It is proposed to install a sewage treatment plant, in order to conserve

water. The sewage treatment plant will be designed to ensure that treated effluent characteristics
are well below / within the permissible limits, even under varying flow conditions, which are typical
for such systems. This implies that the selected process will be able to withstand the peak load
situation.
The sewage treatment plant shall treat the domestic effluent generated from the toilets, hand
wash, pantry etc, and re use the water for toilet flushing and landscaping.
The sewage treatment plant is designed taking the following parameters in to account:

CHARACTERISTICS OF RAW SEWAGE:

BOD 250 to 300 Mg / Ltr.

COD 400 to 600 mg / Ltr
TSS 200 to 350 mg / Ltr
PH 7 to 8.0
Oil & Grease 30 to 45 mg / Ltr.

TREATED EFFLUENT QUALITY:

BOD < 20 Mg / Ltr.
COD < 60 Mg / Ltr.
SS < 10 Mg / Ltr.
pH 6.5 to 7.5.
Oil & Grease < 5 Mg / Ltr.

A brief description of the process involved in treating the sewage is given below:

The sewage treatment plant is designed with a capacity to handle 70 cu.m (approx.) of soil water
from the building.
The proposed sewage treatment plant is of “Diffused Aeration type system with
activated sludge process. It envisaged collecting all the sewage water through piping network with
battery of inspection chambers and manholes and taken into a raw sewage water collection sump /
equalisation tank through a bar screen chamber. The equalisation tank will have a retention
capacity of approximately 9 times the flow rate. Sewage from this tank is constantly pumped to
Aeration tank using effluent transfer pumps to achieve continuous re - circulation arrangement of
the contents of the equalisation tank.
The aeration tank will have a detention time varying from 8 to 10 times the flow
rate for continuous aeration. Aerated waste will be allowed to settle in a secondary settling tank
and over flow is let in to semi treated effluent sump. The sludge will be partly fed back to aeration
tank by pumping and the remaining sludge pass through sludge handling system consisting of
automatic filter press, sludge thickener, dry cake handling equipment poly electrolyte dosing for
disposal. Dried cake will be removed and used as manure for plants. From semi treated water
collection sump, water will be pumped through activated carbon filter, pressure sand filter and
pumped and stored in a treated water tank used for landscaping after disinfection. From this tank,
treated water will be used for landscaping purpose with separate network of pipelines and pumping
system. A part of the treated water will be earmarked for toilet flushing and will be fed through ultra
filtration process prior to feed to toilet cisterns. The treated effluent from the Sewage Treatment
Plant will be used for irrigation and landscaping purposes. If filter press or sludge drying beds are
not opted, periodic cleaning of sludge shall be carried out by tankers.
