INTERNET BANKING SYSTEM

ABSTRACT-

This project is aimed at developing an Online Banking for customer. The system is an online
application that can be accessed throughout the organization and outside as well with proper
login provided.

The project has been planned to be having the view of distributed architecture, with
centralized storage of the database. The application for the storage of the data has been
planned. Using the constructs of Oracle 10g and all the user interfaces have been designed
using the JAVA. The database connectivity is planned using the “Database” methodology.
The standards of security and data protective mechanism have been given a big choice for
proper usage. The application takes care of different modules and their associated reports,
which are produced as per the applicable strategies and standards that are put forwarded by
the administrative staff.

The entire project has been developed keeping in view of the distributed client server
computing technology, in mind. The specification has been normalized up to 3NF to
eliminate all the anomalies that may arise due to the database transaction that are executed by
the general users and the organizational administration. The user interfaces are browser
specific to give distributed accessibility for the overall system. The internal database has been
selected as Oracle 10g.The basic constructs of table spaces, clusters and indexes have been
exploited to provide higher consistency and reliability for the data storage. The Oracle 10g
was a choice as it provides the constructs of high-level reliability and security. The total front
end was dominated using the HTML 5. At all proper levels high care was taken to check that
the system manages the data consistency with proper business rules or validations. The
database connectivity was planned using the latest “Database connection” technology
provided by Oracle. The authentication and authorization were crosschecked at all the
relevant stages. The user level accessibility has been restricted into two zones namely.

INTERNET BANKING SYSTEM

EXISTING SYSTEM

The Online Banking suite provides a global accounting foundation that provides the all-
private banks with electronic banking facilities. It allows client of private banks to carry out
their day-to-day banking transactions.

The developed system is an innovation in the area of private banking. In the existing system
the no. of staff required for completing the work is more, while the new system requires
lesser staffs generally.

The data entry process requires the data on the paper, which is then feed into the application
by the operator while doing so; the data entry operator has to look into the paper again
&again and thus the chances of in accuracies in the typed contents increases. Also, the
process includes higher transportation cost, increased handling cost, more time delays, low
accuracy, more usage of resources like registers, books, papers, etc.

The existing system is having many problems such as security problems, more human
involvement which is a time-consuming process with many manual calculations. It even
includes the machine damage and signature verification process for secured transactions
which allows the customers and banks to waste their valuable time and resources. The major
problem in online banking system is unauthorized user access with fake passwords. The
hackers are trying to hack the user accounts and are performing different unauthorized
transactions.

Following are the functional needs of the software: -

1. Customer must have a valid user ID and password to login to the system.
2. After the valid user logs in, the system shows the present balance in that particular
account number.
3. Customer can perform transactions like deposit and withdrawal from his account.
4. Proper help to be provided as and when requested by the customer.

DISADVANTAGES OF EXISTING SYSTEM

1. Technology issues.
2. Security issues.
3. Inefficient at complex transactions.
4. No relationship with personal banker.
5. Inconvenient to make deposits.

7
INTERNET BANKING SYSTEM

PROPOSED SYSTEM

The proposed system is used to maintain an account record of all the customers of a Bank by
storing entries for customer (i.e., account details), investments and showing their account
summary. It also allows the customer to view their account without going to the bank and
transaction can be done online. The customer need to login to his account by the provided
username and id through the bank.

The project has the following parts:

1. The user login, through which the customer logs in his/her account to view his
account.
2. After login the customer can view his account summary, download forms online.
3. A customer can open a new account online through his previous account.
4. Customer can transfer the money from his account to the other customer’s account.
5. The changed username and password can be sent through the SMS.
6. He/she can change his profile details.

The proposed system is highly computerized in which the data related to user accounts will
be secured high with high accuracy that even reduces the machine damage and human made
errors and this existing system is highly efficient to offer best services to the customers as
well as banks because it has user friendly access that consumes less time when compared
with normal banking system.

ADVANTAGES OF PROPOSED SYSTEM

1. Quick, authenticated access to accounts via the desktop.
2. Easily scalable to grow with changing system requirement.
3. Enterprise-wide access to information.
4. Improved information security, restricting unauthorized access.
5. Minimize Storage Space

In manual system, much storage space for data files is required so to overcome this problem,
on automated well managed database is developed for saving storage space. This s/w saves
space and stores information efficiently. It ends the burden of having large manual filing
storage system.

SYSTEM ANALYSIS
‘Internet banking’ or ‘online banking’ is a system which allow individuals to perform regular
banking activities via Internet. Customers can keep tracks of all the banking issues by
accessing their account online at their own convenience and have no worries about sticked in
a traffic jam or queuing up in a long line of customers at the counter for services. By using
internet banking, Account information can be accessed anytime, day or night, and can be
done from anywhere. Internet banking provides 24 hours services and enable customers to
perform all routine transactions, such as bill payment, print out statement, fund transfer,
balance inquiries, stop-payment requests, view recent transaction and credit card payments.
Most of the process are simplified such as bill payments where future payments can be
scheduled to occur automatically. Almost all the banks in Malaysia have their own secured
website for internet banking transactions which enable customers to perform routine banking
transaction as mentioned above. Although the concept and functions of each bank are similar,
the systems are varying and designed according to every bank system requirement.

SECURITY IN SOFTWARE

System security refers to various validations on data in form of checks and controls to avoid
the system from failing. It is always important to ensure that only valid data is entered and
only valid operations are performed on the system. The system employees two types of
checks and controls:

A. CLIENT-SIDE VALIDATION

Various client-side validations are used to ensure on the client side that only valid data is
entered. Client-side validation saves server time and load to handle invalid data. Some checks
imposed are:

 VBScript in used to ensure those required fields are filled with suitable data only.
Maximum lengths of the fields of the forms are appropriately defined.
 Forms cannot be submitted without filling up the mandatory data so that manual mistakes
of submitting empty fields that are mandatory can be sorted out at the client side to save
the server time and load.
 Tab-indexes are set according to the need and taking into account the ease of user while
working with the system.
10
INTERNET BANKING SYSTEM

B. SERVER-SIDE VALIDATION

Some checks cannot be applied at client side. Server-side checks are necessary to save the
system from failing and intimating the user that some invalid operation has been performed
or the performed operation is restricted. Some of the server-side checks imposed is:

 Server-side constraint has been imposed to check for the validity of primary key and
foreign key. A primary key value cannot be duplicated. Any attempt to duplicate the
primary value results into a message intimating the user about those values through the
forms using foreign key can be updated only of the existing foreign key values.
 User is intimating through appropriate messages about the successful operations or
exceptions occurring at server side.
 Various Access Control Mechanisms have been built so that one user may not agitate
upon another. Access permissions to various types of users are controlled according to the
organizational structure. Only permitted users can log on to the system and can have
access according to their category. User- name, passwords and permissions are controlled
o the server side.
 Using server-side validation, constraints on several restricted operations are imposed.

UNDERSTANDING FEASIBILITY

Feasibility study means the analysis of problem to determine if it can be solved effectively. In
other words, it is the study of the possibilities of the proposed system it studies the work
ability, impact on the organization ability to meet user’s need and efficient use of resources.

Three aspects in which the system has to be feasible are: -

A. ECONOMICAL FEASIBILITY

The economic analysis checks for the high investment incurred on the system. It evaluates
development & implementing charges for the proposed “Banking Project”. The S/W used for
the development is easily available at minimal cost & the database applied is freely available
hence it results in low-cost implementation.

11
INTERNET BANKING SYSTEM

B. TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY

This aspect concentrates on the concept of using Computer Meaning, “Mechanization” of

human works. Thus, the automated solution leads to the need for a technical feasibility study.

The focus on the platform used database management &users for that S/W.

The proposed system doesn’t require an in-depth technical knowledge as the system
development is simple and easy to understand. The S/W (VB.NET) used makes the system
user friendly (GUI). The result obtain should be true in the real time conditions.

C. BEHAVIOURAL FEASIBILITY

Behavioral feasibility deals with the runtime performance of the S/W the proposed system
must score higher than the present in the behavioral study. The S/W should have end user in
mind when the system is designed while designing s/w the programmer should be aware of
the conditions user’s Knowledge input, output, calculations etc.

The s/w contains only a minimum no. of bugs. Care should be also taken to avoid non-
working means &t buttons.

D. ALGORITHMS

Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)- AES is implemented in software and hardware

throughout the world to encrypt sensitive data. It is essential for government computer
security, cybersecurity and electronic data protection.

12
INTERNET BANKING SYSTEM

E. ARCHITECTURE

The term architectural neutral seems to be weird, but yes Java is an architectural neutral
language as well. The growing popularity of networks makes developers think distributed. In
the world of network, it is essential that the applications must be able to migrate easily to
different computer systems. Not only to computer systems but to a wide variety of hardware

architecture and operating system architectures as well.  The Java compiler does this by
generating byte code instructions, to be easily interpreted on any machine and to be easily
translated into native machine code on the fly. The compiler generates an architecture-neutral
object file format to enable a Java application to execute anywhere on the network and then
the compiled code is executed on many processors, given the presence of the Java runtime
system. Hence Java was designed to support applications on network. This feature of Java has
thrived the programming language.

SYSTEM DESIGN

Software design sits at the technical kernel of the software engineering process and is applied
regardless of the development paradigm and area of application. Design is the first step in the
development phase for any engineered product or system. The designer’s goal is to produce a
model or representation of an entity that will later be built. Beginning, once system
requirement has been specified and analyzed, system design is the first of the three technical
activities -design, code and test that is required to build and verify software.

The importance can be stated with a single word “Quality”. Design is the place where quality
is fostered in software development. Design provides us with representations of software that
can assess for quality. Design is the only way that we can accurately translate a customer’s
view into a finished software product or system. Software design serves as a foundation for
all the software engineering steps that follow. Without a strong design we risk building an
unstable system – one that will be difficult to test, one whose quality cannot be assessed until
the last stage.

During design, progressive refinement of data structure, program structure, and procedural
details are developed reviewed and documented. System design can be viewed from either
technical or project management perspective. From the technical point of view, design is
comprised of four activities – architectural design, data structure design, interface design and
procedural design.

UML DIAGRAMS

UML, which stands for Unified Modeling Language, is a way to visually represent the
architecture, design, and implementation of complex software systems. When you’re writing
code, there are thousands of lines in an application, and it’s difficult to keep track of the
relationships and hierarchies within a software system. UML diagrams divide that software
system into components and subcomponents.

UML is a standardized modelling language that can be used across different programming
languages and development processes, so the majority of software developers will understand
it and be able to apply it to their work.

14
INTERNET BANKING SYSTEM

Though many engineers dread diagrams, they’re useful in an Agile development

environment: they keep development productive and focused. Instead of thinking them as just
a “nice to have,” treat your UML diagrams as core aspects of documentation. UML diagrams
can help engineering teams:

 Bring new team members or developers switching teams up to speed quickly.

 Navigate source code.
 Plan out new features before any programming takes place.
 Communicate with technical and non-technical audiences more easily.

However, diagrams that don’t evolve with a project are useless, so it’s necessary to have
constantly evolving diagrams. Lucid chart, a cloud-based diagramming solution, makes this
process easier. Lucid chart can generate UML sequence diagram from text markup, which
makes diagramming automatic and elastic.

It is the general-purpose modeling language used to visualize the system. It is a graphical

language that is standard to the software industry for specifying, visualizing, constructing,
and documenting the artifacts of the software systems, as well as for business modeling.

1. Class diagram-

Class diagrams are the main building blocks of every object-oriented method. The class
diagram can be used to show the classes, relationships, interface, association, and
collaboration. UML is standardized in class diagrams.

intemet Banking Class Diagram describes the structure of a internet Banking classes, their
attributes operations (or methods), and the relationships among objects. The main classes of
the internet Banking are Banks, Credit Debits, Fund Transfers, Services, User.

2. Activity diagram-

Activity Diagrams is used to illustrate the flow of control in a system and refer to the steps
involved in the execution of a use case. We model sequential and concurrent activities using
activity diagrams. An activity diagram focuses on condition of flow and the sequence in
which it happens. We describe or depict what causes a particular event using an activity
diagram.

This is the Activity UML diagram of internet Banking System which shows the flows
between the activity of Services, Fund Transfer, Debit, Payee, Credit. The main activity
involved in this UML Activity Diagram of internet Banking System are as follows

 Services Activity
 Fund Transfer Activity
 Debit Activity
 Payee Activity
 Credit Activity

3. Sequence Diagrams –

A sequence diagram simply depicts interaction between objects in a sequential order i.e., the
order in which these interactions take place. We can also use the terms event diagrams or
event scenarios to refer to a sequence diagram. Sequence diagrams describe how and in what
order the objects in a system function. These diagrams are widely used by businessmen and
software developers to document and understand requirements for new and existing systems.

4. Use-case diagrams-

A use case diagram is a graphical depiction of a user's possible interactions with a system. A
use case diagram shows various use cases and different types of users the system has and will
often be accompanied by other types of diagrams as well. The use cases are represented by
either circles or ellipses.

UML use case diagrams are ideal for:

 Representing the goals of system-user interactions

 Defining and organizing functional requirements in a system
 Specifying the context and requirements of a system
 Modelling the basic flow of events in a use case

5. ER diagram-

An Entity Relationship (ER) Diagram is a type of flowchart that illustrates how “entities”
such as people, objects or concepts relate to each other within a system. ER Diagrams are
most often used to design or debug relational databases in the fields of software engineering,
business information systems, education and research. Also known as ERDs or ER Models,
they use a defined set of symbols such as rectangles, diamonds, ovals and connecting lines to
depict the interconnectedness of entities, relationships and their attributes. They mirror
grammatical structure, with entities as nouns and relationships as verbs.

 The relation upon the system is structure through a conceptual ER-Diagram, which not
only specifics the existential entities but also the standard relations through which the
system exists and the cardinalities that are necessary for the system state to continue.

 The entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) depicts the relationship between the data objects.
The ERD is the notation that is used to conduct the date modeling activity the attributes of
each data object noted is the ERD can be described resign a data object description.

 The set of primary components that are identified by the ERD are

 Data object

 Relationships

 Attributes

 Various types of indicators.

The primary purpose of the ERD is to represent data objects and their relationships.
