Last day of Term 3
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
Happy Father’s Day to all the daddies out there! We hope you had an amazing day and were pampered! Please see a couple of special pictures of my cherubs treating their
daddy. I felt very special 😊 We also know Father’s Day can be difficult for some and we hope you had an opportunity to reflect and remember loved ones.

The Week That Was

Well, another remote learning week rolls by. It was certainly an interesting week with the lovely spring weather, what a difference it can make. Where has it gone now
though? Of course, we also had confirmation remote learning will continue until the end of term. Although, it’s not the news we all wanted to hear at least we now have
certainty around the last two weeks of term, allowing us to plan accordingly. Given the extension of the lockdown and the impact this can have on our community, ELT felt it
was appropriate to offer a ‘recharge day’ for our staff and students. More information about the day and arrangements for Y7-10 & Y11-12 teachers are below.

NAPLAN
The NAPLAN Year 7 & 9 literacy and numeracy test results were released last week. Overall, many successes to celebrate 😊. Well
done to everyone involved! To help us digest the results, our very own Kath Sobey has put together a two-pager about our NAPLAN
headlines. The document can be found HERE. To talk through the NAPLAN headlines Kath has organized an optional Zoom session
for staff to attend on Monday. Information below:

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Please see an email from Bryan Cook last week regarding wonderful PL opportunities. We have identified two amazing
professional learning opportunities that I would like to bring to your attention. I have provided an outline of each program, and
the eligibility criteria. If you would like further information, please get in touch with me, or click on the links below:

Teaching Excellence Program:

The Teaching Excellence Program is the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership's flagship program for highly skilled
teachers from Catholic, government and independent schools. Developed in collaboration with each sector, the program is a
unique opportunity to strengthen and extend your evidence-based teacher practice.

You will have the opportunity to deepen teaching excellence and advance your professional practice through disciplinary knowledge, the science of learning and contemporary
pedagogies.
As part of the program, you can expect to:
• build expertise with other curious teachers to sharpen your knowledge, skills, and dispositions
• share knowledge and make connections as part of expert cross-sector networks
• contribute to our professional knowledge as a leading educational system
• enhance and demonstrate dispositions that support your ongoing professional development and growth.
You will explore the teaching and learning approaches that research suggests are essential to supporting young people to thrive at school and in their contemporary world.
You will be supported to conduct practitioner inquiries in your classroom, enhancing students’ learning and further improving your teaching practice.

Eligibility
The Teaching Excellence Program is designed for highly skilled teachers with a minimum of 3 years’ teaching experience from Victorian government, independent and Catholic
schools. The program is suited to teachers with a classroom focused orientation and who demonstrate exceptional teaching in their selected discipline area; it does not have a
focus on leadership development. The Department, Independent Schools Victoria and Catholic Education Commission of Victoria deliver leadership professional learning
programs for their respective sectors.
Note: be sure to read the detailed information on the application process, including eligibility requirements, before applying.

Applications close 12 noon, Wednesday 15 September

Inclusive education opportunity for teachers

The initiative aims to promote an advanced understanding of inclusive educational needs, supporting the success of students with disability and diverse educational needs
through evidence-based best practice. The initiative contributes to a long-term vision for all Victorian government schools to have a masters-qualified inclusive education
teacher, promoting inclusive education understanding and supporting a school environment for all students, regardless of abilities and backgrounds. The initiative covers the
tuition fees associated with a full-fee domestic place and a contribution of up to $7000 to support a teacher replacement. Successful applicants will complete a Master level
course, specialising in either Inclusive Education or Applied Behaviour Analysis.

Eligibility:
For eligibility requirements, guidelines and the application process, refer to the Master of Inclusive Education Initiative website.
Applications close 12 noon, Monday 27 September.
The Week Ahead
RECHARGE DAY – FRIDAY 10 SEPTEMBER
Lockdown 6.0 has been longer than we all anticipated, and the impact this has on our sense of choice and balance in our lives is
material. Out of recognition for this, Friday 10 September will be a designated staff recharge day. Years 7-10 academic classes will
be cancelled, and staff should use the time they get back to do what they need to, to sustain their wellbeing during lockdown.

Y7-10 Classes
7-10 students will be expected to attend their STARR class. STARR teachers should use this time to build connections and create
levity with students.

Y11-12 Classes
Due to the importance of minimising disruptions to learning for the VCE and VCAL students, all Y11 and 12 classes will continue as normal and Y11 and Y12 students are
expected to attend. If you are a Y11 & Y12 teacher, we know you are working tirelessly to ensure assessments and deadlines are met at this crucial time of the year. Therefore,
as you know your classes best, on Friday you can decide how best to run your class. You can either:
• teach all your lessons as normal
• teach part and set an activity for the remainder of the lesson
• set asynchronous work
If you need to teach all your Y11 & Y12 classes and won’t get an opportunity to recharge on Friday, please contact Alan to see how else you can be supported.

For 7-10 teachers, outside of STARR class and the cuppa with a colleague chat in the morning, what your day looks like is up to you. You may choose to spend some/all this
time for professional practice; but this is your call. As an ELT, our ask of you is that you do what will make you feel ready to take on the final week of term energised and
centred.

CUPPA WITH A COLLEAGUE

At 9:30am, a ‘cuppa with a colleague’ session will run for those that would like to say g’day to colleagues and maintain the social
connections that we miss when away from school. This is optional, but all staff are encouraged to attend.

Thursday next week. These activities are optional and are appropriate for both Junior and Senior classes.
Lunchtime activities
• Wellbeing activities will be running every day (Mon – Thurs) through Senior and Junior lunch breaks; details of these activities will be shared via Compass throughout
the week.
Resources for staff
• For information and resources on how to best support conversations around mental health in your classes, please review this DET resource “Quick Guide to Student
Mental Health and Wellbeing”. As always, the Wellbeing Team are available to support you through any challenges or queries. If you have any concern for a student’s
wellbeing, please follow our usual Wellbeing Referral process, by contacting the Wellbeing Team directly (all staff in the CC line) as soon as possible for immediate
concerns, or the student’s Team Leader to discuss a Wellbeing Referral for general support.

LOCAL CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE 2021/2022 NOMINATIONS

Melton Secondary College utilises a committee, called the Local Consultative Committee (LCC), as the gateway for consultation
at the college. This committee acts in accordance with the 2017 VGSA default consultative arrangements, outlined in 12.4.d of
the VGSA*.
A consultative committee is active for a 12-month period, from the start of Term 4 to the end of Term 3. The committee is
comprised of
• The principal
• Two nominees of the principal
• Two staff members elected by and from the total staff
• One union nominee determined by the union(s) at the school (two in the case of a co-presidency)

ELT are calling on nominations for the two staff members – one teacher and one education support staff - to represent the staff body and form the 2021/2022 LCC. Please
send your nominations through to Virginia by Thursday September 9. You can self-nominate.

Thank you to Temu Maugu and Sandra Hutchinson, as the outgoing staff representatives, for their contribution to the LCC over the past 12 months.

For more information on the experience of being on the LCC, please speak to Temu or Sandra to learn about their first-hand experience. Any remaining questions can be
directed to Emily. For more information about the consultative arrangements, you can read the formal document here.

*This is in lieu of the 2021 VGSA, which is yet to be finalised. On release of the updated VGSA, these consultative arrangements will be reviewed and amended as required.
LEARNING WITH IPADS
Don’t forget to sign up to our MSC Showbie page. This page has a range of resources to help you out including how-to
videos, professional learning recordings and student work examples. The class code is AYAW3

Learning recordings found on our Showbie page.

FACILITIES UPDATE
To support our growing student cohort, we will be receiving a four-classroom, double-storey portable building to be ready for use next
year. The relocatable buildings are built to an energy efficient design, including double-glazed windows and improved thermal and
acoustic insulation. Works will start on installing the building over the coming months, and the anticipated (not confirmed) site
location is next to the current W portables.
