Review Questions

1. What was innovative about the first skyscraper?

-It was the first type of building to use a steel frame capable of supporting not only the
walls but also the immense weight of a building.

2. Explain the relationship between science, engineering, and technology.

- Science is the first part of the process where scientists examine the natural world and
develop theories based on their observations, then, this information gained from
scientists gives a base of knowledge which fuels engineers to create and design our
world. Lastly, we find the technologies which are products created by engineers used to
tackle our needs and necessities.

3. How are the goals of an engineer different from those of a scientist's?

-Because engineers’ goals are to find solutions for the problems and the needs of
people, and scientist’s goals are to basically understand and predict and document our
world by investigation.

4. Why is a product that does not function as designed an important part of

iteration?

-Its an important part of iteration because this process consists in designing something
and when a problem is found, its necessary to go back in the process and try to make
changes in the design. Itineration allows engineers to try new thing and find the best
possible solution.

5. How did industrialism change society?

-Industrialism changed our society in a lot of aspects. Firstly, it provoked a revolution in many
jobs which made the starting point of the use of machines that require specialized people to
supervise them. It also incorporated the new chain production, that meant the increment of
production items which started to lower its price, this was very revolutionary because it made
easier for people without money ti acquire and satisfy their needs. The last one would be the
world’s population increment due to the upgrade of the standard of living.

Critical Thinking Questions
Alejandro Terés Torres

1. Think about the science you have studied in the past or are currently
studying. Give an example of something you have learned in science that an
engineer might use to solve a problem.

- Science builds knowledge of how the natural world works, engineers use that
knowledge to develop useful technologies, and these technologies may, in turn, provide
key observations and tools that help scientists build even more knowledge of the natural
world. Like for example solar panels.

2. Find an object in your community that is the result of engineering. Explain how

this object solves a social need.

-Basically, any object could solve many problems, for example the iPhone covers social
needs like interaction and many functions, like fast solutions on internet and many apps
to connect you with other people around the world. Inside this sophisticated model e can
find many engineer applications like the iPhone battery and advance engineering
system.

3. According to the unit, technology serves practical purpose. What practical

purpose would television serve?

- Television would serve to be informed and entertaining; both are necessary in our lives
even though we don't appreciate it.

4. If you wanted to conduct an experiment to determine the temperature at which

milk freezes compared to other liquids, such as water or juice, explain the
steps you would need to make it a fair test.

-For this question I had to do a little search since I am not 100% sure of the process of
freezing. The difference between milk and water are not super big factors since
conductivity, thermal are equal but some stages might be:

1) Temperature differences/ 2) We have to look at the weight of the samples/ 3)

Differences in container shapes and volumes depending on its size / 4) The freezing
point for your water samples not counting on distilled water/ 5) The heat of fusion
difference between the milk and water.

5. The author states that Digital Revolution has “opened up a whole new world for
human beings.” Explain what that quote means and give an example of an
innovation that fits this description of technology.

-The meaning behind this quote is basically that humans are humans and they don’t
have the ability to have question to every answer if we are individuals. The only way is
with every individual having different knowledge’s and putting them together to expand
your brain. Before, humans couldn’t know every answer to all these questions since
Chinese isn’t the same as Spanish and Chinese and Spanish people didn’t talk to each
other because they are all the way to the other `part of the world. The Digitalization has
opened a door to a new world of experiences which knowledge is infinite, and everyone
can talk and discover in a second millions of answers making it a new door that humans
couldn’t even reach in the 90s. And innovation would be our cellphone, if we talked to
someone in the first world war, no one would had expected that we could do that many
things in just a single second and by now it’s already acquired.
