1. INTRODUCTION
This document is covered the steel pile capacity calculation based on Geotechnical
Investigation Report have done by PT Royal Haskoning DHV for Conveyor foundation for BLC
phase 1D 1500 TPH, PT Libra Dwi Kartika at Muara Lematang Sumatera Selatan, Indonesia
This document present detail engineering calculation for steel pile capacity calculation at
BH-P1 ~ BH-P8. for diameter 400mm x 20m depth penetration
a. Steel Pile :
- Steel Pipe Pile ASTM A252 Diameter 400 mm 10 mm thicknes, Grade 2
The assestment of axial pile capacity is based on Steel pipe pile diameter 400 mm
with 10 mm thickness. The ultimate soil bearing capacity in Compression and
tension is calculated base on the laboratory and field tests, with the following
Equation (Refer to API-RP2A)
Qu = Qp + Qs
Where,
Qu = The ultimate pile capacity
Qp = The ultimate end bearing capacity
Qs = The ultimate skin friction resistence
Qs = Qsc + Qsφ
Where,
Qs = The ultimate skin friction resistence
Qsc = Contribution of soil cohesion, c
Qsφ = Contribution of internal friction angle of soil, φ
Where,
Qsc = Contribution of soil cohesion, c for ultimate skin friction resistance
α = adhesion factor
cu-i = undrained soil cohesion at layer-i
li = length of pile segment along layer-i
p = perimeter of pile
Where,
Qsφ = Contribution of internal friction angle of soil, φ for ultimate skin friction
resistance
fi = Ksi . σ'v-i . Tan(δ)
Ks = coefficient of horizontal soil stress at layer-i
σ'v-i = effective vertical stress at middle of layer-i
δ = angle of wall friction at layer-i
li = length of pile segment along layer-i
p = perimeter of pile
A value of K of 0.8 is recommended for open-ended pipe piles that are driven
unplugged, for loading in both tension and compression. A value of K of 1.0 is
recommended for full displacement piles. In the absence of data on δ, Table 5.1
was recommended as guidelines only for siliceous soil.
In general, the ultimate end bearing capacity of driven pile that penetrated into c-φ
soil could be expressed as follow:
Where,
Qp = Ultimate end bearing capacity
Ap = area of pile tip
c = cohesion of the soil supporting the pile tip
q' = effective vertical stress at the level of pile tip
Nc', Nq' = the bearing capacity factors
The API recommendation in equation form is as follows, along with a suggestion for
modifying the value of c:
Where,
Qp = Axial load capacity in end bearing
q = unit bearing resistance
c = undrained shear strength at tip of pile, usually taken as the average over
a distance of 2 diameters below the tip of the pile, and
Ap = cross-sectional area of tip of pile
For end bearing in cohesionless soils, API recommends the following equation:
The deflection behavior depends primarily on the dimensionless leng βL, where;

To determine the design or allowable axial capacity of a single pile, the ultimate
capacity should be divided by a safety factor.
Where,
Qall = allowable capacity of pile, either compression or uplift
Qult = ultimate capacity of pile
SF = safety factor, minimum of 2.0 for compressive load
Pn = Downdrag or Negative skin friction
We considered that there is no downdrag should be acessed due the existing
soil below area fill relatively consisted of medium to hard soils.
To determine the allowable axial pile capacity in tension, equation below should
be used.
Where,
Pall-tension = allowable pile capacity in tension
Pult-tension = ultimate pile capacity in tension
Fs = factor of safety, 3 for tension or uplift load
Finally, the maximum allowable load both in compression and tension should be
checked against the allowable capacity of the pile material.
