Have you ever wondered what it is like to have a career as an underwater welder? It is
an exciting and profitable career for individuals who love adventure. As an underwater welder,
you will be expected to perform under the most challenging circumstances. It also demands the
welder to be highly trained, certified and in peak physical and mental condition.

If you think you want to pursue the career, keep in mind that you have to possess
certified welding skills. Besides, you must also have a commercial diving license before you are
qualified as an underwater welder. You will need a large sum of money to acquire the proper
education. Then, you have to go through the certification and training process before you can
work as an underwater welder.

What lies ahead if you become an underwater welder? On a typical day, you have to
report for duty at the dock with all of your gear. Your gear must include rubber suit and gloves,
underwater welding helmet, an oxygen regulator, among many others. From there, a boat will
take you to the work site many miles offshore. Once you are at the dive site, you will run through
your checklist and dive into the water.

Once underwater, you will descend to the proper depth, review your project, report to
top-side and make the proper repairs or welds needed. These have to be done with proper
caution to avoid risk of electric shock to the welder. After the job has been completed, you will
inform top-side that the task has been fulfilled and will then slowly ascent towards the surface.

The salary for underwater welders varies widely. Welder-divers earn around RM60,000
to more than RM300,000 a year. Salaries depend on the work availability because welder-divers
are paid by the project. Other things that affect the pay that a welder-divers makes are the depth
at which they have to work, the diving environment and the diving experience.
