Plate #2

1. A pontoon bridge is constructed of two longitudinal wood

beams, known as balks, that span between adjacent pontoons
and support the transverse floor beams which are called
chesses. Assume that uniform floor load of 8 kPa acts over the
chesses and balks. The chesses have a span of 2 m and the balks
are simply supported with a span of 3 m. Allowable bending
stress of wood is 16 MPa. If the balks have a square cross
section, compute the minimum required width. b=188.9mm

2. A floor system in a small building consists of wood planks

supported by 50 mm (nominal width) joists spaced at distance of
0.40 m., measured center to center. The span length of each joists
is 3.2m. the uniform floor load is 5.8 kPa which includes an
allowable for the weight of floor system.
a. Determine the total uniform load in kN/m carried by the joists.
W=2.32 kN/m
b. Determine the required section modulus for the joists if the
allowable bending stress is 9.30 MPa. S=319.4 x 103 mm3
c. Determine the depth of the joists. d=195.8 mm

3. A masonry terrace of 75mm concrete surface

with 25 mm cement tiles rests o f a 75 mm x
200 mm lumber spaced at 300 mm on centers
acting as simple beam with an effective span of
3.6 m. weight of woof is 7.5 kN/m3 and
masonry to be 24 kN/m3. Ew=13800 MPa. The
allowable stresses are 4 MPa for bending, 0.80
MPa for shear parallel to the grain and
deflection is 1/360 of span.
a. Which of the following gives the uniform load it could support if bending stress controls?
W=3.49 kN/m
b. Which of the following gives the uniform load it could support if shear controls?
W=3.61 kN/m
c. Which of the following gives the uniform load it could support if deflection controls?
W=2.32 kN/m

4. Timber joists of 75 mm x 300 mm are placed o a

spacing of 0.40 m. on centers and their end rest upon
steel beams of 150 mm flange width and on a 4.25 m.
on centers. Compute the maximum allowable
working load per sq.m. that the joists could carry
including the weight of joists and floor.
a. So that it will not exceed the allowable
bending stress of 12 MPa. W=14.95 kN/m3
b. So that it will not exceed the allowable
shearing stress of 0.83 MPa. W=14.65 kN/m2
c. So that it will not exceed the allowable
deflection which is 1/360 of span with Ew-
11030 MPa. W=12.93 kN/m2
