Problem Set 1
ELECTROSTATICS
I. Coulomb’s Law
1. A point charge 𝑞 = 3 × 10−6 𝐶 is placed 0.12m away from another charge 𝑞 = −1.5 × 10−6 𝐶.
Solve for the electrostatic force exerted by the charges to each other.q

2. Two charged spheres of identical charges q = 4.0 µC is separated 0.70m away from each other.
Solve the electrostatic force experienced by the charges.
3. Two balloons with charges of +3.37 µC and -8.21 µC exerted an attractive force towards each
other with of 0.0626 N. Determine the how far the charges from each other.

II. Electric Field

1. Determine the magnitude of uniform electric field if point charge 𝑞 = 2.4 × 10−11 𝐶 is placed
25cm from the source.

2. A charge 𝑞 = 6.0𝑚𝐶 is placed in a uniform electric field 𝐸 = 2.9𝑁/𝐶. Solve for the electrical force
on the charge.
3. A dipole is set up 0.15m apart with a charge magnitude of 2 × 10−7C for each charge (one is +C,
the other one is -C since dipole). Solve for the magnitude of electric field at the midpoint of the
dipole.

III. Electric Flux and Gauss’s Law

1. A circular plane whose r=2.2m is placed in an electric field E=800N/C. The electric field makes an
angle of 20 wͦ ith the plane. Solve for the magnitude of the electric flux through the plane.

2. A square plane with each side s=1m is placed in an electric field E=800N/C. The electric field makes
an angle of 90 w
ͦ ith the plane. Solve for the magnitude of the electric flux through the plane.

3. Solve for the electric flux through a 3D closed surface enclosing a charge 𝑞 = 1.9 × 10−8C.
IV. Electric Potential Energy, Electric Potential, and Potential Difference
1. A test charge 𝑞 = 2.0 × 10−5C is found 0.5m from a point charge that creates a uniform electric
field 𝐸 = 6.5 × 102 𝑁/𝐶. Solve for the electric potential energy of the test charge.

2. A charge 𝑞 = 4.0 × 10−9 𝐶 in a uniform electric field 𝐸 = 8.0 × 102 𝑁/𝐶 is moved from initial
distance 𝑑𝑖 = 1𝑚 to final distance 𝑑𝑓 = 1.5𝑚. Solve for the following:

a. Electric potential energy of charge q at initial distance

b. Electric potential energy of charge q at final distance

c. Electric potential of charge q at initial distance

d. Electric potential of charge q at final distance

e. Potential difference from initial distance to final distance
