Activity 16: Reproductive System

Humans, as a species, have two reproductive systems: a male system and a female system.
The primary function of both is sexual production of offspring. Sexual reproduction in humans requires
successful fusion of two gametes, or sex cells. Human gametes, sperm and ova, and formed by means
of meiosis and so each has 23 chromosomes. When a sperm cell from the male parent unites with an
ovum from the female parent, a cell with 46 chromosomes is formed. This offspring cell has a unique
mix of DNA from both parents, providing the variation essential to the survival of the human species

Objectives:
At the end of the activity, one should be able to:

1. Identify the major components of the male and female reproductive system and describe the
functions.
2. Locate and identify the structures that make up the male and female reproductive system.
3. Describe the process of spermatogenesis and oogenesis.
4. Identify the hormones involved in male and female reproduction system.
