3 Mark Questions (30 Marks)

Q.1. In a process, 701 J of heat is absorbed by a system and 394 J of work is doneby the
system. What is the change in internal energy for the process?

Ans - We know that

=q+w

Given : q = +701 J; w = -394 J

= (701 – 394)J = +307 J

= +307 J.

Q.2. Enthalpy of combustion of carbon to CO2 is –393.5 kJ mol–1. Calculate the heat released
upon formation of 35.2 g of CO2 from carbon and dioxygen gas.

Q.3. For an isolated system, U = 0, what will be S ?

Ans - In an isolated system if a process occurs in which i.e., in which there is no

change in interactions between molecules of the substance present (like mixing of two
ideal gases in which there are no intermolecular forces), the driving force would be the
increase in disorder which would increase the entropy of the system. Hence

Q.4. Explain why pure liquids and solids can be ignored while writing the equilibrium
constant expression?

Q.5. The pH of 0.1M solution of cyanic acid (HCNO) is 2.34. Calculate the ionization
constant of the acid and its degree of ionization in the solution.

Q.6. A sample of HI(g) is placed in flask at a pressure of 0.2 atm. At equilibrium the partial
pressure of HI(g) is 0.04 atm. What is Kp for the given equilibrium ?

2HI (g) H2 (g) + I2 (g)

Q.7. Explain why alkyl groups act as electron donors when attached to a system.

3
Q.8. Describe the method, which can be used to separate two compounds with different
solubilities in a solvent S.

Ans - Fractional crystallisation is used for this purpose. A hot saturated solution of these two
compounds is allowed to cool, the less soluble compound crystallises out while the more
soluble remains in the solution. The crystals are separated from the mother liquor and the
mother liquor is again concentrated and the hot solution again allowed to cool when the
crystals of the second compound are obtained. These are again filtered and dried.

Q.9. An organic compound contains 69% carbon and 4.8% hydrogen, the remainder being
oxygen. Calculate the masses of carbon dioxide and water produced when0.20 g of this
substance is subjected to complete combustion.

Q.10. Why is nitric acid added to sodium extract before adding silver nitrate for testing
halogens?

Ans - Sodium extract is alkaline because it contains some sodium hydroxide also. If silver
nitrate is added to it, then silver hydroxide will be formed which will interfere with the
test for halogens. Due to this reason, sodium extract is acidified with nitric acid before
the addition of silver nitrate.
