Abstract
The geological and geomorphological literature presents works in which the stratigraphy,
chronology and occurrence area of the sedimentary coverings of the Barreiras Group is discussed,
even though there still remains some controversial aspects related to its stratigraphical hierarchy
and chronology. Few sedimentary registers of this group are recognized in the continental interior
and many of these are mentioned under distinct nomenclatures.
The current work starts of the principle that the São Domingos Formation, Pliocene aged,
which covers some plain-topped morphologies (“chapadas”) located on the middle course of
River Jequitinhonha – northeast of Minas Gerais –, is correlated to the inferior sequence of the
Barreiras Group. In this context, geomorphological inquiries turned to the understanding of the
landform’s evolution and dynamics during the neocenozoic have used the coverings of the
Barreiras as an element of chronological calibration of denudational events related to the
elaboration of planning surfaces.
The data presented in these works suggest that the Barreiras is composed of two distinct
sedimentary sequences, individualized by a erosive discontinuity and, in some areas, an angular
discontinuity. These sequences - formations? - would present particularitities to its chronology,
stratigraphy and depositional environment.
