Lesson 1
MELC: Appreciates the artifacts and art objects in terms of its utilization and its distinct use
of art elements and principles (A7PL-IIh-2) (Week 2)
Objectives: 1. Determine the distinct use of elements and principles of the selected
artifacts and art objects of Visayas.
2. Recognizes different aspects of utilization in the selected artifacts and art
objects of Visayas through creating own designs.

A. Panay Island Arts and Crafts
Hablon- weaving from indigenous
textiles such as jusi and piña.
Patadyong- wrap-around piece of
cloth which is characterized by its
linear and geometric designs of
different colors.
Pińa weaving- is an age-old tradition
in Aklan, the leading manufacturer of
pińa cloth in the country.
Aklan weaving- Pandan and bariw
plants are the materials used for
weaving baskets, trays and mats.
Capiz shell- is an important material
in the craft of Panay Islands. The
capiz shells are bleached and dried
before they are pressed or cut into
different shapes. These are formed
into plates, utility box, chandelier,
windows and etc.
B. Negros Island
The Negros Island was first called
Buglas, named after the type of grass
that is abundant in the island.
Negrenses weaving- their weaving
includes the production of roofing
materials, walls, hats and baskets.
They also weave fabric from abaca
and sinumay.
C. Bohol
Basket weaving is among the earliest
industries that have been established
in Bohol.
The materials used for basket making
are fibers that can be found in their
surroundings: bamboo, rattan,
wicker, nito, buri, sig-id and other
vines.
Loom weaving is also popular where
materials are from raffia and buri
leaves.
D. Basey Samar
Known for its woven products such as
mats, wall decorations and the
famous colorful sleeping mat called
“banig”.
The banig is made from tikog.
Innovations have been made from
banig into bags, decors, place mats,
furniture matting and etc..
