Introductory Message
Welcome to Mathematics 10!

The Mathematics Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the

collaborative efforts of the Schools Division of Guimaras and DepEd Regional
Office VI - Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning
Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning
facilitators (teachers, parents, and responsible adults) in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also
assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and
attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Mathematics 10 Learning Activity Sheet will help you facilitate

the teaching- learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between
you and learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Mathematics 10 Learning Activity Sheet is developed to help you

continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material
provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent
learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the
instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This
will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Illustrating the Probability of a Union of Two

Events

I. Learning Competency with Code

Illustrate the probability of a union of two events (M10SP-IIIg-1)

II. Background Information for Learners

You have already learned on the previous lesson how to illustrate

the union and intersection of events. This time you will illustrate the
probability of union of two events.
The probability of event A, denoted by P(A), is the probability that
the outcome of the experiment is contained in A.
One of the most effective method to illustrate the probability of
event is by using the Venn Diagram.

Example 1:
Three classes were surveyed on the sports event that they
want toparticipate. Their options are Arnis (A) and Basketball (B).

The Venn diagrams below illustrate the probability of the union of A and B.

Case 1 Case 2 Case 3

“with elements in common” “with no elements in common” “event A is a subset of event B”

Case 1: There are students who both like Arnis (A) and Basketball (B)
Case 2: No one likes either Arnis (A) or Basketball (B).
Case 3: All students who like Arnis (A) also like Basketball (B).

4
Example 2:
There are students who joined the field trip. Twenty percent (20%)
of them went to Trappist (T) only, 40% to Wind Farm (W) only, and 10%
to Trappist and Wind Farm. Illustrate the probability using Venn
Diagram that the students went to Trappist, Wind Farm or neither.

Solution:

Instructions: To know more about the concept, you may study the text and
illustrations on pages 333-334 of Mathematics 10 Learner’s
Module.

IV. Activity Proper

Activity 1:
Use the Venn diagram to illustrate the following situations.

1. The probability of a teenager owning a motorcycle (M) is 0.37; while the

probability of owning a bicycle (B) is 0.81; and the probability of owning
both is 0.36. Illustrate the probability that the teenager owns a
motorcycle or a bicycle.

2. Mark’s basketball shooting records indicate that for any frame, the
probability that he will score in a two-point shot (A) is 30%, a three-
point shot (B) is 45%,and neither is 25%. Illustrate the probability that
Mark will score either in a two-point shot or in a three-point shot.

5
3. In a basketball game, 80% of the fans cheered for Team A. Out of that
80% fans, 20% of them were waving banners. Illustrate the
probability that a fan ischeering (C) or waving banners (W) for team A.

Activity 2:
To summarize what you have learned in this lesson, answer
the followingquestions:

How do you illustrate the probability of two events,

 with elements in common?

 with no elements in common?

 if event A is a subset of event B?

V. Reflection
In this lesson, I learned that
