Sample problem of permutation:
1. In how many ways can a president, a treasurer, and a secretary be chosen
from among 7 candidates?
Solution:
7! 7! 7𝑥6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
P (7,3) = = = = 7 x 6 x 5 = 210 ways,
(7−3)! 4! 4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
3x2
4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1 6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
= 3𝑥2𝑥1 x 2 𝑥1 ( 4 𝑥 3 𝑥 2 𝑥 1 )
= 4 x (3 x 5)
= 4 x 15
= 60
c) The 5 persons in the Committee on Education can be composed of 4 women
and 1 man.
C (4,4) x C (6,1) = 4!
6!
4!(4−4)! x 1!(6−1)!
1
= 44 𝑥𝑥33𝑥𝑥22𝑥𝑥11 x 6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
1 ( 5𝑥4 𝑥 3 𝑥 2 𝑥 1 )
1
=1x6
=6
Therefore, the total number of ways forming a Committee of
Education when at least two women are included is:
5
Total number of ways = C (4,2) x C (6,3) + C (4,3) x C (6,2) + C (4,4) x C (6,1)
= (6 x 20) + (4 x 15) + (1 x 6)
= 120 + 60 + 6
= 186

Activity 1
A. Multiple Choice: Choose the letter that corresponds to your answer and write
it on your answer sheet.
1. There are 5 black pens, 3 blue pens, and 4 green pens in a box.
In how many ways can 2 black pens, 2 blue pens and 2 green pens
be chosen?
A. 150 B. 160 C. 170 D. 180
2.Suppose 7 students are staying in a boarding house and they are
allotted 7 beds. Among them, Liza does not want a bed next to Alma
because Alma is so talkative. In how many ways can you allot the beds
for Liza if Alma is allotted in bed number 1?
A. 200 B. 400 C. 600 D. 800
3.Zaira was on shopping spree last weekend. She bought 6 blouses, 3
shorts, and 4 pairs of sandals. How many different outfits consisting of
blouses, shorts, and sandals she created from her purchases?
A. 62 B. 72 C. 82 D. 92

5. In how many ways can 7 students be seated in a row of 7 seats if 2 of the
students insist on sitting beside each other?
A. 240 B. 1 440 C. 2 520 D. 10 080
B. Solve the following problems involving permutations and combinations
Write the solution on your answer sheet.
1. How many ways can you give one gift to each of your four friends if you
have six different gifts?
3. How many ways can an animal caretaker arrange the 5 carabaos and
the 4 cows alternately?
4. How many ways can you award the first, the second, and third placers
among eight contestants?

VI. Reflection
In this lesson, I learned that
C(5,2) = 5!
= 5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1 = 20 = 10
2!(5−2)!(2 𝑥 1)( 3 𝑥 2 𝑥 1)2
C (3,2) = 3! = 3𝑥2𝑥1= 3
2!(3−2)!(2 𝑥 1)(1)
C(4,2) = 4! = 4 𝑥 3 𝑥 2 𝑥 1 = 12 = 6
2!(4−2)!(2 𝑥 1)(2 𝑥 1)2
tted a bed in 5 ways. After allotting a bed to Liza, the remaining 5 students can be allotted beds in 5! W
C (6,1) = 6! = 6𝑥5𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1 =6
1!(6−1)!(1)(5𝑥4𝑥 3 𝑥 2 𝑥 1)
b) 1 short out of 3.

C (3,1) = 3!
1!(3−1)! 3𝑥2𝑥1
= 1(2 𝑥 1) = 3
C (4,1) = 4! = 4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1= 4
1!(4−1)!1(3𝑥2 𝑥 1)
de each other be considered as 1 to have 6 units in all. Thus, all students can be arranged in 6! ways a
