1.0 PURPOSE
This document covers the test procedure and the criteria for Hardness test for joints between
IPT ELBOW & CRV for Cirebon-2 1x1000MW Coal Fired Power Plant Project, Indonesia.
4.0 Personnel
Personnel performing hardness test shall be familiar with and have the knowledge and
previous experience of material, hardness test technique and measuring equipment.
5.0 APPARATUS
Portable Hardness Tester: SONODUR-3.
Probe : SONODUR SONO 50H.
2
7.0 TEST POINT
7.1 Number of test line on circumferential cross section depends on pipe size. For pipe size up
to and less than DN100, one test line shall be selected. For pipe size from DN100 to two
DN250, test lines shall be selected. For pipe size over DN250, four test lines shall be
selected. (Refer Table 2)
9.0 PREPARATION
The surface of test area shall be grinded and polished by using grinder and sand paper to
avoid the detrimental effect of decarburized, scale, cold work etc. The surface of test area
must be cooled to a max temperature of 60 deg.C after polishing. The surface shall be free
of any impurities (oil, dust, etc.). Surface preparation, the sand paper shall be as specified in
para 8.1.1 of ASTM A 1038.
3
10.0 TEST STANDARD
10.1 To prevent errors from misalignment, probe shall be positioned perpendicularly to the test
surface as long as possible. Probe attachment can be used to ensure a perpendicular
position of the probe, if necessary.
10.2 Each test point in a test line specified in section 7.1 shall have five (5) measurements and
then max and min reading shall be excluded from five reading and calculate the average
hardness value by using remaining three reading. Differential of max and min reading on
remaining three reading shall be within 10%. Additionally, obvious measurement errors
shall not be included. If there is an obvious error measurement the measurement shall be
repeated so that each test point has 5 valid measurements.
10.3 Measurement unit of SONODUR-3 shall be set to HV (Vickers) unit or HB(Brinell) unit.
10.4 Calibration for pre-use of SONODUR-3 shall be performed to be set for material. Once
calibration is settled, it is no need to perform before each using. Para 3.1.1 of ASTM
A1038 requirements shall be followed for calibration

12.0 Disposition
If the measured value is outside of acceptance criteria, following actions shall be performed.
1) Re-test shall be performed after grind/polish the test area.
2) If the value is still outside of acceptance criteria after re-test, further action will be
proposed and taken subject to owner approval.
4
13.0 RECORDS (Refer to Attachment)
The test record shall contain the information such as the followings. Any value in the record
shall be indicated using SI unit system.
1) Name of item examined
2) Name of project
3) Date of test
4) Test procedure No., including revision No.
5) Drawing No. & Welding No.
