A golden age is a periodwhen great tasks were accomplished.

The Golden Age of Greece = Classical Period = Age of Classicism

Classicism (Age of Reason)

Definition:

Believed that reason is the dominating characteristic of both nature and human nature, and
both are governed by fixed, unchanging laws

The "golden age" of Greece laid the foundations of western civilization.

This is also when democracy was invented and the Athenian Parthenon was built.

*The Golden Age of Greece, or the Classical Period, was one of the most important times in
Greek history

Humanism, in philosophy, emphasizes the dignity and worth of the individual.

Basic premise people are rational beings who possess the capacity for truth and goodness.

Characteristics of Classical Art

Baroque Art (Rough Pearl)

Baroque-word is believed to derive from the Portuguese word barroco, meaning "irregularly
shaped pearl."

. There was a continuation of Classicism and naturalism of the Renaissance.

. At the same time, a more colorful, ornate, painterly. and dynamic style was developing
• Motion and space were concerns for artists and architects.

• Additional concerns were with the concept of time. the dramatic use of light, and theatricality.

Art was exemplified by grandeur, drama, opulence, and lavish decorations.

Baroque buildings essentially dwarfed other structures with awe-inspiring Structure and scenes
covering ceilings and Walls

Increasingly became ways to spread faith in the Catholic Church during the Protestant
Reformation, as well as to further elevate the state.

order.

- The subject matter varies widely including landscapes, religion, resolution, and beautiful
beauty. The brushwork for romantic art became loose and less precise.
