Energy Transfer Processes

Energy, it is defined as our ability to do work. There are several kinds of energy; kinetic
energy is the force embodied in a moving object and potential energy is a stored energy. Various
forms of energy transfer also happen in different things from one place to another. One is
Radiation; there are forms of energy that can travel from the sun through space or through
materials in the form of waves. The term usually means electromagnetic radiation, which is
classified according to the rays’ frequency. Some radiation at the lowest frequencies includes
various radio and microwave radiations and high energy radiations include x-ray and gamma rays.
Second is Conduction, the process by which energy such as heat, sound and electricity is
transferred through interaction of adjacent particles in a material called conductor. A conductor is a
substance through which electricity flow with ease like copper and silver. Third is Convection, it is
the transfer of heat by currents in a heated gas or liquid or the vertical movement of heat or other
properties by massive motion within the atmosphere. Forth is Advection, it is the horizontal
transfer of heat or other atmospheric properties. And there is also called Latent Heat Exchange in
which heat is absorbed or radiated during a change of phase at a constant temperature and
pressure. It is the type of energy transfer that is present but not visible. These various forms of
energy transfer have an important role in our system. Without these transfer of energy happening
we humans won’t be able to use our materials or machines for there is no heat that is transmitted
or moving. These is also an important factor in our weather systems and climate.
