Sieve Analysis

1. Check the following sieve analysis of a sample of natural sand for use in
concrete subject to abrasion and determine if it meets Virginia Department of
Transportation requirements for Grading A Sand. Circle the sieve not passing, if

a. What is the Fineness Modulus?

FM = ∑Cumulative % Retained
100

FM = 2.9 + 11.26 + 37.36 + 67.92 + 84.29 + 94.83

100

FM = 2.9856

B. By the results obtained, determine the range where the particle would fit best.

Specific Gravity

Samples of a coarse aggregate are collected from Busuanga river and submitted for laboratory
testing to determine their specific gravity. Test were completed in accordance with ASTM C127-2 and the
following masses are found.

Property Mass (g)

Mass of moist aggregate sample as submitted 6, 296.00
Mass of oven dried aggregate 6, 214.00
Mass of aggregate submerged in water 4, 293.00
Mass of SSD 6, 227.00

Using the data, find the following:

a. Aggregate Bulk dry specific gravity

b. Aggregate SSD
c. Apparent Specific gravity
d. Absorption rate
