Invention of Compass

The first compass was invented in China during the Han Dynasty
between the 2nd Century BC and 1st Century AD but its principal
history is much longer. Compass is an instrument that has
magnetic needle that, when it is positioned horizontally, can rotate
freely around its vertical axis and because the needle aligns with
North-South direction it is used for navigation and orientation.
First compasses were made of lodestone but later a magnetized
steel needle is used as a main part of a compass. Naval
compasses of China were made in the form of a magnetic needle
that floated in a bowl of water which allowed for the needle to stay
in horizontal position, especially at the rough sea. Compass
appeared in Islam world in 13th century. Except for naval
navigation it was also used for astronomical purposes, same as in Europe. Modern compasses have basic
principle the same as those from 20 centuries ago, but are made from more modern materials and have
incorporated advanced improvements. Magnetized needle or a dial are placed inside a capsule completely
filled with a liquid. Casing is often transparent which allows for use of compass on the map. Except for
orientating and navigation, compasses are used in building orientation, mining and astronomy.

Invention of Charcoal Iron

The Charcoal iron was invented in the 15th

Century. This invention gave solution to the need of
the people to have a smooth look of clothes. The first
irons were made of metal (cast iron or iron). These
have transmitted the heat necessary for ironing, as
they have been placed in coals. At the top of the lid
there was a wooden handle that served to prevent
burning of the ironing hand.

The weight of the charcoal iron is between 5 and 10

kilograms.
Invention of Incubator

Baby incubators
in use at the
Port-Royal
Maternity
Hospital in
Paris, France,
which was
under the
direction of Dr.
Tarnier.

Incubator

Incubator includes equipment to track a range of things including a baby’s temperature and heart
rate. This monitoring allows nurse and doctors to constantly track a baby’s health status. It is designed to
provide a safe, controlled space for infants to live while their vital organs develop. There are many reasons
why a baby may need to be inside an incubator. These can include: premature birth, breathing issues,
infection, effects of gestational diabetes, jaundice, long or traumatic delivery, low birth weight and/or
recovering from surgery.

Incubators for babies had been developed by Stéphane Tarnier, a French obstetrician who had
seen them being used at a zoo. Tarnier adapted the idea he'd seen used on baby chicks for baby humans.
But they were not widely adapted in the first years of their existence. (Blakemore, 2018)

The invention of the incubator in 1880 ignited a dramatic outpouring of popular and professional
excitement over the prospect of reducing premature infant mortality. Yet the technology itself progressed
slowly and fitfully over the next 50 years.
