1. What are the challenges in project management? How can we solve it?

There are two primary challenges in project management: 1) is to achieve all of the project goals
and objectives while honoring the preconceived project constraints such as scope, time, and budget and 2)
is to optimize the allocation and integration of inputs necessary to meet the pre-defined objectives.

The following are the ways to overcome project management challenges that may arise:

1. Have defined goals;

2. Plan better through analysis;

3. Effective communication;

4. Learn skills to handle certain tasks;

5. Motivate teams to work together;

6. Correctly estimate the project budget; and

7. Manage time well.

2. In your own words, enumerate and discuss the phases of project management.

Project management is the use of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques in order to deliver
something of value to people. It is having a definite beginning and end to meet certain goals. There are
phases of project management namely, initiation stage, project planning and design stage, project execution
and construction stage, project monitoring and controlling systems, and the project closing.

Project Initiation is the first stage of turning the idea into a goal. In project planning, goals and
objectives are being identified. Here, a detailed project timeline is being determined alongside with risk
mitigation. Project execution stage is where the actual work is being done. While in project monitoring
and controlling, the manager is responsible for quantitatively tracking the effort and cost during the process.
It runs simultaneously with project execution thus these phases are not sequential in nature. Lastly, project
closing which is the final phase of the project management process. Most teams hold a reflection meeting
after the compliance of the project.

3. Enumerate and discuss the project management tools. Apply each tool in real life situation.

The following are the tools in that can be used in project management:

 Fishbone Diagrams – it is a cause-and-effect diagram that helps managers to track down the
reason for imperfections, variations, defects, or failures.
Real-life example: Delayed delivery.
 Work Breakdown Structure – can be developed by starting with the end objective and
successively subdividing it into manageable components in terms of size, duration, and
responsibility

Real-life example: Work Breakdown Structure for an engineer’s commercial project.

 Gantt Chart – horizontal bar charts depicting a snapshot of the status of all project activities at any
given time. It is named after the US engineer Henry Gantt

Real-life example: An Engineering student’s study schedule.

 Critical Path Method – normally shown as a flow diagram, whose format is linear and specifically
a time-line. It is a logical and effective method for planning and managing complex projects

Real-life example – Design Tank Project

 Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) – a model for project management designed
to analyze and represent the tasks involved in completing a given project where the time is
unknown.

Real-life example: Software Engineer’s Research Project

 Project Crashing – the name given to schedule compression techniques that are used when a
person wants to shorten the duration of a project without changing the scope. It is action-based
and result-based and is usually more expensive because it aims to finish a project faster by
spending on resources.
Real-life example: Using emergency powers to construct a road.
CASE STUDY 5
PRETTY DOVE CORPORATION: I’LL FOLLOW THE BOYS

Background of the Study

Engineer Milagros Abrea is the founder of Pretty Dove Development Corporation (PDDC) in 1990,
she accumulated many years of experience working with various companies from construction to real stat to
development which served as a good head start for her newly established company. The company bought a
51-hectare farmland in Bulacan and developed it into a residential subdivision with lot sized 300-450 sq
meters and started selling it on June 1992.
The marketing department of PDDC was able to sell the developed residential lots as quickly as they
should and Engineer Abrea felt satisfied as her company’s performance was beyond her expectations. But
then, she suddenly remembered the words of her close friend that nothing lasts forever. Engineer Abrea
suddenly thought that what her company is reaping now may not last forever as they might have already
reached their peak. Their marketing team recommended that maybe it’s time to consider designing a new
product.
After meeting, Engineer Abrea sank in deep though thinking of the relevance of new product design.
After all, when she considered developing residential lots, it was as if she had a natural feeling that
households will require them. Years of observing keenly the market gave her the sufficient insights on
demand and product specification.

Statement of the Problem

Engineer Abrea is worried that her sales growth may have reach its peak and her marketing team
recommends that it is time to consider designing new products.
Findings
1. In 1986, Engineer Abrea finished her Civil Engineering course at University of the East. On her graduation,
she had a conversation with her friend and told her that she and her friend may be successful someday but
it will not last forever as it was inevitable.
2. In 1990, Engineer Abrea found the Pretty Dove Development Corporation.
3. In 1992, the company started selling their developed residential subdivision with lot sized 300-450 sq
meters.
4. Engineer Abrea has many years of experience working with various companies which ranges from
construction to real estates to development which helped her to kickstart her company.
5. The marketing department of the company was able to sell the developed residential lots as quickly that
even Engineer Abrea herself felt overwhelm,ed.
6. The company conducted a meeting and pointed out that they may have reach their peak on sales and
suggested that maybe it is already the time to consider designing a new product.

Conclusion
Engineer Abrea’s experiences with different companies alongside with her marketing team, they
were able to sell numerous residential lots in a short amount of time. However, it has inculcated in her mind
that success is temporary and failure shall come her way once she reach the zenith of her success. The
company’s marketing manager suggested that they shall consider designing new product.

Recommendation
While it is good to innovate and try new things in the company, I believe that the company may also
see that maybe they have been selling a lot of residential lots is because it is a demand and instead of
worrying over it, they could see this as a blessing. They can use this and agree that residential lots are their
forte as they have gained the trust of people when it comes to these prototypes. They have already built their
rapport, the company already has a momentum in the industry. While it is important to be open with different
possibilities, having a positive outlook for the business is also vital.
The company may also do a market research based on the trends and needs of their target market
and be clear with their goals and visions and actually stick to it.
The PDDC may also start scouting new lands to develop next and expand the company reaching out
to other areas for them to develop.
