How do we get oil out of the ground?
• Oiland gas can get trapped in pockets
underground.
• Oiland gas can move through the porous rocks.
When they met a layer of cap rock the oil and gas
are trapped.
How do we get oil out of the ground?
•A well is drilled so that the crude oil and other
liquids travel up the bore hole.
• Whenit comes to the surface the crude oil has to
be moved closer to where it is needed.
How are oil and gas transported?
• Oiland gas are often found far away or under the
sea.
• They have to be transported to an oil refinery.
• This is often through a pipeline or in a tanker.
How is crude oil turned into finished
products?
• The first part of refining crude oil is to heat it
until it boils.
• The boiling liquid is separated into different
liquids and gases in a distillation column. These
liquids are used to make petrol, paraffin, diesel
fuel etc.
• The boiling oil turns into a
mixture of gases in the column.
• The gases flow up the column
which is hottest at the bottom
and cooler at the top.
• The gases cool down as they go
up the column until they
condense (turn back into liquid
again).
• The separated liquids and gases,
after cleaning and further
processing, are used to make
many products.
Where oil is produced?

• The Top 5 oil producing

countries in 2012 were:
 Saudi Arabia (13%)
 Russia (12%)
 United States (12%)
 China (5%)
 Canada (4%)
What fuels are made from crude oil?

• Onebarrel of crude oil,

when refined, produces:
 about 19 gallons of
finished motor gasoline
 10 gallons of diesel
 other petroleum products.
What is Diesel Fuel?
• Dieselfuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons obtained
by distillation of crude oil.
• Refined from petroleum by-products
Introduction
• Diesel power plants produce power in the range
of 2 to 50MW.
• They are used as standby sets for continuity of
supply such as hospitals, telephone exchanges,
radio station, cinema theatres and industries
(peak load).
• Theyare suitable for mobile power generation
and widely used in railways and ships.
Introduction
• They can be used as stand-by plants to hydro-
electric power plants and steam power plants for
emergency services.
• They can be used as peak load plants in
combinations with thermal or hydro-plants.

Major System in Diesel Power
Plant
• Engine System
• Starting System
• Lubrication System
• Fuel System
• Air Intake System & Turbocharger
• Cooling System
• Exhaust System
• Governing System
Engine System: Diesel Engine
• It
is an internal combustion engine that uses the
heat of compression to initiate ignition to burn
the fuel, which is injected into the combustion
chamber
• Dieselengines are manufactured in two stroke
and four stroke versions.
• Used to drive the prime mover of electric
generators

a. 2 Stroke
Starting System
• This includes air compressor and starting air
tank.
• Thefunction of this system is to start the engine
from cold by supplying compressed air.
Lubrication System
• It
includes the oil pumps, oil tanks, filters, coolers
and connecting pipes.
• The purpose of the lubrication system is to reduce
friction and wear of the engine moving parts such
as the pistons.
• Part
of the cylinder such as piston , shafts , valves
must be lubricated.
• Lubricating
oil which gets heated due to friction of
moving parts is cooled before recirculation.
Fuel System
• Itincludes the storage tank, fuel pump, fuel
transfer pump, strainers and heater.
• Pump draws diesel from storage tank to day tank
through the filter.
• Theday tank is usually placed high so that diesel
flows to engine under gravity.
• Dieselis filtered before being injected into the
engine by the fuel injection pump.
Air Intake System and Turbocharger
• Air
filter is used to remove the dust from the air
which is taken by the engine.
• Air filters may be dry type or oil bath type.
• The turbocharger is used to increase the pressure
of the air supplied.
Cooling System
• This system includes water circulating pumps,
cooling towers or spray ponds and water filtration
• Used to carry the heat from the engine
cylinder(maintain temperature level).
• Raw water is made to flow through the heat
exchanger, where it takes up the heat of jacket
water. It is then cooled in the cooling tower and
recirculates again.
Exhaust System
• This includes the silencers and connecting ducts.
• The exhaust gases coming out of the engine is
very noisy.
• Silencer (muffler) is provide to reduce the noise.
Governing System
• The function of the governing system is to
maintain the speed of the engine
• Thisis done generally by varying fuel supply to
the engine according to load.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF
DIESEL POWER PLANT
ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGES
 Simple design & layout of plant High running charges due
 Occupies less space & is compact to costly price of Diesel
 Can be started quickly and picks Generates small amount of
up load in a short time power
 Requires less water for cooling Cost of lubrication very
 Thermal efficiency better that of high
Steam Power Plant of same size Maintenance charges are
 Overall cost is cheaper than that generally high
of Steam Power Plant  of same
size
