MINI-LESSON

Hello! It’s a new week and it’s time to

learn something new. I hope you are all
fine today and ready to start your week
with a splash of fun-filled learning. Set
back and enjoy!

Have you heard of customized operating

system installer? What do you understand with the
word customized like in customized shirt or
customized design? Have you tried customizing
something?
Customized means to change a certain
aspect of a thing to fit in to the preference of a user.

An installer is a program that performs specified instructions

allowing certain device/component be manipulated to complete certain
tasks. A customized installer is an installer preset to enhance or omit
certain features preferred by users.
An operating system installer like Windows can be customized.
When a Windows OS is customized, it can save time as it performs an
installation without asking questions, integrate updates and drivers, tweak
Windows and remove Windows exponent.
1. To customized
installer, there is a
need to install an
application called
RT Se7en lite. But
before doing the
process, download
and install first
Windows
Automated
Installation Kit
(WAIK) to allow
customization of
Windows.

 2. After completing the
process, download and install
RT Se7en lite. Click the
Browse button and provide
your Windows 7 files – if you
have an ISO file on your hard
drive, click Select ISO file and
navigate to it. If you have a
Windows disc, insert the disk,
click Select OS path, and
navigate to the disc.

3. If you provide an ISO,

you’ll have to specify an
extraction path where the
ISO’s files will be extracted to
– you’ll need several gigabytes
of space on your hard disk for
this.

4. After selecting the edition of Windows 7 you’re customizing, RT

Se7en Lite will load the image. If you have a Windows 7 disc without
Service Pack 1 integrated, click the Slipstream Service Pack option in
the “Select an image to configure” window and you’ll be able to
integrate P1.
5. Click over to the Task
pane and select the tasks you
want to perform after the image
is loaded. You can manually
check the check boxes or
select a preset. Selecting one
of the check boxes will activate
the corresponding
configuration pane at the left
side of the window.

 6. The integration pane
allows you to integrate
Windows updates, drivers,
language packs, and even
third-party applications into
your installation disc. To
integrate updates, you’ll have
to download their installer files
and load them into RT Seven
Lite with the Add button.
7. On the Features
Removal or Components tab,
you can permanently remove
components from your
Windows installation disc and
control which Windows
features are installed by
default. For example, you can
remove the included games
from your Windows installer
disc, or force Windows to
install the IIS web server by
default.
8. The Tweaks tab
allows you to customize the
default settings for the
Windows Control Panel,
Desktop, Explorer, and a
variety of other Windows
components. You can even
add custom registry settings
to tweak other settings that
aren’t present in the list.

9. The Unattended section allows you to create an unattended installation

disc – you provide answers to installation questions beforehand and
Windows will install without asking you these questions during the
installation process.

 For example, you can
enter your product key ahead
of time so Windows won’t ask
you for it. The other tabs allow
you to control other settings –
for example, selecting the hard
disks that Windows will install
on. If you complete enough of
these settings, Windows will
install automatically without
asking you any questions
during the installation, allowing
you to perform an unattended
Windows installation.
10. The Customization
pane allows you to add custom
screensavers, wallpapers,
themes, documents, and even
logon screens to your
Windows 7 disc.

11. On the ISO Bootable

pane, you can create a ISO
image from your customized
installation disc. You can also
burn it to a DVD or copy it to a
bootable USB drive.

portable. This time, it will be about portable
applications. Are you all set? Then, hop in
with me and enjoy learning.

You have already learned from the previous

topic what the word portable means. Now what do
you think is the meaning of portable application?
Is it any application that can be easily carried
wherever you go? Can you cite an example of a
portable application?

A portable application is an application program that does not need

to be installed for it to run in a computer. It is a program that doesn’t have
any configuration options. It can be stored on any data storage device,
including internal mass storage, a file share, cloud storage or external
storage such as USB device and floppy disks. Portable application can
refer to 1) Individual Portable Application or 2) Portable Software
Platforms.
1. Individual Portable Applications. These are applications that run
from external media like flash drive without requiring installation.
Examples are OpenOffice and Media Player Classic
2. Portable Software Platforms. Since there are many portable
applications available, it is common to include multiple apps on one
removable drive, managed by a single portable platform. By
consolidating all your portable apps on one device, you can bring
your desktop applications wherever you go. PortableApps.com is
the most common platform. Some of these platforms are Ceedo,
winPenPack and SmartKey.

The main benefit of portable software is that you can run

applications on any compatible machine. However, it also provides a
security benefit since all your settings are stored on the removable
storage device. This provides a means of "sandboxing," which prevents
unwanted files or malware from being written to your device.

 The following are some of portable applications that can be
downloaded for free.
1. Google Chrome Portable (Web Browser)

If you use Chrome already, the portable version is identical -- it links

to your Google account, offers bookmarks, and supports extensions. Plus,
Chrome offers built-in malware protection and auto-updates, so it’s a
secure choice for browsing the web, checking emails, or anything else you
might need to do.
2. Mozilla Firefox Portable (Web Browser)

Mozilla Firefox Portable is identical in function to its non-portable

alternative. The portable app employs pop-up blocking and automatic
updates, so it’s secure. Plus, Firefox Portable ensures your bookmarks
and extensions are saved, so wherever you take your portable app, you
take those with you.
3. LMMS (Linux Multimedia Studio) Portable (Media Player)
Music creation and production software takes up a lot of hard drive space
-LMMS is the portable alternative, allowing you to create melodies and beats,
mix sounds, and edit and add effects to your samples. It also offers instrument
and effect plugins. LMMS is open source and compatible with many standards,
including SoundFont2, VST(i), LADSPA, GUS Patches, and MIDI.
4. Apache OpenOffice Portable (Office Suite)

Apache OpenOffice app, which is also available for Windows, is one

of the most impressive alternatives to the Office suite, offering a word
processor, spreadsheet, presentation tool, and more. It supports many
different languages including Chinese, French, German, Italian,
Portuguese, and Spanish. Best of all, it’s free, so you save money by
using it instead of the Office alternative.

5. Stickies Portable (Stickie Notes)

The Portable version supplies sticky notes that can store text and
images, and you can attach a sticky note to a website or document so you
can minimize them until you need it.

 6. VLC Media Player Portable (Media Player)

VLC is one of the most popular media players around, largely due
to its ability to play almost any audio or video format, including WMV,
MPEG-1, DivX, ogg, as well as DVDs. Since it can handle files from
almost any location, including local drives, network storage, and
streams, it’s a good idea to download the portable app for any time
you’re having trouble displaying an audio or video file on your
computer. This app is also available for Windows.

7. XMind (Mindmapping Tool)

XMind offers a variety of helpful productivity and decision-making
tools for mindmapping and diagramming, including organizational
charts, tree charts, and logic charts. Along with brainstorming
templates, XMind also lets you create business charts and
presentations. It has an intuitive interface and provides easy-to-use
templates.
8. Gimp (Photo Editor)
One of the most comparable alternatives to Photoshop, Gimp
provides an impressive array of photo-editing tools. Since editing and
exporting images takes up a lot of storage space, you might opt for
Gimp’s portable app version to edit your photos -- plus, it’s free. You
can use it to create new designs using the paint program, or simply
convert image formats. It’s also available for Windows.
9. Inkscape (Vectors Graphic Editor)
Inkscape is essentially identical in function to Adobe Illustrator, and
is an impressive free alternative. Inkscape portable offers advanced
features including alpha blending, markers, and trace bitmaps, and has
an intuitive interface. If you’re a freelance designer, it’s not a bad idea
to carry Inkscape portable around on a USB, so you’ve got the tools for
for vector graphics, creating illustrations, charts, and logos at your
disposal at all times.

10. LibreOffice Portable (Office Suite)

LibreOffice, a notable Office alternative, offers many of the same

features as Office including a word processor, spreadsheets,
presentations, vector drawing, and databases. It performs most of the
necessary functions you’d require from Office, but it’s free and you can
carry it around with you on an external drive or via the cloud. It supports

over ten languages.

 11. CCleaner Portable (Software Cleaner)

It seems contradictory to download a large software file just to clear

up space on your computer, so it makes sense you’d use CCleaner’s
portable version to clean up your files and ensure your computer’s
protected from viruses. Along with clearing up space, CCleaner cleans
out cookies and files that could put your privacy at risk.
12. Foobar2000 (Audio Player)

Foobar2000 is a media player that supports most popular audio

formats, and lets you rip audio CDs, create playlists, and play natively
from within the app. It also touts an easily customizable user interface
with advanced tagging capabilities and customizable keyboard
shortcuts, allowing you to customize your user experience more than
you could with iTunes or Spotify.

13. GeekUninstaller (Software Cleaner)

If you uninstall something using Windows' add/remove button, it

isn’t completely eliminated from your computer -- there are still junk
files or folders left behind. GeekUninstaller permanently rids your
computer of unwanted files, including any unintentional residue left
over. The app also offers a “Force removal” button for difficult-to-
remove programs. Plus, since it’s portable, it doesn't contribute to
clutter.
