What is an Operating System?

An operating system the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks,
executing applications, and controlling peripherals. The operating system can be considered as core software
component of the computer. It performs many functions and an interface between your computer hardware
using what is referred to as "drivers", and the programs installed in your computer.

After assembling your computer, you cannot use it immediately. When you boot your computer, the first thing
that executes in your hardware is the one installed in the CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor)
which is the BIOS (Basic Input Output System). The BIOS job is to:

1. Check the custom CMOS Setup

2. Load interrupt handlers and device managers
3. Initialize registers and power management
4. Perform the power-on self-test (POST)
5. Display system settings
6. Determine which devices are bootable
7. Initiate the bootstrap sequence

Without the operating system, the computer could not open any games or office programs like Microsoft
Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. The user cannot do anything useful with the computer without the operating
system. Look at the diagram below.

Windows Operating System

Microsoft Windows, also called Windows and Windows OS, computer operating system (OS) developed by
Microsoft Corporation to run personal computers (PCs). Featuring the first graphical user interface (GUI) for
IBMcompatible PCs, the Windows OS soon dominated the PC market. Approximately 90 percent of PCs run
some version of Windows.

The first version of Windows, released in 1985, was simply a GUI offered as an extension of Microsoft’s existing
disk operating system, or MS-DOS. Based in part on licensed concepts that Apple Inc. had used for its Macintosh
System Software, Windows for the first time allowed DOS users to visually navigate a virtual desktop, opening
graphical “windows” displaying the contents of electronic folders and files with the click of a mouse button,
rather than typing commands and directory paths at a text prompt.

Subsequent versions introduced greater functionality, including native Windows File Manager, Program
Manager, and Print Manager programs, and a more dynamic interface. Microsoft also developed specialized
Windows packages, including the networkable Windows for Workgroups and the high-powered Windows NT,
aimed at businesses. The 1995 consumer release Windows 95 fully integrated Windows and DOS and offered
built-in Internet support, including the World Wide Web browser Internet Explorer.

With the 2001 release of Windows XP, Microsoft united its various Windows packages under a single banner,
offering multiple editions for consumers, businesses, multimedia developers, and others. Windows XP
abandoned the long-used Windows 95 kernel (core software code) for a more powerful code base and offered a
more practical interface and improved application and memory management. The highly successful XP standard
was succeeded in late 2006 by Windows Vista, which experienced a troubled rollout and met with considerable
marketplace resistance, quickly acquiring a reputation for being a large, slow, and resource-consuming system.
Responding to Vista’s disappointing adoption rate, Microsoft in 2009 released Windows 7, an OS whose
interface was similar to that of Vista but was met with enthusiasm for its noticeable speed improvement and its
modest system requirements.

Windows 8 in 2012 offered a start screen with applications appearing as tiles on a grid and the ability to
synchronize settings so users could log on to another Windows 8 machine and use their preferred settings. In
2015 Microsoft released Windows 10, which came with Cortana, a digital personal assistant like Apple’s Siri, and
the Web browser Microsoft Edge, which replaced Internet

Explorer. Microsoft also announced that Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows, meaning that users
would receive regular updates to the OS but that no more large-scale revisions would be done.

Activity Proper

1. Installing Windows 7

After reading this section, YOU MUST have gained knowledge on how to install windows 7.

INTRODUCTION

As with any OS installation, we should initially plan the installation procedure. When you run the Windows 7
Setup program, you need to provide information about how to install and configure the OS. Planning and make
your installation of Windows 7 more productive by helping you to maintain a strategic distance from potential
issues during installation. An understanding of the setup alternatives will likewise guarantee that you have
appropriately configured your system.

Here are some of the most important things you should take into consideration when planning for your
Windows 7 installation:
• Check System Requirements
• Check Hardware and Software Compatibility
• Determine Disk Partitioning Options
• Complete a Pre-Installation Checklist

System Requirements

• 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor*

• 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
• 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
• DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

x64 vs x86 installer

You need to choose whether or not to set up the 32-bit or 64-bit variant of Windows 7. The Windows 7 set up
package incorporates both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. Fundamentally, the 64-bit version of
Windows handles a lot of memory (RAM) more adequately than a 32-bit architecture. Along these lines, on the
off chance that you are going to use Windows 7 on a PC with larger than 4 GB of RAM, it is recommended to
use the 64-bit version.

Note: Either way, you can't utilize a current 32-bit variant of a previous OS to perform a set an in-place upgrade
to a 64-bit version of Windows 7, and you'll have to format and introduce a new fresh copy. Additionally, you
can't use a current 64-bit version of a previous OS to perform an in-place upgrade to a 32-bit rendition of
Windows 7.

Type of Installation

• Upgrade (In-place upgrade) – This alternative replaces your present variant of Windows with Windows
7, and keeps your records, settings, and projects set up on your PC.
• Custom ("fresh" installation) – This choice replaces your present version of Windows with Windows 7,
yet does not keep your records, settings, and programs. It is occasionally referred to a bare metal installation
for that reason.

As usual, a new installation is much better, and it is strongly suggested using that method. Regardless of
whether you have a current Windows XP/Vista OS on your PC, I would prescribe that you format it and install a
new copy of the OS.

Installation Procedures for Windows 7

1. Enter your computer's BIOS. Turn off the computer that you want to install Windows on then turn it back
on. When the BIOS screen appears or you are prompted to do so, press ⌦ Del, ⎋ Esc, F2, F10, or F9
(depending on your computer’s motherboard) to enter the system BIOS. The key to enter the BIOS is
usually shown on the screen.

2. Enter your PC's BIOS. At the point when the BIOS screen shows up or you are incited to do as such, press
⌦ Del, ⎋ Esc, F2, F10, or F9 (depending upon your PC's motherboard) to enter the system BIOS. The way
to enter the BIOS typically appears on the screen.

3. Find your BIOS's boot choices menu. The boot options menu of your BIOS may vary on location or name
from the image, however, you may, in the end, discover it if you seek around.
•If you cannot discover the boot choices menu, look through the name of your BIOS (no doubt situated in
the BIOS menu) online for help.

4. Select the CD/DVD drive as the primary boot device of your PC. Although this strategy may differ among
PCs, the boot options menu is regularly a menu of moveable device names where you should set your CD-
ROM drive as the first boot device. It can likewise be a list of devices that you can set the request of their
boot on. Consult a manual or the web for help in case you are stuck.

5. Save the changes of the settings. Press the button demonstrated on the screen or select the save option
from the BIOS menu to save your configuration.

6. Restart your computer. Normally after clicking Save the Changes and Exit Computer will automatically
restart.

C. Assessment/Application/Outputs (Please refer to DepEd Order No. 31, s. 2020)

Reflection (Provide reflection guide question)

As computer hardware technology gets more sophisticated, so is the program that must be installed in the system. And
this is all because of the demand of the users for better application software experience. The Windows 7 is known to be
easy to use and works as how the user intends to use it. Some of the cybercafés still use Windows 7 as it is easy to
troubleshoot and still meets the minimum specification of the current games. However, in January 14, 2020, the user
must upgrade to Windows 10 because Microsoft will be discontinuing all technical support, software updates, security
updates, and any other fixes after that date. Most of the windows users have opted to upgrade due to the latest OS, and
some they might need help from those who are knowledgeable in computer software manipulation.
