SPEAKING TEST 1
Part 1 - Future
Q. What job would you like to have ten years from now? [Why?]
Q. How do you think your life will change in the future? [Why/Why not?]
Answer: It is rather uncertain how my life will change in the future, but one thing is
for sure that I will become very busy with my career because I want to have a secured
financial future for myself and my family. I also want to move to a quieter place in the
future, probably after 20 years or so, in order to enjoy a quiet life, away from the
hustling and bustling of busy city life.

Part 2 – Book
Describe a book you find useful.
You should say:
- What its name is
- What its author is
- What it’s about
- Why you think it is useful
When I read the cue card, the first thing springing to mind was ‘Boundaries and
Categories’ - a novel written in English by the Chinese author Wang Feng. He is one
of the most prominent novelists in Asia in general and China in particular.
With regard to ‘Boundaries and Categories’, I love its unique approaches to personify
aspects of life. When the novel was published, it instantly came into the spotlight,
which really filled me with curiosity. So a few days later, I went to Nhã Nam Book
Store to buy it. And the novel really lived up to my expectation. We enjoyed every
page of it and couldn’t put it down.
The main themes of the novel are class conflict and social inequality. What impressed
me the most was the image of staircases. They are repeatedly used to represent the
high and low social status of the different characters. The novel offers many different
perspectives such as the attitude of the rich towards the poor and vice versa. And
whether we are rich or poor, we all have to struggle with our own concerns in life.
I remember that at college, we studied a subject called Cultures and Civilizations.
There was this one time, we were given an assignment in which we had to write about
social discrimination in this modern age. And this novel became a great source for me
to collect information. It really came in handy at that time. The lecturer said she liked
my paper and gave me a 9. And that’s the way the book became my supportive
companion.

Part 3 – Children and reading + Electronic books
1. Do you think it's important that children read regularly?
Definitely. I think reading is possibly the most important skill that children should
learn. A child reading on a regular basis can be keenly aware of various issues in
society such as pollution, gender equality and the like, as well as people’s attitudes
towards those issues. He would grow up, having his critical thinking sharpened.
Besides, the ability to read opens the door to all aspects of education.
- on a regular basis (adv): thường xuyên
- keenly aware of something /əˈweər/ (adjective phrase): nhận thức rõ
2. Are there any occasions when reading at speed is a useful skill?
Actually, I don’t like the idea of reading fast. I mean it takes time for me to digest
information in a book. However, I believe that skimming skills really come in handy
in some ways. For example, in the IELTS reading test, we don’t have much time to go
through every word slowly. Reading at speed helps us find out key information as
fast as possible and finish the tasks in the given time.
- digest something /daɪˈdʒest/ (verb): hiểu rõ
- come in handy (idiom): có ích
- go through something (phrasal verb): nhìn, kiểm tra cẩn thận
3. Are there any jobs where people need to read a lot?
I believe any professionals who need to be constantly aware of current affairs such
as politicians or journalists need to do a lot of reading. Besides, researchers obviously
have to read a lot. Having said that, I think most office workers need to sit in front of a
computer screen and read email all day long.
- current affairs /ˌkʌr.ənt əˈfeəz/ (noun phrase): thời sự
4. Do you think that reading novels is more interesting than reading factual
books?
I don’t think so. Personally, I will gravitate towards novels because they can
transport me to another world where the characters become almost real. This kind of
book can really boost my creativity and imagination. But some others may not be on
the same wavelength as me as they believe factual books give them insights into a
factual subject. It’s hard to decide on which one is more fascinating than the other. It
all boils down to each person’s taste.

- gravitate towards something /ˈɡrævɪteɪt/ (verb): thiên về
- on the same wavelength /ˈweɪv.leŋθ/ (idiom): hợp, cùng quan điểm
- give somebody insights into something /ˈɪn.saɪt/ (verb phrase): khiến ai hiểu rõ
- boil down to something (phrasal verb): cái chính là, cơ bản là
5. Do you think people now read less as compared to those in the past?
No, I don’t think so. Many people think that humans read less when seeing the
decrease in the number of visitors to libraries, the increasing number of couch
potatoes and the like. But, in fact, we still read as much as we used to in former days,
I suppose. With the advent of the Internet, now we are increasingly turning to e-
books, online articles or audiobooks. I mean the way we read has changed but our
habit of reading hasn’t.
- couch potato /ˈkaʊtʃ pəˌteɪ.təʊ/ (noun): người lười hay nằm một chỗ xem TV
- with the advent of something /ˈæd.vent/ (adv): với sự ra đời, xuất hiện

SPEAKING TEST 2
Answer: There are a few social media websites, I use, which include sites like
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Linkedin. I use these websites, mainly to
remain connected with my friends, families and office colleagues as well as the issues
that are affecting our world around us on a daily basis. They also allow me to maintain
personal and professional relationship both with friends and colleagues.
Q. How much time do you spend on social media sites? [Why/Why not?]
Answer: I must admit that I am a busy person with my job and with other priorities,
and therefore, I don’t really get to spend as much time to spend on social media sites
as I would really like to. Still, I would say that I spend at least 30 to 40 minutes a day
to see what my friends and others are doing through their online posts, follow the
latest trends in life, health and fashion so that I can relax a little outside of my work
life. Once in a while, I also update my status, write or share a new post, and upload a
worth sharing picture.
Q. What kind of information about yourself have you put on social media?
[Why?]
Answer: To tell the truth, it depends on what kinds of social media I am talking about
unless they all share personal data of their users, which would not be too surprising! I
believe, on platforms like Facebook and Twitter, I have put information like my
address, job, interests, (ie. my hobbies and places I like to travel and so forth) and
major events of my life. On sites like “LinkedIn”, which is more of a professional
networking site), I've mostly put my educational and professional qualifications, skills
and expertise.
Q. Is there anything you don't like about social media? [Why?]
Answer: Well, to be honest, privacy concerns and how our personal data are being
used for the benefits of large corporations or political parties are two major concerns
about social media. And, we should not share sensitive data online, be it social media
or other places, to be on the safe side. On a positive note, social media websites are
able to bring people together from all around the world to exchange their views and

opinions on different issues, and they are useful. So we should be wise to take
advantages of it and be careful about its dark side.

Model Answer:
I have never really been much of a person who cares what a home needs, and what it
doesn’t. In fact, I leave those matters to the ladies of my home - ladies like my mother,
sisters or sisters-in-law, except on some rare occasions. Today, I would like to talk
about one such occasion when I really liked something and bought it, when I travelled
to one of the tourist cities in my country about a couple of years ago.
The thing, I bought, was a piece of beautiful artwork. By the way, I travelled to the
tourist city because I wanted to see my ailing aunt whom I hadn’t seen in a long time.
But, even though, I went to see my aunt, I just didn’t want to let the opportunity pass by
to visit some beautiful spots in that city, along with some very popular souvenir shops,
which attracted many tourists not only from the local population but also tourists from
abroad.
Anyway, after entering one such souvenir shop, my eyes got stuck on two beautiful
paintings. One of the artworks was of a herd of deer, feeding themselves in a very
relaxed mood near a mountain site. The subject of the other painting was a very
beautiful sunset, overseeing the calm, blue water of an ocean, and some beautiful
looking maple trees on the seashore. The artwork also contained the pictures of some
flying birds which were seen to be racing the waves of the ocean. Needless to say, I
liked both the artworks, but finally decided to buy the one with the beautiful sunset
because I thought that it would perfectly match the interior painting of the living room
of my home.

Anyway, I liked the artwork so much because it portrayed nature in such a beautiful
manner. I liked it especially because of its extraordinary depiction of light and colour
combination. Besides, I liked it so much also because the sunset was presented in a very
dramatic fashion as if it was trying to renew its friendship with the ocean after a bumpy
relationship between the two.

Part 3 – House
1. How easy is it to find a place to live in your country?
Well, it depends on how much money you are able to spend and where exactly you
want to live. Of course, if you have the money, it’s not something tricky to find a
place to live no matter where you are. In Vietnam, housing in rural areas is
inexpensive, but it’s not the case in the city where house prices have been
dramatically rising recently, and it is becoming difficult for young adults to buy their
first house.
- tricky (adj): khó khăn
- inexpensive (adj): không đắt
- dramatically (adv): nhanh chóng mặt

4. Do you agree that there is a right age for young adults to stop living with their
parents?
No, I don't agree that there should be a particular age for young adults to leave their
parents. It all depends on the situation of each family. Some people choose to leave
home early in order to become independent and pursue their goals whereas some
others choose to stay with their parents so as to take care of their families or to reduce
expenses on rent because housing is incredibly expensive right now. That's the reason
why I think there's no ideal age for leaving the original family.
- pursue something (verb): theo đuổi
- incredibly (adv): cực kỳ
5. What are some of the pleasures involved in making a home for ourselves?
Well, I believe that making our own home has its own merits. It means that we could
do whatever we like. For example, by buying an old house and doing it up, we can
design its layout at will and decorate it with whatever we want. The house may not be
the most beautiful in the eyes of others, but certainly the most beautiful in our eyes.
That is enough.
- merit (noun): lợi ích
- do up something (phrasal verb): tân trang (một căn nhà cũ)
6. What are some of the housing problems that exist in your city?
One of the most alarming problems with regard to housing in Hanoi is the price of it.
Housing prices in the city centre are exorbitant and almost all young adults cannot
afford to buy an apartment, let alone a house. A tidal wave of people from the
countryside have been gravitating towards the city in search of work but there is a
lack of affordable housing. Many of them end up renting substandard houses to live
in.
- alarming (adj): báo động
- exorbitant (adj): đắt cắt cổ
- gravitate towards something /ˈɡrævɪteɪt/ (verb): đổ về, hướng về
- substandard (adj): dưới mức tiêu chuẩn

SPEAKING TEST 3
Part 1 – Neighbours
1. Have you lived in your current living area for a long time?
I have been living in my current residential area for the better part of the last 4
years since I started going to university. I had to leave my parents’ house because it’s
quite far from my university.
- residential area /ˌrez.ɪˈden.ʃəl/ (noun phrase): khu dân cư
- the better part of + time (noun phrase): được dùng để nhấn mạnh khoảng thời

Well, there is a public park built in the proximity of my flat recently. It’s called
Thanh Xuan park. This park is an ideal place to get around, have some fresh air, and
do physical exercises to get lean.
- in the proximity of something /prɒkˈsɪm.ə.ti/: ngay gần
- get around (phrasal verb): đi loanh quanh
- get lean /liːn/ (verb phrase): giữ cho cơ thể ít mỡ, thon gọn

5. Where do you like to go in that area?
My all-time favourite place is Thanh Xuân park which has been established recently.
It is within walking distance of my house. We enjoy having a walk around the park
to decompress after a busy tiring day.
- within walking distance of something /ˈdɪs.təns/: gần, đi bộ là tới
- decompress /ˌdiː.kəmˈpres/ (verb): xả hơi, xả stress
6. How well do you know the people who live next door to you?
Honestly, I don’t know anything about them. We never talk to each other. Actually,
we just treat each other like strangers. So I don’t know who they are. I think it’s the
pattern there and it’s something I don’t like about city life.

Part 3 – Difficult jobs + Personal and career success
1. Which jobs would you say are most respected in your country?
Well, actually I’ve never thought of it before, but I believe that occupations in the
fields of business, education and medicine are the most highly-acclaimed ones. As for
business, it is largely because people working in this field can make a fortune and
have a high social status. Meanwhile, people working in education and medicine
spend most of their time helping others. Here in Vietnam, we have the utmost
respect for teachers, doctors, nurses and the like.
- highly-acclaimed /əˈkleɪmd/ (adj): được tán dương, ca ngợi
- largely ~ mainly (adv): phần lớn
- make a fortune /ˈfɔː.tʃuːn/ (verb phrase): kiếm rất nhiều tiền
- have the utmost respect for somebody /ˈʌt.məʊst rɪˈspekt/ (verb phrase): dành
sự tôn trọng cao nhất cho ....
- the like (noun): thứ/ người tương tự
2. Some people say it’s better to work for yourself than be employed by a
company. What’s your opinion?
Well, I think it all depends. Some people want to start their own business after
graduating from university and they actually run it well. But as for me, personally I
think being employed by a business is the first step before I can be self-employed. To
be specific, working for others, I can get familiar with the feeling of being an
employee and understand obstacles an employee may be faced with. Only then can I
know how to behave with my followers when I run my own business and become a
good boss. And when we are able to establish a good working relationship, the
business is more likely to take off.
- it all depends: nó còn tùy
- get familiar with something /fəˈmɪl.i.ər/ (verb phrase): quen với
- obstacle /ˈɒb.stə.kəl/ (noun): trở ngại khó khăn
- to be faced with something: đối mặt với …
- take off (phrasal verb): thành công
3. What changes in employment have there been in recent years in your country?
Well, in former days, a tidal wave of people from rural areas gravitated towards
big cities in search of work. But now the trend is slightly different. I mean there are
still people following this pattern but at present, an increasing number of companies
and industrial zones have sprung up on the outskirts of big cities so that more people
can land a job right in their current residential areas. Besides, young generations are
increasingly involved in setting up their own businesses. As a result, the “start-up”
community is now more vibrant than ever before.
- in former days (adv): trước đây

- spring up (phrasal verb): xuất hiện, mọc lên
- land a job (verb phrase): có được một công việc
- vibrant /ˈvaɪ.brənt/ (adj): sống động, náo nhiệt, sôi động
4. What are some of the important things a candidate should find out before
accepting a job?
I believe everyone has their own criteria to select a job. As far as I’m concerned, I
would consider the compensation package - all the payment and benefits I can
receive for doing the job like salary, allowances, annual leave, insurance, and the
like. On top of that, my area of responsibilities need to be clearly understood so that I
will not be overloaded with deadlines on the road.

6. Is it always necessary to work hard in order to achieve career success?
I’d rather work smarter than harder. Hard work is essential, but working smart
accomplishes more. Someone who makes $1 million per year doesn't work one
hundred times harder than someone making $10,000 per year. They utilise their
thinking skills to minimize unnecessary tasks and extra steps, so that they can use
their time wisely and more effectively to get things done quickly.

I was born and raised in a family on the outskirts of Hanoi. The village where I lived

4. Do you like living in the city?
To be honest, I don’t really like living in the city regardless of all the modern
facilities it can offer. I love the outdoors, trees, big yards and the like. I particularly
hate the traffic in the city. It’s a nightmare at times when I was stuck in gridlock for

Actually, I don’t think so. Public facilities are not developed in my hometown. There
are no universities, hospitals, shopping malls or companies like in the city. Also, the
area is not highly accessible by public transport. Youngsters are better off moving to
the city where they can land a decent job and enjoy modern life.

Part 2 – Describe your favourite website
You should say:
- what type of website it is
When I read the cue card, the first website coming to mind was Youtube, which is
ranked as the second-most popular site in the world.
Youtube is a video-sharing website which allows users from every corner of the
globe to access a mammoth visual database. Users can upload their own videos on
this platform and present them to the rest of the world. Also, users are permitted to
view, rate, share, report, comment on videos and subscribe to other users. Especially,
the vast majority of its videos are free to view.
For me, Youtube comes in handy since it brings a number of clear benefits. First of
all, this platform provides users with countless programs ranging from music videos,
documentary films, video blogging to educational videos, so I can broaden my
horizons about any fields I have a passion for. For example, when I decided to learn
Korean by myself, I searched many videos taught by eminent and native teachers on
Youtube, and they’re free to all. Besides, I watch funny videos and TV shows on a
daily basis so that I can wind down after a stressful day.
All in all, Youtube has become an indispensable part of my daily life, and I can’t
imagine living without visiting this website.

Part 3 – Online shopping + Online retail businesses
1. How has the Internet changed the way we work?
Nowadays, people can work regardless of time zone and geographical boundaries
thanks to the Internet. To be more specific, they don’t have to go to the office or be
physically present to collaborate with colleagues, but they can still get work done.
That’s why coffee shops are now a great place for people to come to work. Besides,
while meetings were held in physical rooms in the past, now web conferencing tools
facilitate remote meetings. I mean people can collaborate with each other without
meeting face to face as they used to, which saves a great deal of time and costs.

4. What impacts does the internet have on schools?
I think the Internet has contributed to several huge impacts on education. Firstly,
thanks to the development of the Internet, schools are now equipped with many
state-of-the-art technologies such as interactive whiteboards which help students
learn more effectively. Moreover, the Internet helps Internet-based education
become increasingly popular in schools and universities.
5. What can people do with the Internet in the future? And how?
I think that the internet would dominate many aspects in the future. For example,
Japan is planning to create cranes and diggers monitored via the Internet to reduce
demand for blue-collar workforce, which means the Internet will appear in
construction sites to replace humans. Another example is a driverless car with an
on-board computer connected with the Internet, so we may no longer worry about
traffic accidents anymore.
- blue-collar workforce /ˌbluːˈkɒl.ər/ (noun phr.): công nhân lao động chân tay
- construction site /kənˈstrʌk.ʃən/ (noun): công trường
- driverless car /ˈdraɪ.və.ləs/ (noun): xe ô tô tự lái
