FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Could you tell me something about your family?

Yes, I come from a nuclear family which consists of my parents, one

older sibling and me. We get on well with each other and have interests
in common. For example, we all like Korean movies so we usually gather
at night and watch TV together, or reading is our cup of tea so we now
have a big bookshelf with thousands of books.

What do you like doing most with your family?

As I mentioned before, many things run in my family. We always have

meals and watch TV together after a long working day and Korean movies
are usually our common choice. Furthermore, I usually read books with my
father and soon I become a bookworm as he is. You know, the apple
doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Who are you close to in your family?

Honestly, I really get on with my father most. Firstly, because we share

some interests in common such as reading books or watching TV and we
all enjoy other’s company. Secondly, he also has a good sense of
humor and always has positive attitude about life which helps me a lot
when I am in trouble.

Would you prefer to live in a small or large family?

Actually I prefer my family remains unchanged. Although I also want to live

in a large family with many relatives in which people can support others,
I’m a bit worried about generation gaps which normally lead to
unnecessary conflicts and arguments. And of course it is harder to find
privacy due to too many people. Thus, I want to live in a nuclear family as
I am doing now.

DICTIONARIES
How often do you use dictionaries?
Majoring in English in university, dictionaries become necessary reference
books of my study. I almost use it every day of my life. There are also
different kinds of dictionaries that I need, such as Chinese-English
dictionary, English-Chinese dictionary and medical dictionary.
Which kind of dictionaries do you most often use, paper dictionaries
or digital dictionaries?
With digital dictionaries for my study. With digital dictionaries, there is no
need to carry paper dictionaries everywhere in case of using it. Meanwhile,
looking up words in a digital dictionary is more efficient than that in a
paper dictionary. When it comes to exams, the paper dictionaries are the
only type allowed to use.
Do you think dictionaries are useful / important?
Yes, I think it is very important for language learning. Dictionaries not only
help you know the words' meaning, but also give you some sentences to
show you how to use the word to let you understand better about it. The
digital dictionaries nowadays even can translate sentences for users.
Do you think paper dictionaries will one day being replaced by digital
ones?
Yes, I think this situation will happen in the future. One digital dictionary
might cover dozens of paper dictionaries, saving the time of looking up
certain paper dictionaries and the space of reserving them. Meanwhile, the
digital dictionary can be installed on users' phones. People can use
dictionaries at any time they want to.

HANDWRITING

Do you prefer handwriting to typing?

Actually, I prefer handwriting on most cases, but the requirement of typing
gradually increased because of the electric version of work or homework
being needed by teachers or supervisors. The feeling of handwriting is
totally different from that of typing. The scent of paper and ink always
makes me feel fresh.
Do you think handwriting is important nowadays?
I believe handwriting will transfer the warmth of people's inner heart to
others, while typing might let people feel more distant. Also, the training of
handwriting should not be ignored.
Do you think computers would one day replace handwriting?
No, I think handwriting is not replaceable in terms of its function of
expressing people's hearts through words. Computers might be more
useful and efficient in finishing work, but the sincere care and true feeling
of one person can only be seen through handwriting.
How does a person's handwriting impress on others?
When a person's handwriting is very good, it always leaves a good
impression on others about the earnestness and preciseness of the
writer's personality. When people are impressed by the good handwriting of
somebody, it is hard to judge him in a negative way. Therefore, a good
handwriting might contribute to your expansion of social circle.

SLEEP

When do you usually go to bed?

I usually stay up very late, not going to bed until one or two o'clock. I know
staying up late is harmful to the body, I have gotten used to it.

Is it necessary to sleep enough?

Of course, yes. Enough sleep is the guarantee of the concentration and
focus for your work next day. A lack of sleep not only causes your body to
be uncomfortable, but also leads to the low efficiency on your job. But it is
not necessary to stipulate the exact hours of sleep.
Is it necessary to take a nap every day?
I think it depends on people's needs. Some people are energetic during the
daytime, so a nap is not necessary for them. But some people need a nap
to refill energy for working in the afternoon and at night.
How long should people sleep for the benefit of their health?
It depends on the age of each person. The need for sleep declines as age
increases. For young children, eight hours' sleep is necessary for their
growth and study. But for the old, maybe five to six hours are enough.
Conditions of everyone are different, so the hours mentioned above is just
a reference
Do you think the old should sleep more than the young? Why?
No, I do not think so. The work the old do is usually less than the young, so
the energy their body needs might also be fewer. Sleeping provides energy
for human body, and therefore the old might sleep less than the young.

IDEAL JOB
What do you do?

For the past few months I’ve been working for The Guardian as a news
editor. In fact, this is my first job ever, I’m working really hard to contribute
to the success of this prestigious newspaper.

What are your responsibilities?

As a part-time editor, I am responsible for editing news related to

different current affairs as well as collecting information for the newspaper
edition.

Why did you choose to do that type of work (or, that job)?

I guess it’s mainly because of the job flexibility & my passion for
journalism. To be more specific, this job offers me alternatives to the
typical nine-to-five work schedule, enabling me to find a better balance
between work and life. Besides, this job gives me opportunities to pursue
my dream to become a journalist down the road.

Is there some other kind of work you would rather do?

At present I don’t think I’m able to dedicate myself to any other job rather
than this one. In fact, to me it’s the experiences and opportunities I can
gain that really matters.

Describe the company or organization you work for.

The Guardian is a National British daily newspaper which offers free

access both to current news and an archive of three million stories. In April
2011, MediaWeek reported that The Guardian was the fifth most popular
newspaper site in the world. I personally believe that the guardian is the
inspirational workplace for all people who dream of becoming a journalist.

Do you enjoy your work?

Most of the time. Contributing to the news production for a world-

class newspaper gives me a sense of satisfaction and pride.

VOLUNTEER WORK

Have you ever taken part in any volunteer work?

Yes, I was once a volunteer in a group named New Hope, whose main
work is to organize types of activities for the underprivileged children. I
then took part in a three-day workshop. During that workshop, lots of kids
from the poor areas in China came to our camp and shared their stories
with us.
Do you know any volunteers?
Yes, due to the fact that I myself is a volunteer in my community. I know
lots of people who come join us on our volunteer team and do volunteer
work on their days off. They are teachers, retired army men, and business
men.
How do you define volunteer work?
I think volunteer work is something you do to help other people, without
asking for anything in return. It is an expression of one's sympathy, a
virtual that makes up the most important part of humanity. We should all try
to care for others through doing some volunteer work.

GARDEN

Does your family have a garden?

As I live in the countryside, my family possesses a large garden where my

parents grow various types of vegetables and fruits. My mother is really
into taking care of the garden because she wants to ensure to provide
enough fresh vegetables for my family.

If someone has a private garden in Vietnam, do they usually prefer to

grow flowers or vegetables?

I think it depends on different people. I guess that most of them are keen
on growing flowers. The reason behind this is flowers give off aromatic

smell when they are in bloom. By contrast, those who plant vegetables
because they want to be self-sufficient in food production.

Do many people in Vietnam have their own garden?

It just depends on the place they live. In the countryside, almost all people
have their own garden because there is much open space. However, in
the city, there are just concrete jungles, hence there’s no room for
creating a garden.

Have you ever grown anything? (in a garden, or possibly in a flower

pot)
Actually, flowers are my cup of tea, especially red roses. But I’m always
having my hands full, so I can’t find time for growing plants. Having a kind
of flower indoor is nice because it freshens the air and decorates the
house.
