SPEAKING TEST 1
Part 1 - Future

Q.  What job would you like to have ten years from now? [Why?]

Answer: Europe is changing very fast both economically and demographically, and

therefore, it is not really that easy to plan what kind of jobs I would like to have in 10
years from now. However, seeing how the demand of technology jobs is increasing in
the future, both in Europe and the rest of the world, I would like to take a job in the
technology field because it would hopefully offer a better job safety.

Q.  How useful will English be for your future? [Why?/Why not?]

Answer: Of course, it is always an advantage to know a foreign language like English,

and I really think that it will be highly useful for my future because I am planning to
move to an English speaking country for higher studies. Besides studies, English will
surely help me communicate with people from other countries in my personal and
professional life. Finally, knowing this language will help me read many books which
are written only in English.

Q.  How much travelling do you hope to do in the future? [Why?/Why not?]

Answer: I am planning to do a lot of travelling in my own country because it is a very

beautiful country, and it has pretty much everything to offer. In the future, I would be
able to do a lot of travelling to other foreign countries also because I should have more
money and free time to spend after settling down with life and career.

Q.  How do you think your life will change in the future? [Why/Why not?]

Answer: It is rather uncertain how my life will change in the future, but one thing is
for sure that I will become very busy with my career because I want to have a secured
financial future for myself and my family. I also want to move to a quieter place in the
future, probably after 20 years or so, in order to enjoy a quiet life, away from the
hustling and bustling of busy city life.

Part 2 – Book
Describe a book you find useful.
You should say:
- What its name is
- What its author is
- What it’s about
- Why you think it is useful
When I read the cue card, the first thing springing to mind was ‘Boundaries and
Categories’ - a novel written in English by the Chinese author Wang Feng. He is one
of the most prominent novelists in Asia in general and China in particular.
With regard to ‘Boundaries and Categories’, I love its unique approaches to personify
aspects of life. When the novel was published, it instantly came into the spotlight,
which really filled me with curiosity. So a few days later, I went to Nhã Nam Book
Store to buy it. And the novel really lived up to my expectation. We enjoyed every
page of it and couldn’t put it down.
The main themes of the novel are class conflict and social inequality. What impressed
me the most was the image of staircases. They are repeatedly used to represent the
high and low social status of the different characters. The novel offers many different
perspectives such as the attitude of the rich towards the poor and vice versa. And
whether we are rich or poor, we all have to struggle with our own concerns in life.
I remember that at college, we studied a subject called Cultures and Civilizations.
There was this one time, we were given an assignment in which we had to write about
social discrimination in this modern age. And this novel became a great source for me
to collect information. It really came in handy at that time. The lecturer said she liked
my paper and gave me a 9. And that’s the way the book became my supportive
companion.

Part 3 – Children and reading + Electronic books
1. Do you think it's important that children read regularly?
Definitely. I think reading is possibly the most important skill that children should
learn. A child reading on a regular basis can be keenly aware of various issues in
society such as pollution, gender equality and the like, as well as people’s attitudes
towards those issues. He would grow up, having his critical thinking sharpened.
Besides, the ability to read opens the door to all aspects of education.
- on a regular basis (adv): thường xuyên
- keenly aware of something /əˈweər/ (adjective phrase): nhận thức rõ
2. Are there any occasions when reading at speed is a useful skill?
Actually, I don’t like the idea of reading fast. I mean it takes time for me to digest
information in a book. However, I believe that skimming skills really come in handy
in some ways. For example, in the IELTS reading test, we don’t have much time to go
through every word slowly. Reading at speed helps us find out key information as
fast as possible and finish the tasks in the given time.
- digest something /daɪˈdʒest/ (verb): hiểu rõ
- come in handy (idiom): có ích
- go through something (phrasal verb): nhìn, kiểm tra cẩn thận
3. Are there any jobs where people need to read a lot?
I believe any professionals who need to be constantly aware of current affairs such
as politicians or journalists need to do a lot of reading. Besides, researchers obviously
have to read a lot. Having said that, I think most office workers need to sit in front of a
computer screen and read email all day long.
- current affairs /ˌkʌr.ənt əˈfeəz/ (noun phrase): thời sự
4. Do you think that reading novels is more interesting than reading factual
books?
I don’t think so. Personally, I will gravitate towards novels because they can
transport me to another world where the characters become almost real. This kind of
book can really boost my creativity and imagination. But some others may not be on
the same wavelength as me as they believe factual books give them insights into a
factual subject. It’s hard to decide on which one is more fascinating than the other. It
all boils down to each person’s taste.

- gravitate towards something /ˈɡrævɪteɪt/ (verb): thiên về
- on the same wavelength /ˈweɪv.leŋθ/ (idiom): hợp, cùng quan điểm
- give somebody insights into something /ˈɪn.saɪt/ (verb phrase): khiến ai hiểu rõ
- boil down to something (phrasal verb): cái chính là, cơ bản là
5. Do you think people now read less as compared to those in the past?
No, I don’t think so. Many people think that humans read less when seeing the
decrease in the number of visitors to libraries, the increasing number of couch
potatoes and the like. But, in fact, we still read as much as we used to in former days,
I suppose. With the advent of the Internet, now we are increasingly turning to e-
books, online articles or audiobooks. I mean the way we read has changed but our
habit of reading hasn’t.
- couch potato /ˈkaʊtʃ pəˌteɪ.təʊ/ (noun): người lười hay nằm một chỗ xem TV
- with the advent of something /ˈæd.vent/ (adv): với sự ra đời, xuất hiện

SPEAKING TEST 2

Part 1 – Social media

Q.  Which social media websites do you use? [Why?]

Answer: There are a few social media websites, I use, which include sites like
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Linkedin. I use these websites, mainly to
remain connected with my friends, families and office colleagues as well as the issues
that are affecting our world around us on a daily basis. They also allow me to maintain
personal and professional relationship both with friends and colleagues.

Q.  How much time do you spend on social media sites? [Why/Why not?]

Answer: I must admit that I am a busy person with my job and with other priorities,
and therefore, I don’t really get to spend as much time to spend on social media sites
as I would really like to. Still, I would say that I spend at least 30 to 40 minutes a day
to see what my friends and others are doing through their online posts, follow the
latest trends in life, health and fashion so that I can relax a little outside of my work
life. Once in a while, I also update my status, write or share a new post, and upload a
worth sharing picture.

Q.  What kind of information about yourself have you put on social media?
[Why?]

Answer: To tell the truth, it depends on what kinds of social media I am talking about
unless they all share personal data of their users, which would not be too surprising! I
believe, on platforms like Facebook and Twitter, I have put information like my
address, job, interests, (ie. my hobbies and places I like to travel and so forth) and
major events of my life. On sites like “LinkedIn”, which is more of a professional
networking site), I've mostly put my educational and professional qualifications, skills
and expertise.

Q.  Is there anything you don't like about social media? [Why?]

Answer: Well, to be honest, privacy concerns and how our personal data are being
used for the benefits of large corporations or political parties are two major concerns
about social media. And, we should not share sensitive data online, be it social media
or other places, to be on the safe side.  On a positive note, social media websites are
able to bring people together from all around the world to exchange their views and

opinions on different issues, and they are useful. So we should be wise to take
advantages of it and be careful about its dark side.

Part 2 – Describe something you bought for your home

You should say:
 what you bought
 when and where you bought it
 why you chose this particular thing
 and explain why you liked it so much.

Model Answer:
I have never really been much of a person who cares what a home needs, and what it
doesn’t. In fact, I leave those matters to the ladies of my home - ladies like my mother,
sisters or sisters-in-law,  except on some rare occasions. Today, I would like to talk
about one such occasion when I really liked something and bought it, when I travelled
to one of the tourist cities in my country about a couple of years ago.

The thing, I bought, was a piece of beautiful artwork. By the way, I travelled to the
tourist city because I wanted to see my ailing aunt whom I hadn’t seen in a long time.
But, even though, I went to see my aunt, I just didn’t want to let the opportunity pass by
to visit some beautiful spots in that city, along with some very popular souvenir shops,
which attracted many tourists not only from the local population but also tourists from
abroad.

Anyway, after entering one such souvenir shop, my eyes got stuck on two beautiful
paintings. One of the artworks was of a herd of deer, feeding themselves in a very
relaxed mood near a mountain site. The subject of the other painting was a very
beautiful sunset, overseeing the calm, blue water of an ocean, and some beautiful
looking maple trees on the seashore. The artwork also contained the pictures of some
flying birds which were seen to be racing the waves of the ocean. Needless to say, I
liked both the artworks, but finally decided to buy the one with the beautiful sunset
because I thought that it would perfectly match the interior painting of the living room
of my home.

Anyway, I liked the artwork so much because it portrayed nature in such a beautiful
manner. I liked it especially because of its extraordinary depiction of light and colour
combination. Besides, I liked it so much also because the sunset was presented in a very
dramatic fashion as if it was trying to renew its friendship with the ocean after a bumpy
relationship between the two.

Part 3 – House
1. How easy is it to find a place to live in your country?
Well, it depends on how much money you are able to spend and where exactly you
want to live. Of course, if you have the money, it’s not something tricky to find a
place to live no matter where you are. In Vietnam, housing in rural areas is
inexpensive, but it’s not the case in the city where house prices have been
dramatically rising recently, and it is becoming difficult for young adults to buy their
first house.
- tricky (adj): khó khăn
- inexpensive (adj): không đắt
- dramatically (adv): nhanh chóng mặt

2. What options are available to young couples looking for accommodation in

your country?
As far as I’m concerned, living in an apartment is now the pattern among youngsters
in Vietnam. But for the most part, they just can afford to live in rented
accommodation because the price of an apartment is usually well beyond their
budget, let alone that of a house.
- beyond one’s budget: vượt quá ngân sách
- let alone (idiom): chứ chưa nói đến, huống hồ

3. Do you think it's better to rent or to buy a place to live in?

Well, I must say having our own house is so much better than renting one. What really
matters is whether we can afford it or not. On the one hand, owning a house is
important to have a stable life, I suppose. Besides, in Vietnam, the price of property
has been on the rise in recent years and shown no signs of reduction. That’s why I
believe purchasing a piece of land and constructing a house on it is a good investment.
- stable (adj): ổn định
- on the rise: đang tăng

4. Do you agree that there is a right age for young adults to stop living with their
parents?
No, I don't agree that there should be a particular age for young adults to leave their
parents. It all depends on the situation of each family. Some people choose to leave
home early in order to become independent and pursue their goals whereas some
others choose to stay with their parents so as to take care of their families or to reduce
expenses on rent because housing is incredibly expensive right now. That's the reason
why I think there's no ideal age for leaving the original family.
- pursue something (verb): theo đuổi
- incredibly (adv): cực kỳ

5. What are some of the pleasures involved in making a home for ourselves?
Well, I believe that making our own home has its own merits. It means that we could
do whatever we like. For example, by buying an old house and doing it up, we can
design its layout at will and decorate it with whatever we want. The house may not be
the most beautiful in the eyes of others, but certainly the most beautiful in our eyes.
That is enough.
- merit (noun): lợi ích
- do up something (phrasal verb): tân trang (một căn nhà cũ)

6. What are some of the housing problems that exist in your city?
One of the most alarming problems with regard to housing in Hanoi is the price of it.
Housing prices in the city centre are exorbitant and almost all young adults cannot
afford to buy an apartment, let alone a house. A tidal wave of people from the
countryside have been gravitating towards the city in search of work but there is a
lack of affordable housing. Many of them end up renting substandard houses to live
in.
- alarming (adj): báo động
- exorbitant (adj): đắt cắt cổ
- gravitate towards something /ˈɡrævɪteɪt/ (verb): đổ về, hướng về
- substandard (adj): dưới mức tiêu chuẩn

SPEAKING TEST 3
Part 1 – Neighbours
1. Have you lived in your current living area for a long time?
I have been living in my current residential area for the better part of the last 4
years since I started going to university. I had to leave my parents’ house because it’s
quite far from my university.
- residential area /ˌrez.ɪˈden.ʃəl/ (noun phrase): khu dân cư
- the better part of + time (noun phrase): được dùng để nhấn mạnh khoảng thời
gian

2. What do you like about your current living area?

My current neighbourhood is highly accessible by public transportation especially
buses, so going to school by bus is very convenient. On top of that, I love the fact
that there is a street full of amazingly scrumptious street food nearby.
- highly accessible by something /əkˈses.ə.bəl/ (adjective phrase): dễ đến
- on top of that (adv): trên hết, hơn thế nữa
- scrumptious /ˈskrʌmp.ʃəs/ (adj): ngon tuyệt

3. What would you like to change about your area?

I wish more trash bins will be placed around the area. The exterior of my apartment
block is dirty because people often litter the streets due to a lack of trash bins. I think
it’s also due to a lack of education.
- litter the streets /ˈlɪt.ər/ (verb phrase): xả rác ra đường phố
- due to (adj): bởi vì

4. What are some changes in your area recently?

Well, there is a public park built in the proximity of my flat recently. It’s called
Thanh Xuan park. This park is an ideal place to get around, have some fresh air, and
do physical exercises to get lean.
- in the proximity of something /prɒkˈsɪm.ə.ti/: ngay gần
- get around (phrasal verb): đi loanh quanh
- get lean /liːn/ (verb phrase): giữ cho cơ thể ít mỡ, thon gọn

5. Where do you like to go in that area?
My all-time favourite place is Thanh Xuân park which has been established recently.
It is within walking distance of my house. We enjoy having a walk around the park
to decompress after a busy tiring day.
- within walking distance of something /ˈdɪs.təns/: gần, đi bộ là tới
- decompress /ˌdiː.kəmˈpres/ (verb): xả hơi, xả stress

6. How well do you know the people who live next door to you?
Honestly, I don’t know anything about them. We never talk to each other. Actually,
we just treat each other like strangers. So I don’t know who they are. I think it’s the
pattern there and it’s something I don’t like about city life.
- pattern /ˈpæt.ən/ (noun): kiểu, mẫu, xu hướng

7. How often do you see them?

Well, I see my neighbours a few times a week. We usually see each other when we're
leaving for work in the morning or coming home in the evening but never talk to one
another.
- leave for work (verb phrase): rời nhà đi làm

8. What kinds of problems do people sometimes have with their neighbours?

I think the most common problem is probably noise. My neighbours have two children
and they are naughty. The noise they make is sometimes really irritating. I wish they
could be better-behaved.
- well-behaved (adj): biết điều, cư xử đúng mực → better-behaved

9. How do you think neighbours can help each other?

I believe good neighbours can be really supportive at times. When I lived with my
parents in my hometown in the countryside, my neighbours were really nice. They
watched our house when we went on holiday and took a delivery when something
arrived by post and we were not at home.
- supportive /səˈpɔː.tɪv/ (adj): nhiệt tình giúp đỡ
- take a delivery /dɪˈlɪv.ər.i/ (verb phrase): nhận hàng (vận chuyển đến)

Part 2 – Descibe a difficult task that you succeeded in doing as a part of
work/study
You should say:

 What task you did

 Why this task was very difficult
 How you worked on this task
 and explain how you felt when you had successfully

When I was still studying in college, a part of the curriculum requires you to do an

internship in order to graduate. I was lucky to be picked by a design
boutique that handled very important clients, with campaigns valued in thousands of
dollars.
During my second week there, one of the clients suddenly decided that a campaign,
which had been in the works for a month and was due to be launched in three days,
should be completely reworked. Apparently he was not satisfied with
several crucial parts of the strategy and we were tasked with reworking it all from the
ground floor.
We spent all night brainstorming how to pull off something that took a month to set up
before. It was an incredibly challenging project and we had only one chance to get it
right. I took a look at previous projects that the company had run with this
client, doubled back on the feedback the client had given throughout the project and
had a moment of clarity, I now had an idea and I pitched it to the team and was set up
to run point on the project.
After hours of hard work we now had a new project that incorporated what was
already created into a new strategy which would not only make use of all the materials
created this far, but would also keep the original timetable in place with
minor modifications.  The client was over the moon at our follow up meeting and
the ingenuity of the new plan.

Part 3 – Difficult jobs + Personal and career success
1. Which jobs would you say are most respected in your country?
Well, actually I’ve never thought of it before, but I believe that occupations in the
fields of business, education and medicine are the most highly-acclaimed ones. As for
business, it is largely because people working in this field can make a fortune and
have a high social status. Meanwhile, people working in education and medicine
spend most of their time helping others. Here in Vietnam, we have the utmost
respect for teachers, doctors, nurses and the like.
- highly-acclaimed /əˈkleɪmd/ (adj): được tán dương, ca ngợi
- largely ~ mainly (adv): phần lớn
- make a fortune /ˈfɔː.tʃuːn/ (verb phrase): kiếm rất nhiều tiền
- have the utmost respect for somebody /ˈʌt.məʊst rɪˈspekt/ (verb phrase): dành
sự tôn trọng cao nhất cho ....
- the like (noun): thứ/ người tương tự

2. Some people say it’s better to work for yourself than be employed by a
company. What’s your opinion?
Well, I think it all depends. Some people want to start their own business after
graduating from university and they actually run it well. But as for me, personally I
think being employed by a business is the first step before I can be self-employed. To
be specific, working for others, I can get familiar with the feeling of being an
employee and understand obstacles an employee may be faced with. Only then can I
know how to behave with my followers when I run my own business and become a
good boss. And when we are able to establish a good working relationship, the
business is more likely to take off.
- it all depends: nó còn tùy
- get familiar with something /fəˈmɪl.i.ər/ (verb phrase): quen với
- obstacle /ˈɒb.stə.kəl/ (noun): trở ngại khó khăn
- to be faced with something: đối mặt với …
- take off (phrasal verb): thành công

3. What changes in employment have there been in recent years in your country?
Well, in former days, a tidal wave of people from rural areas gravitated towards
big cities in search of work. But now the trend is slightly different. I mean there are
still people following this pattern but at present, an increasing number of companies
and industrial zones have sprung up on the outskirts of big cities so that more people
can land a job right in their current residential areas. Besides, young generations are
increasingly involved in setting up their own businesses. As a result, the “start-up”
community is now more vibrant than ever before.
- in former days (adv): trước đây

- a tidal wave of people /ˈtaɪ.dəl/ (noun phrase): rất nhiều người
- gravitate towards big cities in search of work /ˈɡrævɪteɪt/ (verb phrase): đổ về

- spring up (phrasal verb): xuất hiện, mọc lên
- land a job (verb phrase): có được một công việc
- vibrant /ˈvaɪ.brənt/ (adj): sống động, náo nhiệt, sôi động

4. What are some of the important things a candidate should find out before
accepting a job?
I believe everyone has their own criteria to select a job. As far as I’m concerned, I
would consider the compensation package - all the payment and benefits I can
receive for doing the job like salary, allowances, annual leave, insurance, and the
like. On top of that, my area of responsibilities need to be clearly understood so that I
will not be overloaded with deadlines on the road.
- criteria (số nhiều của criterion) /kraɪˈtɪə.ri.ə/ (noun): tiêu chí
- as far as I’m concerned /kənˈsɜːnd/: theo như tôi biết, theo tôi nghĩ
- compensation package /ˌkɒm.penˈseɪ.ʃən ˈpæk.ɪdʒ/ (noun phrase): chế độ đãi
ngộ
- allowance /əˈlaʊ.əns/ (noun): phụ cấp
- annual leave /ˈæn.ju.əl liːv/ (noun phrase): nghỉ phép hàng năm
- overloaded with something /ˌəʊ.vəˈləʊ.dɪd/: quá tải
- on the road (adv): trong tương lai

5. Why do you think some people choose to do difficult jobs?

I can think of a couple of reasons at the moment. First, many people choose difficult
and dangerous jobs such as firefighters or police officers for humanitarian purposes:
they feel it’s their duty to contribute to society. Meanwhile, many others are
adrenaline junkies - their brains are wired for thrilling experiences and they tend to
be very confident around risk-taking and work well under pressure. Finally, it all
boils down to money. For the most part, the tougher the job is, the more money you
can earn.
- for humanitarian purposes /hjuːˌmæn.ɪˈteə.ri.ən/ /ˈpɜː.pəs/: vì mục đích nhân
đạo
- adrenaline junkies /əˈdren·əl·ən/ /ˈdʒʌŋ.ki/ (noun phrase): những kẻ nghiện
adrenaline (thích cảm giác hồi hộp, ly kỳ mà những thứ mạo hiểm mang lại)
- wired for something /waɪəd/: được lập trình

6. Is it always necessary to work hard in order to achieve career success?
I’d rather work smarter than harder. Hard work is essential, but working smart
accomplishes more. Someone who makes $1 million per year doesn't work one
hundred times harder than someone making $10,000 per year. They utilise their
thinking skills to minimize unnecessary tasks and extra steps, so that they can use
their time wisely and more effectively to get things done quickly.
- accomplish something /əˈkʌm.plɪʃ/ (verb): hoàn thành, đạt được
- utilise something /ˈjuː.təl.aɪz/ (verb): tận dụng

7. Do you think that successful people are always happy people?

Well, it’s an interesting question. I would say it all depends on how we define success.
Being successful is simply being able to make a fortune. I think most people think of
success that way and in that case the answer would be no as money can’t buy
happiness. In fact, the marriages of many affluent people end in divorce as they can’t
balance between work and life. However, if we expand that definition to other types
of success like being able to get up early in the morning, having a girlfriend or having
a family reunion, we will probably find that success can bring happiness.
- make a fortune /ˈfɔː.tʃuːn/ (verb phrase): kiếm nhiều tiền
- affluent people /ˈæf.lu.ənt/ (noun phrase): người giàu
- balance between work and life /ˈbæl.əns/ (verb phrase): cân bằng giữa công
việc và cuộc sống

SPEAKING TEST 4
Part 1 – Hometown
1. Where are you from?
I was born and raised in a family on the outskirts of Hanoi. The village where I lived
has a very tranquil atmosphere. Although I’ve been living in the city centre for my
study for the better part of the last 4 years, I always get back to my village to escape
from the hectic pace of city life on weekends.
- on the outskirts (of something) /ˈaʊtskɜːts/: ở vùng ngoại ô …
- tranquil /ˈtræŋkwɪl/ (adj): yên bình, tĩnh lặng
- the better part of something: phần lớn, hầu hết
- escape from the hectic pace of city life /ɪˈskeɪp/ /ˈhektɪk peɪs/: thoát khỏi nhịp
sống xô bồ ở thành phố

2. What do you like about your hometown?

I really like the hospitality of the people in my village where we are living close
together and willing to give others a hand when needed. It’s what I can hardly find
in my current residential area where neighbours see each other as strangers.
- hospitality /ˌhɒspɪˈtæləti/ (noun): sự thân thiện, hiếu khách
- give somebody a hand (verb phrase): giúp đỡ ai đó
- can hardly + verb: khó có thể làm gì
- residential area /ˌrezɪˈdenʃl/ (noun phrase): khu vực sinh sống

3. What is it like where you live?

I’m living in the centre of Hanoi where there are tons of town-house complexes and
high-rises. These housing units are built to accommodate a tidal wave of people
gravitating towards the city in search of work.
- tons of something ~ a lot of something: rất nhiều
- town-house complex /ˈkɒmpleks/ (noun phrase): khu nhà phố
- high-rise /ˈhaɪ raɪz/ (noun): tòa nhà cao tầng
- accommodate somebody /əˈkɒmədeɪt/ (verb): làm/ cung cấp chỗ ở
- a tidal wave of something /ˈtaɪdl weɪv/: một số lượng lớn (một cách đột ngột)
- gravitate towards somebody/ something /ˈɡrævɪteɪt/: đi đến, đổ về
- in search of something /sɜːtʃ/: tìm kiếm

4. Do you like living in the city?
To be honest, I don’t really like living in the city regardless of all the modern
facilities it can offer. I love the outdoors, trees, big yards and the like. I particularly
hate the traffic in the city. It’s a nightmare at times when I was stuck in gridlock for
hours.
- regardless of somebody/ something /rɪˈɡɑːdləs/ (prep): bất kể
- the outdoors /ˌaʊtˈdɔːz/ (noun) vùng nông thôn
- the like (noun): những người/ thứ tương tự
- it’s a nightmare /ˈnaɪtmeə(r)/: thật là ác mộng
- at times ~ sometimes: thỉnh thoảng
- stuck in gridlock /ˈɡrɪdlɒk/ (collocation): bị kẹt trên đường (ùn tắc giao thông)

5. Would you prefer to live somewhere else? (Why)?

Absolutely yes, and it would be the village in my hometown. I think that in the long-
term future, I’ll stay in the city because there are more job opportunities for me here.
Maybe during my retirement, I get back to my hometown to settle down for good.
- settle down /ˈsetl/ (verb): an cư, sống bình lặng hơn
- for good (idiom): lâu dài, mãi mãi

6. Does your hometown have a lot of tourists?

No, it doesn’t. It’s just a typical village of the outdoors in Vietnam with small houses,
winding alleys, paddy fields and rivers. I mean it’s just an ordinary place and there
are no tourist attractions.
- typical /ˈtɪpɪkl/ (adj): điển hình
- winding alleys /ˈwaɪndɪŋ ˈæli/ (noun phrase): những con ngõ quanh co
- ordinary /ˈɔːdnri/ (adj): bình thường, không có gì đặc biệt

7. Do you think your hometown is a good place for young people? (Why)?
Actually, I don’t think so. Public facilities are not developed in my hometown. There
are no universities, hospitals, shopping malls or companies like in the city. Also, the
area is not highly accessible by public transport. Youngsters are better off moving to
the city where they can land a decent job and enjoy modern life.
- highly accessible /əkˈses.ə.bəl/ (adjective phrase): dễ dàng đến được
- better off doing something (adjective phrase): tốt hơn nên làm gì
- land a decent job /ˈdiː.sənt/ (verb phrase): kiếm được một công việc đàng
hoàng

Part 2 – Describe your favourite website
You should say:
- what type of website it is

- what it allows you to do

- And why you find it useful

When I read the cue card, the first website coming to mind was Youtube, which is
ranked as the second-most popular site in the world.
Youtube is a video-sharing website which allows users from every corner of the
globe to access a mammoth visual database. Users can upload their own videos on
this platform and present them to the rest of the world. Also, users are permitted to
view, rate, share, report, comment on videos and subscribe to other users. Especially,
the vast majority of its videos are free to view.
For me, Youtube comes in handy since it brings a number of clear benefits. First of
all, this platform provides users with countless programs ranging from music videos,
documentary films, video blogging to educational videos, so I can broaden my
horizons about any fields I have a passion for. For example, when I decided to learn
Korean by myself, I searched many videos taught by eminent and native teachers on
Youtube, and they’re free to all. Besides, I watch funny videos and TV shows on a
daily basis so that I can wind down after a stressful day.
All in all, Youtube has become an indispensable part of my daily life, and I can’t
imagine living without visiting this website.
- rank somebody/something as something /ræŋk/ (verb): xếp hạng ai/ cái gì

- every corner of the globe /ɡləʊb/ (noun phr.): mọi người từ khắp nơi trên thế
giới

- mammoth /ˈmæm.əθ/ (adj): khổng lồ

- upload something /ʌpˈləʊd/ (verb): đăng tải cái gì

- come in handy /ˈhæn.di/ (idiom): hữu ích

- countless /ˈkaʊnt.ləs/ (adj): vô số, nhiều

- broaden my horizons about something /həˈraɪ.zən/ ( verb phr.): mở rộng kiến

thức về lĩnh vực gì

- wind down /waɪnd/ (phrasal verb): thư giãn

Part 3 – Online shopping + Online retail businesses
1. How has the Internet changed the way we work?
Nowadays, people can work regardless of time zone and geographical boundaries
thanks to the Internet. To be more specific, they don’t have to go to the office or be
physically present to collaborate with colleagues, but they can still get work done.
That’s why coffee shops are now a great place for people to come to work. Besides,
while meetings were held in physical rooms in the past, now web conferencing tools
facilitate remote meetings. I mean people can collaborate with each other without
meeting face to face as they used to, which saves a great deal of time and costs.
- regardless of /rɪˈɡɑːd.ləs/ (prep): bất kể
- collaborate with somebody /kəˈlæb.ə.reɪt/ (verb): hợp tác với ai
- web conferencing /ˈkɒnfərənsɪŋ/ (noun): hội nghị trực tuyến
- facilitate something /fəˈsɪl.ɪ.teɪt/ (verb): tạo điều kiện cho cái gì
- face to face (adv): trực tiếp

2. Do you think the Internet is safe for children to use unsupervised?

I suppose that it’s harmful for children to use the Internet without their parents’
supervision due to several clear risks it brings to them. First of all, as children are still
young, they’re easily tempted to click on inappropriate content like violent scenes or
sexual images on the web, which has a negative impact on their development.
Secondly, children might become the victim of cyberbullying. If this lasts too long, it
would give them a sense of anxiety and depression.
- supervision /ˌsuː.pəˈvɪʒ.ən/ (noun): sự giám sát
- tempt to do something /tempt/ (verb): cám dỗ làm điều gì
- cyberbullying /ˈsaɪ.bəˌbʊl.i.ɪŋ/ (noun): nạn bắt nạt trên mạng
- a sense of anxiety and depression /æŋˈzaɪ.ə.ti/ /dɪˈpreʃ.ən/ (noun phr.): cảm
giác lo lắng và trầm cảm

3. Do you think many people waste their time online?

Yes, I think that a lot of individuals, especially young people, spend most of their time
on social media platforms such as Facebook or Instagram, which is a huge waste of
time. They often do not take advantage of the Internet to do something helpful for
their study or work. For example, some high-school students waste their time on
surfing Facebook or watching films instead of enrolling in an online course to
improve their knowledge of English grammar to prepare for their entrance exam.
- social media platform /ˈplæt.fɔːm/ (noun phr.): các nền tảng mạng xã hội
- take advantage of something /ədˈvɑːn.tɪdʒ/ (idiom): tận dụng điều gì

4. What impacts does the internet have on schools?

I think the Internet has contributed to several huge impacts on education. Firstly,
thanks to the development of the Internet, schools are now equipped with many
state-of-the-art technologies such as interactive whiteboards which help students
learn more effectively. Moreover, the Internet helps Internet-based education
become increasingly popular in schools and universities.

- equip something with something /ɪˈkwɪp/ (verb): trang bị với cái gì

- state-of-the-art /ˌsteɪt.əv.ðiːˈɑːt/ (adj): tối tân
- interactive whiteboard /ˌɪn.təˈræk.tɪv ˈwaɪt.bɔːd/ (noun phr.): bảng tương tác
- Internet-based education (noun phr.): học trực tuyến

5. What can people do with the Internet in the future? And how?

I think that the internet would dominate many aspects in the future. For example,
Japan is planning to create cranes and diggers monitored via the Internet to reduce
demand for blue-collar workforce, which means the Internet will appear in
construction sites to replace humans. Another example is a driverless car with an
on-board computer connected with the Internet, so we may no longer worry about
traffic accidents anymore.

- blue-collar workforce /ˌbluːˈkɒl.ər/ (noun phr.): công nhân lao động chân tay
- construction site /kənˈstrʌk.ʃən/ (noun): công trường
- driverless car /ˈdraɪ.və.ləs/ (noun): xe ô tô tự lái
