LEARNING EPISODE 3
Classroom Management and Classroom Routines

SPARK Your Interest

This Episode focuses on the classroom structure and routines performed by teachers in
the online class to provide a safe, friendly non-threatening and caring environment. Effective
classroom routines ensure order and discipline to help the students to stay calm and focused in
their daily tasks.

OBSERVE

Observing Classroom management and Routines

1. Observe the classroom routines of the Resource Teacher in her/his online class by
accomplishing the given checklist. Check Yes (√) if observed and (x) if not observed.

Classroom Routines Observed (√) Not Observed (x)

1. Movement into the online classroom √
2. Transition in classroom activities √
3. Working with pairs/groups √
4. Absent students √
5. Asking questions during lessons √
6. Asking for assistance √
7. Checking of assignments √
8. Others, please specify

2. Observe a class and list down the classroom rules formulated by the Resource Teacher in
the online class. Cite the importance of these rules.
 Students must attend to their online classes – to learn and discover new learning
through the help of the teacher
 Checking of attendance – to identify who are joining or attending and who are
those students that didn’t join the meeting.
 Activities and assignments should be passed – this is the basis of the teacher to
assist and evaluate her students when they learned from the topic that she had
discussed. This is also important on computing grades of the students

 Participating to the class discussion and sharing ideas – to have an interactive

learning and teaching process even if it is online class.

ANALYZE

1. Analyze the routines set by the Resource teacher in his/her online class by answering the
following questions.

 Were the routines effective in ensuring discipline and order in the class? Why? Why not?

Yes, the routines are effective in ensuring discipline and order in the class. This is
because routines allow students to quickly accomplish day-to-day tasks that are required
of both the teacher and students. Having these predictable patterns in place allows
teachers to spend more time in meaningful instruction. Routines also help to create
smoother transitions between activities and therefore allow fewer opportunities for
disruptions to occur.

 Which of those routines were systematic and consistently implemented? Explain your
answer.

Monitoring the attendance of the students (in-person and remote) is the systematic
and consistently implemented. We do know that showing up matters, and that when
students show up to learn, they are more likely to be able to stay on-track, stay engaged
and meet more major educational milestones. It is more essential than ever to measure
attendance and notice which students are facing difficulties in showing up for learning.
Our responsibility to use data for early warning, and ensure we are helping schools,
students, and families solve the barriers to learning, is paramount to ensuring long-term
recovery from this moment,

 Analyze each given rule. What circumstances led to the formulation of the rule?

Classroom rules are set to teach students a proper and safe way too act within the
classroom and thus, improving the student learning. The primary reason for setting classroom
rules is to eliminate and avoid all distractions and possible misconduct that interferes with
learning. The aim is to create a positive and conducive atmosphere for learning, to do so
classroom management is essential. Another important thing is that the student’s disruptive
behaviors will hinder another student’s learning opportunities.

 Are classroom rules really important?

Classroom rules are really important it helps teacher, maintain class routines and
student expectations for class work and behaviors. Classroom rules and procedure that
are clearly defined and posted help students understand what is appropriate and what is
not, as well as the consequences for rule violations. Rules vary from procedures as they
determine what the classroom looks like, what type of behavior is acceptable and
encouraged, and help students work towards a common goal. In other words, they set the
tone. It creates a framework that provides choices to students and help teach them to self
manage their classroom behaviors.

REFLECT

Reflect on the various routines observed.

 Which of the routines will you most likely apply in your class? Why? Why not?

 Reflect on the various classroom rules set by the Resource teacher. Will you have the
same rules? If not, what rules are you going to employ? Explain your answer.
