1.8 Further information

When working with subPUR/duoPUR, please follow the below additional safety instructions, in
order to ensure a longer life cycle of the unit and to prevent pollution of lab air.

▪ The unit must be installed in a protected atmosphere, in order to prevent damages to the quartz parts.
In case of such damages, the unit operator will be consider responsible.
▪ The use of electronic components in a fume hood or in a room with aggressive atmosphere can result
in a considerable limited life cycle of the unit, due to corrosion of the electronic components. For this
reason the SubPur/DuoPur is divided in a terminal control unit (installation outside the fume hood) and
a distillation unit (possible installation in a fume hood).
▪ Pressure balance without gas loading

5
Milestone Srl MA180-005 - SubPUR and DuoPUR T480 – User Manual

The hole of PTFE adapter above the PTFE bottle is important to avoid any pressure generation inside
the system. If the following points are matched, the unit can be operated as well without gas loading
outside a fume hood.
The PTFE and the silicone hoses are used to lead dangerous and corrosive gases into the fume hood,
in the event that the distillation unit is not directly installed into a fume hood. The length of the tube
should be kept as shortest as possible. If the distillation unit is operated under a fume hood, the short
PTFE tube is enough.

 The 4 cm short PTFE tube (A) is introduced in

the hole of the collector to compensate pressure.
 The 2 m long PTFE tube (C) is pushed onto the
PTFE tube (A).
 The connection is locked by using the short
silicon tube (B), which is pushed onto both PTFE
tubes.

Pressure balance of the system

▪ System cooling before removal

Before removing the distillate, the system must be cooled down, otherwise acid vapors and gases such a
NOx could be released.
Always wear gloves, protective clothes and glasses.
The cooling temperature must be set by the user in a way that no condensation occurs on the cooling
hoses. The condensation on the hoses is affected by the humidity of the environment.
The refrigeration lines must be checked periodically for wear and leakage. The material of the hose lines
can be affected by environmental factors, which can lead to damage. The hoses must be replaced at regular
intervals.
▪ Additional PTFE bottle (option)
An additional PTFE bottle should be used for the following reasons:
Reduced gas loading when emptying the bottle
If the distillate is removed, a new PTFE bottle should be screwed. In this way the lab air load is significantly
reduced, since the residual acid vapors remain in the system.
Easier and faster handling
The additional bottle can be immediately screwed and the following acid can be distillated without any
interruption. Once completed the distillation, the condensate outlet must be connected to a new bottle.

1.9 Repair/defective parts

All parts are examined before delivery for full operability. In case of defective parts, return them only with
Milestone’s original packing, as the fragile quartz systems can be damaged during transportation. If
necessary Milestone original packing can be requested.
During transportation, the packaging has an appropriate marking (fragile, glass of etc). Milestone is not
responsible in case the system is dropped from a height of more than 30 cm. Any damages must be
notified immediately. A warranty claim exists exclusively for the shipper (transport insurance during original
packing) as proof of an inappropriate treatment.

2.5 Sub-boiling principle

The principle of distillation is based on the sub-
boiling procedure.
The high purity of the distilled liquid is achieved by
the fact that liquids are evaporated and condensed
by heating of the surface and the fluid temperature
is below the boiling point. It does not boil all the
liquid, but the liquid evaporates without spraying
directly from the surface. This means that virtually
no metal ions are entrained by the vapor as droplets.

24
Milestone Srl MA180-005 - SubPUR and DuoPUR T480 – User Manual

Filling of distillation vessel (Function principle)

For filling, the fluid from the supply bottle (SB) is pressed into the distillation boiler.
The buffer bottle (BB) is directly connected to the pump (P).
For safety reasons, only a small pressure is established.
The supply bottle (SB) with the chemicals is placed in the change holder to prevent tipping.
The supply bottle has two connectors shown in the diagram and is always connected to the pump via
the buffer bottle (BB).
For safety reasons, the distillate collecting bottle remains connected, so that no chemicals run out, in case
of overfilling.

Loosen the two hoses from the supply bottle and

remove the supply bottle.

Fill the supply bottle with the acid to be distilled

and re-screw the PFA cover with both connectors
on the flask.
Re-introduce the flask with the cover in the unit.

plugged into B position!

26
Milestone Srl MA180-005 - SubPUR and DuoPUR T480 – User Manual

4.3 Heating program

Distillation speed and purity level are strictly dependent on the heating program.
The higher is the distillation power, the higher will be the productivity but, on the other hand, the quality
of distillate will be lower.
The quality of the distillate also depends on the quality of the starting acid.

The system must not be operated with sulfuric acid (H2SO4), perchloric acid (HClO4),
hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydrofluoric acid (HF) or other flammable solvents.

Keeping in mind all the above mentioned considerations, here are suggested distillation programs:
• HNO3: 45% power to have 50 ml/hour.
• HCl: 35% power to have 40 ml/hour.

4.4 Pre-conditioning of the boilers

Once received a new unit, please note that the boilers are not cleaned. As such it is important to initialize
and acclimatize the boilers, before collecting the purified acid.
With a new system, it is suggested to follow the below pre-conditioning procedure:
1. Add 500 ml of reagent that has to be purified
2. Perform a method of 4 hours at 40% power. If the acid boils, reduce the power to 20-30%.
3. Collect only the last few milliliters of purified reagent and analyze it. If the reagent quality is enough,
cleaning is no longer required.
4. Repeat this operation 2-3 times, until the quality achieved is good.

4.5 Distillate quality

You can obtain the heighest cleaning quality by low power and high temperature difference in the area of
the cooling finger.
You can obtain the highest cleaning quality with the distillate liquids obtained by sub-boiling procedure,
since acids/water are evaporated by heating of the surfaces and condensed. This means that the liquid
doesn’t boil, but evaporates without spraying directly on the surface.
According to the acid concentration, then lower or higher concentrations are obtained, until the azeotropic
mixtures are adjusted, developing in this way constant concentrations during the distillation.

HCl HNO3

Concentration 20 % 69,2 %

Boiling point 110°C 122 °C

Table: azeotropic misture, boiling point

The system must not be operated with sulfuric acid (H2SO4), perchloric acid (HClO4), hydrogen
peroxide (H2O2) or other flammable solvents.

*The above mentioned “Milestone sub-boiling“ value has been compared to usual acids. For test have been used samples with
“analysis” and ultra-pure quality. The distillation power of the unit can be optimized by introducing the heating power for each
corresponding acid. To obtain 1 liter ultra-pure acid, 1,5 to 6 hours are required at a power of 300-1000 watt.

4.6 Cleaning procedure

When you have to change the acid type to purify, please clean the boiler by following the below procedure:
1. Remove the reagent inside the boiler through a pump
2. Introduce DI water inside the boiler
3. Remove DI water from the boiler through a pump
4. Add one more time water inside the boiler and start a heating program of 1 hour at 40% power.
Once the distillation ends, waste the collected water and remove the DI water remained inside the
boiler through a pump
5. Add the new reagent to distil to the boiler
6. Remove acid from the boiler through a pump
7. Add new acid to the boiler and start the distillation to produce purified acid.

Waste the first 25 ml of purified acid, then start to collect the cleaned acid.

4.7 Draining and Cleaning

4.7.1 Manual

Introduce a resistant tube in the desired PTFE stopper

with connector and connect the tube to a vacuum
pump.
Then introduce the PTFE stopper in the filling opening.
Flush the sub-boiling unit several times with e.g.
distilled H2O, in order to clean it.

If there are liquids in the exhaust tube, the tube end can be placed in a collection vessel below
the unit level (without pump).

If any resistant pump isn’t introduced, a Woulf bottle should be installed between the pump and
the system.

4.7.2 Automatic with pump station (Optional)

Draining (cleaning) of the distillation vessel (Function principle)

To empty the distillation boiler, the vacuum side (V) of the pump is directly connected to the buffer bottle
(BB).
By starting the pump (touch the button fill/clean) the residual liquid is pumped out from the distillation
boiler into an empty supply bottle. Therefore, the lid and all connections must be tightly closed.
Another rinse with a new (fresh) template and repeated aspiration is advised only in the event of very
strong contamination.
For filling and emptying the respective procedure is repeated.

Introduce the PTFE tube in the PTFE stopper and

lock the connection using the short silicon tube.

Empty the supply bottle and restore the connections

with the buffer bottle and the quartz boiler.

Insert the hose from the supply bottle into to the

terminal V of the pump unit.

Press the button >Fill Clean< until the distillation

vessel is completely emptied.

In case of duoPUR, the system is equipped with a

unique pump with two separate tubing lines, red
and yellow.
This means that the acids cannot be removed from
the two boilers at the same time but one at a time.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Before the distillation operation, the PTFE hoses must be
plugged into B position!
