For many people today, a career for life is no longer an option. Most people will hold jobs with a
variety of employers and move across different employment sectors through their working life.
We therefore all need to be flexible in our working patterns and be prepared to change jobs and/or
sectors if we believe there are better opportunities elsewhere. For this, we need to understand that
we all have a set of transferable skills or employability skills. These are skills that are not specific
to one particular career path but are useful across all employment sectors.

Along with having a specialized knowledge of our field, it's important to have professional skills
that can help how we're portrayed and how we get along with others in the workplace. Professional
skills are often needed for all positions, so while they may not be included in a job description,
having them can help set one apart.

Importance of skills in professional life

Technical skills are not enough for a career. A workplace combines soft and hard skills. For
example, chemical engineers interact with individuals in a range of disciplines such as operators,
managers, scientists, customers, and educators. In certain stages of a chemical engineer’s career,
one will need to lead team meetings, mentor junior associates, negotiate with vendors, participate
in brainstorming sessions, summarize experiments or trials in reports, and communicate reports.

Soft skills can be imagination, curiosity, determination, passion, persistence, communication

skills, critical and structured thinking, problem solving, creativity, teamwork capability,
negotiating skills, self-management, time management, and common knowledge, among others.

Management skills and their importance

Understanding and displaying good management skills will help to position one for a successful
career no matter what level he/she is starting at.

Management skills are something that we hear a lot about in the abstract; yet we may find we're at
a loss to define what the term really means. In the broadest sense, management skills can be nearly
anything that enables us to manage others effectively. While some skills will vary based on our
industry, there are several that are universal across nearly every work environment.
