Paraphrase
Saint Arnagirinathar sang this song in the precincts of 'Poyya-Ganapati' shrine at Vayaloor
Murugan temple. Lord Murugan had ordained Arunagiri to sing songs in His praise at
Thiruvannmalai and gave him the words 'Muthaitharu' to begin the song with. After this song,

Arunagirinathar sat in meditation, and Murugan appeared before him in a vision, directing
him to Vayaloor. At Vayaloor, Murugan further decreed that Arunagirinathar should sing, for
the deliverance of mankind, about His his Vahana, the peacock; the garland; 'Vel'– the spear;
His flagstaff bearing the emblem of a rooster; His protective feet; His strong and muscular
shoulders; and Vayaloor.

bird (peacock), wearing bejewelled stirrup and a golden saddle, ேபரழகான ம களா

patturuva vittaruLkai vadivElum) : the spear (of knowledge) that pierced through and
destroyed the Krauncha mountain (of ignorance)

க ம கவ ட (dhikkadhu madhikkavaru kukkudamum) : the cock-baring

flagstaff that is majestically fluttering in all the eight directions. Mythologically, Surapadma
was a demon who tried to fight Murugan. When he took the form of a tree, Murugan split him
into two. One of the two parts was transformed by Murugan into the peacock that eventually
became his vahana or vehicle, while the other half was transformed into the cock that
Murugan holds aloft as a banner or emblem.

ர ைசத ற (rakshaitharu chitradiyum): the tiny feet that protects the entire living
things in the universe,

யப ேதா (mutriyapa niruthOLum): twelve strong shoulders

Oh Vinayaka, I shall never forget your beneficent command that I should sing about your
mount – the peacock, the kadappa garland, your resplendent spear, rooster-bearing flag,
your compassionate feet, the strong shoulders and the places you reside!
