METHOD STATEMENT
PLACING SLOPING SCREED
TO BOTTOM OF SLUDGE
TANKS

Project Manager:

Uditha Wijesena
REF: ENV/KMH/STP/MS-03

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this method statement is to describe how to expedite the 3% sloping bottom to the two sludge
tanks with Grade 15 non-structural cement concrete as shown in the architectural drawing / mechanical
instalments in directing the settling solids and particles to the centre of the pits
2. SCOPE OF WORKS
1) This scope of works is non-structural concrete screed laying to the bottoms of the sludge tanks as illustrated
in the architectural drawings

5. PROCEDURE
5.1. General
A floor screed is usually a cementitious material made from a Cement Sand or Cement Sand Aggregate mix in
defined ratios. It may be applied onto either a solid in-situ concrete floor slab or onto a precast concrete floor
unit. They may be laid as levelling screeds of sloping screeds developed for special purposes in operational
requirements. The condition here is to provide a 3% sloping screed to direct the solid particles settling through
the water to directed to the centre of the tank bottom.

5.2. Procedure
The area to be laid with the screed will be thoroughly cleaned and all laitance and grease and other foreign
matter will be cleaned off and wetted with clean water. An approved bonding agent of Barra Emulsion or
equivalent will be applied to the surface to receive the screed.

The slope boundaries have been defined in the architectural drawings as illustrated in the following sketch. Four
panels per tank are derived with the diagonals sloping towards the centre of the tank forming four valleys. The
height at the wall boundary is given as 100 mm above the base slab reaching the centre of the tank approximately
forming a slope of 3%.

It is noted that the forming of the slopes will need to take attended to in stages as there will be no access out for
the masons if all the four panels are created in one step. Therefore, two panels in each tank will be formed in
one day and the balance four panels the following day.

5.2.1 Profile control

The task of controlling the slope at the diagonal will be controlled by installing a profile board at the base of the
tank along with the diagonal line. The profile board will be turned out from 15mm plywood boards to form a
triangular profile edge fixed to a 50mm x 50mm timber as shown in the second sketch and nailed to the base
slab.

The screed concrete will be deposited between the profile boards and the surface of the slopes will be maintained across
the profile boards and finished smooth with a steel float trowelling.

On day two the timber profile boards will be removed, and the same procedure will be adopted in the other two sides of
the tank.

It is noted that four suction pipes to the sludge pumps are positioned in a diagonal along the bottom of the tank. Provisions
to a width of 400 mm will be left out without forming the slopes for the pipe installations. Once the pipes are installed this
gap of 400 mm will be formed to match the slopes encasing the pipes with the same composition of the concrete screed.

6. HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

All workers will be inducted on the importance of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during work in accordance
with the safety procedures. All staff and labour will be required to adhere to the social distancing and wear face masks as
stipulated in the Health Guideline issued to construction sites.
