System Intelligence
• With the advent of semiconductor and the information
technologies such has introduced a new generation of
products called smart or intelligent products in the
market.
• Examples: RFID, small size sensors and sensor
networks or, more generally, product embedded
information devices (PEID).
• An intelligent product/system contains sensing,
memory, data processing, reasoning and
communication capabilities like human beings to
develop intelligence and knowledge.
• Thus, intelligent systems (IS) are systems which use
Artificial Intelligence (AI) to perceive reason, learn, and
act intelligently.

Definition of Intelligent System
• Various definitions have been given by scientist and
researchers for an intelligent product or system.
• Definition by [McFarlane et al.]
• McFarlane et al. define an intelligent system as a physical and
information based representation of a product. According to
definition 1 an Intelligent System has the following
properties:
• 1. It can possess a unique identification.
• 2. It is capable of communicating effectively with its
components and environment.
• 3. It can retain or store data about itself.
• 4. It can deploy language to display its features,
requirements, etc.
• 5. It is capable of participating in or making decisions relevant
to its own destiny.
Levels of System Intelligence
• Intelligence Level 0(dumb)
• Intelligence Level 1:(Self –regulating without data
processing software)
• Intelligence Level 2: (Smart/ Intelligent)
• IntelligenceLevel3:(Advanced intelligent/Wisdom).

Advanced Intelligent/Wisdom
• Physical system of the product is with Product
Embedded Information Devices (PEID).
• The products/system of Intelligence Level 3 (i.e.
anthropoid robots) may develop “wisdom” capabilities,
since they have following capabilities:
• (i) It can identity and compute the situation.
• (ii) It can develop reasoning at various levels of decision
making, from local to distributed,
• (iii) It can communicate to each other and with their
environment and
• (iv)It can keep track of their history.
