1. Observation upon heating I2 and salt mixture: (2 pts.)

Observations Iodine is very good when it is heated. It is volatile and condenses as a
purified compound on a cooled surface, meanwhile, the salt remains in the heated
beaker

2. What is the residue? Explain your choice. (3 pts.)

Residue to this experiment, Salt becomes the residue. Salt is an ionic Solid and it
requires high temperatures to be efficient. Throughout the experiment, the salt
remained this way.

III. Post Lab Questions

1. Discuss the process of sublimation. (5 pts.)
Sublimation is where a material goes straight from being a solid to being a gas
without becoming a liquid in between. Sublimation is an endothermic process that
occurs at temperatures and pressures below the triple point of a chemical in the
phase diagram. When some of the molecules absorb heat, they get more energy than
their neighbors. As a result, they overcame the forces and fled the steam state.
2. What type of mixture can be separated by means of sublimation? (2 pts.)
Sublimation can be used to distinguish mixtures of solid substances from one
sublimate material from another non-sublimate material. Ammonium chloride,
camphor, iodine, naphthalene, anthracene, etc. are examples of sublimable
compounds.
3. The sublimation of naphthalene was performed in a purification experiment. At the
beginning of the technique, 6.9 g of impure naphthalene was obtained. After the purification
technique was completed, 4.7 g of pure naphthalene was recovered. Calculate the percent of
naphthalene that was recovered. Show your solution. (5 pts.)
6.9 / 4.7 x 100 = 146.80%

4. A 5.0 g salt-iodine mixture was subjected to sublimation. If the percent recovery was only
37% and 2.5% of the sublimated iodine was lost during recovery, determine the amount (in
grams) of the remaining recovered iodine. Show your solution. (5 pts.)
