SAF102-LECTURE 6: FIRE SAFETY MANAGEMENT

INTRODUCTION
RA 9514 – Fire Code of the Philippines, 2008:
- Identified in the Fire Safety Checklist
In case of fire:
- Identify areas of safe refuge where persons who are unable to go down a building
on their own can safely wait for help from the emergency responders.
- Designate evacuation areas for all personnel and students.
Fire Alarm Call Point – manual push or pull stations that are connected to the Fire Alarm
Detection System (FDAS).

FIRE SAFETY
1. A fire alarm system warns people when smoke, fire, carbon monoxide or other
fire-related emergencies are detected.
2. These alarms may be activated automatically from smoke detectors, and heat
detectors or may also be activated via manual fire alarm activation devices such
as manual call points or pull stations.
3. Alarms can be either motorized bells or wall mountable sounders or horns.
4. They can also be speaker strobes which sound an alarm, followed by a voice
evacuation message which warns people inside the building not to use the
elevators.
5. Fire alarm sounders can be set to certain frequencies and different tones
including low, medium, and high, depending on the country and manufacturer of
the device.
6. Firewalls can be used to subdivide a building into separate fire areas and ae
constructed in accordance with the locally applicable building codes. Firewalls
are a portion of a building’s passive fire protection systems.
7. Firewalls can be used to separate high-value transformers at an electrical
substation in the event of a mineral oil tank rupture and ignition. The firewall
serves as a fire containment wall between one oil-filled transformer and other
neighboring transformers, building structures, and site equipment.

FIRE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

1. Keep doorways, corridors, and egress paths clear and unobstructed.
2. Make sure that all electrical appliances and cords are in good condition and MCL
approved. Do not overload electrical outlets. Use surge protected multi-outlet
power strips and extension cords when necessary. Never run them through
doorways or partitions, nor cover them with rugs.
3. Do not tamper with any fire system equipment such as smoke detectors, pull
stations or fire extinguishers.
4. Student participation in fire drills is mandatory.
5. Close the door if you are the last person to exit a room to reduce the fire’s spread
and damage.
6. Become aware of your classmates and note if they have not evacuated.
Immediately inform authorities if they are missing and/or may need assistance.
7. Familiarize yourself with the layout of the building. Escape routes are posted
throughout buildings in areas easily accessible to everyone.
8. Don’t waste time collecting personal items. Take yourself to safety as soon as
possible.
9. Elevators should not be used when evacuating a building. During a fire
emergency, always use the stairs.
10. The fire department will notify when it is safe to re-enter the building.
