PART I
REWRITE THIS CONVERSION TABLE IN YOUR NOTEBOOK
PART II : Use the reference for your solution.
(Thermodynamics-An-Engineering-Approach-5th-Ed.-Solution)

1. The acceleration of high-speed aircraft is sometimes expressed in g’s (in multiples of the standard
acceleration of gravity). Determine the upward force, in N, that a 100-kg man would experience in an aircraft
whose acceleration is 8 g’s. (Reference: Solution for 1-11)

2. Determine the atmospheric pressure at a location where the barometric reading is 830 mm Hg. Take the density
of mercury to be 13,600 kg/m3. (Reference: Solution for 1-43)

3. The maximum blood pressure in the upper arm of a healthy person is about 120 mm Hg. If a vertical tube open to
the atmosphere is connected to the vein in the arm of the person, determine how high the blood will rise in the
tube. Take the density of the blood to be 1050 kg/m3. (Reference: Solution for 1-65)

4. The reactive force developed by a jet engine to push an airplane forward is called thrust, and the thrust developed
by the engine of a Boeing 777 is about 85,000 lbf. Express this thrust in N and kgf.(Reference: Solution 1-90)

5. The hydraulic lift in a car repair shop has an output diameter of 30 cm and is to lift cars up to 2000 kg. Determine
the fluid gage pressure that must be maintained in the reservoir. (Reference: Solution for 1-68)

6. The basic barometer can be used to measure the height of a building. If the barometric readings at the top andat
the bottom of a building are 730 and 755 mm Hg, respectively, determine the height of the building. Take the
densitiesof air and mercury to be 1.18 kg/m3 and 13,600 kg/m3,
respectively. (Reference: Solution for 1-53)

7. At a certain location, wind is blowing steadily at 10 m/s. Determine the mechanical energy of air per unit mass and
the power generation potential of a wind turbine with 60-m-diameter blades at that location. Take the air density
to be 1.25 kg/m3. (Reference: Solution for 2-10)

8. A river flowing steadily at a rate of 240 m3/s is considered for hydroelectric power generation. It is determined that
a dam can be built to collect water and release it from an elevation difference of 50 m to generate power. Determine
how much power can be generated from this river water after the dam is filled. (Reference: Solution for 2-13)

9. Determine the work required to deflect a linear spring with a spring constant of 70 kN/m by 20 cm from its rest
position. (Reference: Solution for 2-29)

10. Electric power is to be generated by installing a hydraulic turbine–generator at a site 70 m below the free surface
of a large water reservoir that can supply water at a rate of 1500 kg/s steadily. If the mechanical power output of
the turbine is 800 kW and the electric power generation is 750 kW, determine the turbine efficiency and the
combined turbine– generator efficiency of this plant. Neglect losses in the
pipes. (Reference: Solution for 2-65)

11. Consider an electric motor with a shaft power output of 20 kW and an efficiency of 88 percent. Determine the rate
at which the motor dissipates heat to the room it is in when the motor operates at full load. In winter, this room is
normally heated by a 2-kW resistance heater. Determine if it is necessary to turn the heater on when the motor runs
at full load. (Reference: Solution for 2-71)

12. The inner and outer surfaces of a 0.5-cm-thick 2-m x 2-m window glass in winter are 10°C and 3°C, respectively.
If the thermal conductivity of the glass is 0.78 W/m · °C, determine the amount of heat loss, in kJ, through the
glass over a period of 5 h. What would your answer be if the glass were 1-cm thick? (Reference: Solution for
2-96)

13. Determine the specific volume of refrigerant-134a vapor at 0.9 MPa and 70°C based on (a) the ideal-gas equation,
(b) the generalized compressibility chart, and (c) data from tables. Also, determine the error involved in the first
two cases. (Reference: Solution for 3-86)

14. Determine the specific volume of superheated water vapor at 3.5 MPa and 450°C based on (a) the ideal-gas
equation, (b) the generalized compressibility chart, and (c) the steam tables. Determine the error involved in the
first two cases. (Reference: Solution for 3-88)

15. An insulated piston–cylinder device initially contains 0.3 m3 of carbon dioxide at 200 kPa and 27°C. An electric
switch is turned on, and a 110-V source supplies current to a resistance heater inside the cylinder for a period of
10 min. The pressure is held constant during the process, while the volume is doubled. Determine the current that
passes through the resistance heater. (Reference: Solution for 4-66)
