-./0134 5 INTRODUCTION
The SynchroTeq Plus unit allows controlling up to three OPEN and three CLOSE C/B coils
through ‘Select Before Operate’ (SBO) outputs.
SynchroTeq Plus offers 2 SPSBO module configurations:
Standard SPSBO module (default factory configuration) where all the SBO outputs
have a common power supply input connected to the C/B power supply providing a
‘source’ configuration. Please refer to STP030000-IG-en manual for the description of
this option.
Optional STP030304 module (must be selected at order) provides 6 potential free
isolated floating SBO outputs allowing ‘sink’ or ‘source’ control configuration.
The Floating SPSBO-F option (STP030304) provides 6 potential free isolated floating SBO
outputs.
This option must be selected at system order and substitutes the standard SPSBO module. It is
located in the same connectors AA-BB, but the pin assignment differs.
Since these outputs are floating type, they can either source coil current (coil common to 0V
supply) or sink coil current (coil common to +DC supply).
This isolated floating SBO outputs option allows the system to have the open/close circuits
powered from different power supplies.
This user guide provides engineers and technicians information to install the optional Floating
SPSBO-F module (STP030304).

In the SynchroTeq Plus, the coil output control command precision is +/- 10µs. However, it is important to
understand that the overall operation precision of the breaker depends on many parameters:
- C/B mechanical scatter: Each C/B has a natural mechanical deviation on his main chamber operating
times. This deviation is due to the overall imprecision in the mechanical moving parts of the breaker
(shafts, gears…). It is important to mention that the mechanical deviation we are talking about (generally
from 0.1ms up to several ms) refers to the “intrinsic” deviation of the mechanical operating times of the
breaker main chamber under constant operation circumstances (temperature, coil voltage, pressure,
humidity…).
- Availability of compensation data and their accuracy: Most of C/Bs are affected by the environmental
operating parameters. If these effects are not taken into consideration, the overall C/B operation
precision would be seriously degraded compared to the absolute mechanical scatter. The SynchroTeq Plus
is able to accurately compensate for all the operational parameters as long as the provided compensation
data (generally from the C/B manufacturer) is also accurate. The SynchroTeq Plus can compensate for the
ambient temperature variation, the DC coil voltage variation, the drive mechanism pressure variation (if
any). Also, the SynchroTeq Plus is embedded with powerful idle-time compensation algorithm that
predicts the effect of the idle-time on the main chamber operating mechanism. In general, this idle-time
compensation data is a field-built information as most of C/B manufacturers cannot provide it.
For example, let us assume the following situation:
- Circuit-breaker with a natural mechanical scatter of +/- 0.3ms under +15°C
- The only parameter that affects the mechanical operating time is the ambient temperature
- Ambient temperature operating range : from -20°C to +55°C
- No compensation curve for the ambient temperature is provided, but the C/B manufacturer stated that
the effect of the ambient temperature on the main chamber operating time is +/- 2ms
In this case, since no compensation data is provided, we can expect an overall C/B operation precision of +/-
2.31ms :
+/- 2ms for the ambient temperature variation
+/- 0.3ms for the mechanical scatter
+/- 0.01ms for the SynchroTeq Plus
Since the SPSBO-F module outputs are floating type, they can either source coil current (coil
common to 0V supply) or sink coil current (coil common to +DC supply). This feature allows
various and flexible wiring configurations as the examples shown in Figure 3.

the system to have the open/close circuits powered from different power supplies.
In most of the cases, the main substation battery supplies the CB Close coils and the optional
integrated bypass module (V1P/V1N) as well as the SynchroTeq Plus unit (V2P/V2N).
The CB Open coils are powered by an additional and dedicated battery (VOpen+/VOpen-).
Figure 6 below illustrates a substation power distribution example, with dual Open/Close coil
batteries.

SPECIFIC DUAL ‘OPEN/CLOSE’ COIL POWER SUPPLIES APPLICATION USER GUIDE 2019-02-21
When using 2 separated batteries for Open and Close CB coils, an external relay must be wired
to connect the appropriate battery to SynchroTeq Plus S1/S2 inputs for CB coil voltage
supervision and compensation feature.
The principle is to connect to S1/S2 the coil battery of the next operation. For instance, if the
CB is in the Close position, the open coil battery has to be connected to the S1/S2 inputs in
order to compensate correctly for next opening operation.
To do so, the external relay (KWP) is activated by the CB auxiliary contact 52a from phase A.
Figure 7 below illustrates how to wire the KWP relay. When the CB is closed, the 52a_A contact
is activated, and then the ‘Open’ battery is connected to the S1/S2 inputs through the NO relay
contacts. When the CB is opened, the 52a_A auxiliary contact is released, and the relay
switches to the NC contacts connecting the ‘Close’ battery to the S1/S2 inputs.
