QUESTION 1 [100 MARKS]

Module 1

The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) set three routes towards becoming a professional
engineer. Out of all the three, Route C is the most popular route taken to become a Professional
Engineer.

Route C requires the candidate to sit for the Professional Interview (PI) conducted by the
Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), where the candidate will be assessed on 18
competency elements as stated in the form IEM PI A401.

As a group, you are required to:


1. Select 2 engineering disciplines from mechanical engineer, electrical engineer,
electronics engineer, civil engineer, or chemical engineers.

2. Choose 1 career pathway for each discipline chosen (for example mechanical
engineer working in manufacturing company and electrical engineer working with
electricity utility company).

3. Then discuss and elaborate the types of activities that can be done for both the
career pathways chosen to achieve all the required 18 competency elements as
stated in the form IEM PI A401. In the discussion for relevant competencies, you
must include how the chosen activities address the commitment towards sustainable
development and reducing the impact of their actions on the health, safety,
environment, and society.

You may research on the pathway of the chosen engineering discipline through the internet, or
by interviewing any engineers you know.

QUESTION 2 [100 MARKS]

Module 2

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) has lay out 17 global goals for the
betterment and sustainable future. Two of the goals are Sustainable Cities and Communities,
and Reduced Inequalities. You and your friends have recently formed a social enterprise
startup, focusing on these two goals. Your first project is to come up with a sustainable
programme or solution that would tackle the issues or problems related to these two goals.

Choose one (1) community and its neighbourhood that is facing problem related to these
two goals. This community will become your target beneficiary. Conduct thorough analysis on
the actual problems that they are facing and come up with a programme or solution to overcome
their problems. Discuss in detail the problems that the community is facing in regard to the
inequalities and sustainability issues, You may conduct interview, discussion or survey with
the target beneficiary or relevant stakeholder.

As a group, you are required to:


1. Identify and choose a community that is in need of help in the two SDG mentioned
earlier, such as the blind community, homeless, disabled, B40 group, etc.
2. Propose a programme or solution that would benefit your target community. The
programme must be significant, comprehensive, sustainable and give positive impact
to the whole target community
3. Discuss the challenges that you might encounter in implementing the
programme/solution and identify issues related to (among others):
• Environmental impact
• Health and safety aspect
• Legal, societal and/or ethical issues
• Financial sustainability

Module 3

Communication is imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some


other medium. Effective Communication is the ability to convey information to another
effectively and efficiently. Engineers with good verbal, nonverbal and written communication
skills help facilitate the sharing of information between people within a company and country
in large for its benefit.

Discuss with two (2) actual case studies in any country on the communication of
engineer(s) that has brought good benefits to an organization or the country in large with
consideration of sustainable development, public and societal impact, health and safety issues,
through implementation of good communication attributes in the organization,
particularly in handling issues and situations caused by Covid-19 pandemic.

Your discussion should compare and contrast how the communication contributes and changes
the organization situation.
