Quarter 2
S.Y., 2021-2022
WEEK 5 NAME:________________
OBJECTIVE:

1. Describe the changes in mineral components and texture of rocks due to changes in pressure and temperature
(metamorphism).
2. Compare and contrast the formation o the different types of igneous rocks.

Metamorphism
occurs because
some minerals are
stable only under
certain conditions of
pressure and
temperature. When
pressure and
temperature
change, chemical
reactions occur to
cause the minerals in
the rock to change to
an assemblage that
is stable at the new
pressure and
temperature
conditions.

The two main categories of igneous rocks are extrusive and intrusive. Extrusive rocks are formed on the
surface of the Earth from lava, which is magma that has emerged from underground. Intrusive rocks are
formed from magma that cools and solidifies within the crust of the planet.

Activity:

Create a poster
explaining the process
of metamorphism.

CREATIVITY: 30 PTS.

PERSUASIVENESS: 20
PTS.

WEEKs 6 to 7

NAME:________________
1. Describe where the Earth's internal heat comes from.
2. Describe how magma is formed (magmatism).

There are three main

sources of heat in the
deep earth: (1) heat
from when the planet
formed and
accreted, which has
not yet been lost; (2)
frictional heating,
caused by denser
core material sinking
to the center of the
planet; and (3) heat
from the decay of
radioactive elements.
What were the main sources of Earth's original internal heat?
Radioactive potassium, uranium and thorium are thought to be the three main sources of heat in the Earth's interior,
aside from that generated by the formation of the planet.
What is the source of Earth's internal energy?
Most of the energy in the Earth system comes from just a few sources: solar energy, gravity, radioactive decay, and
the rotation of the Earth. Solar energy drives many surface processes such as winds, currents, the hydrologic cycle, and
the overall climate system.

Describe how magma is formed (magmatism).

As the denser tectonic plate subducts, or sinks below, or the less-dense tectonic plate, hot rock from below can
intrude into the cooler plate above. This process transfers heat and creates magma. Over millions of years, the magma
in this subduction zone can create a series of active volcanoes known as a volcanic arc.
Virtually all of the igneous rocks that we see on Earth are derived from magmas that formed from partial melting of
existing rock, either in the upper mantle. Evidence for magmatic activity is usually found in the form of igneous rocks –
rocks that have formed from magma.

WEEK 7 NAME:______________

OBJECTIVE:
Describe the different ways of how representative animals reproduce.
Asexual reproduction in animals occurs through fission, budding, fragmentation, and parthenogenesis.
Sexual reproduction may involve fertilization inside the body or in the external environment. ... Sexual
reproduction starts with the combination of a sperm and an egg in a process called fertilization.

There are two types of reproduction: asexual and sexual reproduction. Though asexual reproduction is
faster and more energy efficient, sexual reproduction better promotes genetic diversity through new
combinations of alleles during meiosis and fertilization.
Create an infomercial about the reproduction of animals:

Informecial should include the explanation on the importance of knowing the processes involved in
animal reproduction.. This will serve as your written Task.

Performance Task: the Video presentation itself==50 points

Content 35 points
Creativuty (Visual effects/Sound/pictures) 15
points

Written Task is the explanation included in the video.

OBJECTIVE:
Describe the process of genetic engineering
Evaluate the benefits and risks of using GMO’s.

INTRODUCTION
Genetic engineering is the process of using recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology to alter the genetic makeup of an
organism. ... Genetic engineering involves the direct manipulation of one or more genes. Most often, a gene from another
species is added to an organism's genome to give it a desired phenotype.

Stages of genetic engineering to include:

1. identify section of DNA that contains required gene from source chromosome,
2. extract required gene,
The benefits of using GMOs
3. insert required gene into vector/bacterial plasmid, include crops having higher
4. insert plasmid into host cell, harvest yields which can feed
5. grow transformed cells to produce a GM organism. more people in the world, and
making food more nutritional. The
risks of using GMOs include both
the unknown long term risks of
eating GMO crops and the negative
effects that they can have on an
environment.

What are the risks and benefits of

GMOs?

The most notable GMO risks to

humans are the potential
development of allergens to GM
related crops and toxicity from GM
crops. However, studies also show
GM crops have benefits including the
increased nutritional value in foods.

What are the new “unexpected effects” and health risks posed by genetic engineering?

 Toxicity. Genetically engineered foods are inherently unstable. ...
