Chapter 1: Hormones in the Male and

Female Reproductive Systems

I. LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Lesson Standard:
Organisms as having feedback mechanisms. Which are coordinated by the nervous and
endocrine system.
Learning Competencies:
 Identify the hormones in female and male reproductive system
 Describe the function of each hormones present on the endocrine system
 Explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male reproductive system.

II. LESSON PROPER:

Hormones in the male and female reproductive systems

Hormones are chemical compounds that control and regulate the entire mechanism to
the body throughout the lifespan of an individual, they are secreted by the pituitary
gland of the endocrine System that directly affects the male and female reproductive
systems. The target tissues (testes and ovaries) likewise elicit reactions to other target
organs.

THE PITUITARY GLAND

Hormones associated with the reproductive system.
EndocrineGland Hormone Target Tissue Reaction of the target tissue
(source of Secreted
hormone)
MALE
Hypothalamus Gonadotropin Pituitary Gland Triggered production of luteinizing
releasing (Anterior) hormone (LH) and follicle-
hormone stimulating hormone (FSH)
(GnRH)
Testes Testosterone Most Tissues Aids in sperm cell production and
maintains functional reproductive
organs, secondary sex characteristics,
and sexual behavior
PituitaryGland (Anterior) Luteinizing Testes Synthesis and production of
Hormone (LH) testosterone

PituitaryGland (Anterior) Follicle Seminiferous Promotes spermatogenesis (sperm

stimulating production)

(FSH)

FEMALE

Hypothalamus Gonadotropin Pituitary Gland Triggered production

releasing hormone (Anterior) of luteinizing hormone
(GnRH) (LH) and follicle-
stimulating hormone
(FSH)
Pituitary Gland Oxytocin Uterus and mammary Increases uterine
(Posterior) gland contractions and
breast milk release
PituitaryGland Luteinizing Hormone Ovaries Egg production
(Anterior) (LH)

PituitaryGland Follicle stimulating Ovaries Promotes follicle

(Anterior) hormone (FSH) maturation and
estrogen secretion
Ovaries Progesterone and Most tissues Aid in uterine and
estrogen mammary gland
development and
function, external
genitalia structure,
secondary sex
characteristics, sexual
behavior, and
menstrual cycle

Secondary Sex Characteristics

Hormones are also responsible for the appearance and development of secondary sex
characteristics. Secondary sex characteristics are features that appear during puberty. Unlike the
primary SCX characteristics, 1.c., the sex organs, which are already present at birth, the
secondary sex characteristics are not directly necessary for reproduction.

Activity : Briefly explain each questions below.

1. Explain the concept of homeostasis in your own words.

2. What is a hormone?

3. Describe the function of one hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary and posterior
pituitary.
