Goals of the Teacher Education Program:

Graduates of the Teacher Education Program have the ability to:

1. relate education to larger historical, social, cultural and political processes;


2. use wide range of teaching methodologies to effectively facilitate learning in various types of
environment;
3. device alternative teaching approaches for diverse learners;
4. plan lessons with appropriate instructional materials for effective delivery and assessment of learning
outcomes;
5. build a strong character reflecting professional and ethical teaching standards;
6. grow personally by pursuing lifelong learning.
Objectives of the Elementary Education (BEED) Program:

At the end of the course, the graduates must be able to:

1. interpret human developmental growth to effectively manage elementary learners;


2. discuss comprehensively knowledge of various learning areas in the elementary curriculum;
3. design and implement appropriate tools and procedures to assess learning in the practice;
4. carry out research activities to contribute to the development of respective fields of practice;
5. interact effectively and independently in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
6. use both Filipino and English in oral and written communications;
7. carry oneself professionally, ethically and with social responsibility;
8. preserve and promote Filipino historical and cultural heritage.

II. COURSE TITLE: Teaching Science in the Primary Grades (Biology and Chemistry)

III. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course includes understanding of spiraling basic science concepts and application of science
inquiry in Chemistry and Biology and the use of teaching strategies in elementary science, development of
instructional materials and assessment. Content topics in Chemistry include Properties and Structure of
Matter and Changes that Matter Undergo. In Biology topics include Parts and Functions of Animals and
Plants, Heredity: Inheritance and Variation, Biodiversity and Evolution and Ecosystems.

V. CONTACT HOURS / WEEK: 3 hours/week

TOTAL TIME ALLOTMENT: 54 hours/semester

At the end the course, the students should:

1. participate in skill and strategies used in hands-on science approaches;


2. be provided with opportunities to design and conduct investigations and experiments;
3. be able to utilize appropriate teaching instructional formats for teaching science in the elementary
classroom;
4. identify and demonstrate evaluative procedures for assessing science learning;
5. plan, organize, teach, and critique science lessons;
6. enhance their science knowledge base as it relates to content; and
7. examine ways to integrate science with other disciplines.

The student shall be evaluated based from the following criteria:


1. Class Standing. It includes attendance, quizzes, performance (recitation and presentation), and
written outputs (assignment, essays, and research works). 50%
2. Major Examinations. It includes midterm and final exams. 30%
3. Project. It includes research paper, and other periodical outputs. 20%

XII. CLASSROOM POLICIES:

1. Students shall take the two major examinations (midterm and final) on time.
2. Students are only allowed to have ten absences in a semester or he/she may be automatically be
dropped in the subject. Students who are late beyond 15 minutes are considered absent.
3. Submission of course requirements shall be scheduled by the instructor before the final examination.
4. Mobile phones and other gadgets and devices are not allowed inside the classroom during the
duration of class.
5. Any form of cheating is strongly prohibited.
