0 SCOPE:
This procedure covers the Normalizing Heat Treatment of swaged tube
ends manufactured for use in Boilers designed with the requirement of
ASME Section I or IBR code.
2.0 PURPOSE :
The Normalizing heat treatment for Carbon steel tube swaged end is carried
out to regain the original physical properties of the material affected due to
swaging.
3.0 EQUIPMENT :
The Local normalizing heat treatment is carried out by keeping the tube
ends on the temporary bed of resistance coils placed on cerwool blankets.
The supported tube ends are with the help of resistance coils, covered by
cerwool blanket as a insulating material. The job thermocouples
( Minimum three nos.) are attached to the tube ends, located in such a way
to cover entire bed of @60 tubes. Thus heating of only swaged ends
(applied with refractory Accoset-15 cement paste uniformly on swaged
ends ) to avoid oxidation is carried out directly with the help of resistance
coils.
4.0 TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER & RECORDS:
The heating rate is controlled with a panel consist of manually operated
temperature Controller. The job thermocouples are attached to Temperature
recorder for measurement of temperature and recording. The recorder is
calibrated once in six months while the thermocouples are calibrated once
in a year.
5.0 HEATING:
The tube ends shall be heated at the rate of @400 Degree C per hour max.
up to Normalizing temperature of 930 +/- 20 C
6.0 HOLDING:
The tube ends shall be held at Normalizing temperature of 930 +/- 20 C for
thirty minutes with the help of temperature controlling panel.
7.0 COOLING:
After the soaking period is over the controlling panel is switched off to stop
the heating and top layer of ceramic blanket ( insulating material ) is
removed immediately thus exposing the tube ends to atmosphere for air
cooling up to room temperature. The recorder shall continue to record the
temperature to room temp. The top resistance coils are then removed.
8.0 INSPECTION :
The swaged tube ends shall be checked visually for the surface finish
condition and if necessary cleaned with wire brush.
Normalizing chart shall be submitted to QC for review and acceptance after
verification with reference to HT cycle issued as per clause no.5,6 & 7.
One test sample for each job shall be offered after Normalizing for
Hardness test as per ASME code. The test results shall meet the
requirements of tube material specification.
