In an educational article entitled “Modular distance learning modality:

Challenges of teachers in teaching amid the Covid-19 pandemic”
authored by Castroverde, Felicisimo of Leyte Normal University, Philippines
(simoy101@gmail.com) and Acala, Michell of Leyte Normal University,
Philippines (acalamichell@gmail.com), published by thee International
Journal of Research Studies in Education 2021 Volume 10 Number 8, 7-15,
they identified the challenges of teachers in the use of modular distance
learning modality amidst pandemic and how teachers cope with these
challenges.

The challenges of teachers were identified based on how they plan,

prepare and distribute modules, monitor students’ learning, check, evaluate
outputs, and provide feedback on students’ performance. Furthermore,
teachers used various ways to cope with the challenges encountered in
modular distance learning modality such as time management, innovating
teaching strategies, adapting to the changes brought by the new normal
trend in education, being flexible, providing alternative plans, being
optimistic, patient, and equipping oneself with the necessary skills for the
new normal ways of education.(Noting this study of teachers’ challenges do
not limit only at Leyte but it happens all through out the education system,
just like in our division-the Zamboanga City Division. As a classroom teacher,
the distance learning modality in particular with the modular gave out a 360
degree shift from the usual tasks of a classroom teacher, from the
preparations of the modules, distribution and retrieval of the modules,
monitoring students’ learning, giving feedback to students and parents and
sometimes to the subject teacher concern.)

How teachers cope with the challenges they encounter in modular

distance learning modality - As teachers face different challenges in the
implementation of Modular Distance Learning Modality by the Department
of Education, they strive to overcome such challenges through different
approaches. Based on the results of the study, the secondary school
teachers under the Division of Tacloban City have various coping strategies
on the different challenges that they encounter. Time management is one
of the steps to ease the tasks that a teacher is handling daily. Through
providing a schedule of activities and balancing tasks, teachers are able to
deal with tasks in ways that they know which to prioritize. The
accomplishment of tasks such as preparing lessons, the printing of modules,
and checking of modules will be achieved if a teacher knows how to spend
his/her time efficiently. ( Such result of the survey is very evident to me
as a teacher who witnessed this work among my colleagues not to brag my
own doings, with the enormous tasks that needs to accomplish, we teachers
are trying to look for mechanisms to cope with the stressing pressures of the
modular distance learning, some of us are attending wellness exercise of
body and mind, doing sort of meditations and reflections, having breaks
and chit-chat with colleagues are just some of the ways teachers are doing
in facing the challenges brought by the distance learning.)

The impact of COVID-19 does not only concern the teachers but also
the students, parents, and others involved in the teaching and learning
process. Accepting and embracing the challenges of times keeps an
individual positive amidst everything. (This is a reality that everyone must
accept and try to look for ways by embracing the certainty brought by this
new normal stylishness of education. As a teacher, being positive help, me
lessens the burdens and it helps me what to focus on and how to deal with
things serenely without triggering mental stress.)

Coordinating with colleagues and other school authorities on what to

do when a problem arises concerning the modular distance learning
approach is also helpful in addressing such issues. Discussing with an
immediate supervisor so that he/she can bring them up during their
executive meeting opens collaboration and unity in solving various
problems concerning the students’ welfare and quality of learning. Hence,
it is good that teachers know how to innovate some strategies, methods,
and approaches like home visitation and online distance discussion. (We
teachers in our department are having professional meetings once a month
or as the need arises to share experiences, recommendations and best
practices in dealing with the routinely tasks of teachers in the modular
distance learning. We do also recommendation to our superior some ways
to meet the needs of the parents and students through the feedbacks that
was consolidated to ensure that both parents and teachers are aware of
what to do as well as to keep everyone safe from the effects of the COVID-
19 pandemic.)

The conduct of webinars for equipping teachers with the current trends
of new normal education also helps educators in adapting to the changes
of times. These steps will help the educational system in our country to
continue providing quality education to learners deemed to be the future
of society. (I seamlessly in agreement that equipping educators to the new
trends in the education process will eventually help us adapt to the the
changes brought by the pandemic and adjust to the needs of our
stakeholders and the society as a whole.
