Learning Target: Activity Numbers:
Concept notes:
• The concentration of a solution is a measure of the amount of solute that has been dissolved in a
given amount of solvent or solution.
• It can be expressed in forms such as: percent by volume, percent by mass, parts per million,
molality, molarity, and mole fraction.
(%v, %m, ppm, m, M, X)
• Formulas:
mass of solute
percent by mass= x 100 %
mass of solution
volume of solute
percent by volume= x 100 %
volume of solution
mass of solute
ppm= x 106
mass of solution
moles of solute (mol)
Molarity ( M )=
liters of solution(L)
Direction: Analyze and answer the following problems.. Use the 4 SFs periodic table list if needed. Show
your solution.
1) What is the concentration in ppm of a solution made with 18.5 g of salt and 125000.00 g of
water?
2) What is the concentration in ppb of calcium in a 97.0 grams soil sample if it is found that there
is 13.0 grams of calcium in the sample?
A. 1.34 x 10^10 ppb B.1.34 x 10^9 ppb C. 1.34 x10^8 ppb D. 1.34 x 10^5 ppb
3) What is the percent by mass of 5.0 g of iron (II) sulfate dissolved in 75.0 g of water?\
5) An experiment requires a solution that is 80% methyl alcohol by volume. What volume of
methyl alcohol should be added to 200 mL of water to make this solution?
7) Determine the molarity of the following solution: 4.35 moles of KMnO4 are dissolved in
enough water to give 750 mL of solution.
8) What is the molarity of a solution made with 126.32 g of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) dissolved
to make 874.2 mL of a solution?
9) A solution is prepared by mixing 100.0 g of water, H2O, and 100.0 g of ethanol, C2H5OH.
Determine the mole fraction of water.
11) Calculate the molality of 25.0 grams of KBr dissolved in 750.0 mL pure water.
12) Calculate the molality of a solution containing 16.5 g of dissolved naphthalene (C10H8) in
54.3 g benzene (C6H6).
