1. Answer any ONE of the following:

Find the value of p(2) - p(-3), if p(x) = 3x³ + 4x² – 4x – 12.
Find the difference between the remaining zeros obtained, when the polynomial x³ + 2x² – 9x – 18 = 0 has -2 as one of its zeroes.
Sol.(i) p(2) = 3(2)³ + 4(2)² – 4(2) – 12 = 3(8) + 4(4) - 8 – 12 = 24 + 8 – 12 = 20
p(-3) = 3(-3)³ + 4(-3)² – 4(-3) – 12 = 3(-27) + 36 + 12 – 12 = -81 + 36 + 12 – 12 = -45
⇒p(2) – p(-3) = 20 – (-45) = 20 + 45 = 65
(ii) Consider the polynomial p(x) = x³ + 2x² – 9x – 18
x = -2 is one of the zeroes of the given polynomial
Then,
p(x) = x²(x + 2) – 9(x + 2)
⇒p(x) = (x² – 9)(x + 2)
⇒p(x) = (x – 3)(x + 3)(x + 2)
The roots are x = 3, -3, -2
Difference between the two remaining roots other than -2 is 3 – (-3) = 6 or (-3) - 3 = -6

9. Answer any ONE of the following:

In   △ PQR,   PQ   =  9. 4 cm,   QR   =  11. 6 cm   and   PR   =  12. 8 cm.  X,  Y  and  Z

are   the  mid − points   of   OP,   OQ   and   OR   respectively   as   shown   in   the   figure.

Find   the   perimeter   of   △ XYZ.

PQRS   is  a  parallelogram   in   which   PS   =  15 cm.   If  T  is   the  mid − point

of   QR   and   PT   is   the   bisector   of  ∠P,   find   the   length   of   RS.

Sol. (i)  In   △ PQR,

PQ   =  9. 4 cm,   QR   =  11. 6 cm   and   PR   =  12. 8 cm.

In   △ POQ,

X  and  Y  are   the  mid − points   of    OP   and   OQ.

∴   By  mid − point   theorem,

1 1
XY   =   PQ   =     ×  9. 4  =  4. 7 cm
2 2

Similarly,

In   △ QOR,  Y  and  Z  are   the  mid − points   of   OQ   and   OR.

∴   By  mid − point   theorem,

1 1
YZ   =   QR   =     ×  11. 6  =  5. 8 cm
2 2

In   △ POR,  X  and  Z  are   the  mid − points   of    OP   and   OR.

∴   By  mid − point   theorem,

1 1
XZ   =   PR   =     ×  12. 8  =  6. 4 cm
2 2

Perimeter   of   △ XYZ   =   XY   +   YZ   +   XZ   =  4. 7 cm   +  5. 8 cm   +  6. 4  cm   =  16. 9 cm

(ii)  Since   PT   is   the   bisector   of  ∠P,

∠SPT =  ∠ TPQ.

But,  ∠SPT =  ∠ PTQ   (Alternate   interior   angles   as  PS ∥ QR)

⇒ ∠TPQ =  ∠ PTQ

Hence,   PQ   =   TQ   (Sides   opposite   to   equal   angles)

1
But   TQ   =   QR
2

1
∴   PQ   =   QR
2

Also   QR   =   PS   (Opposite   sides   of  a  parallelogram. )

1 1
∴   PQ   =   PS   =     ×  15  =  7. 5cm
2 2

⇒   RS   =  7. 5 cm   (Opposite   sides   of  a  parallelogram)

13. Athul and Mariya are throwing balls against each other.
Let h(t) =3t² - 5t - 2 represents the height of the ball thrown by Athul, where t represents the time taken in seconds.

Both of them threw the ball at same time. The time taken for Mariya’s ball to reach the ground is twice the time taken for Athul’s
ball to reach the ground.
Find the time at which Mariya’s ball touches the ground.
If the height attained by Mariya’s ball can be represented as 2t² - 8, then express it as product of two linear factors.
Sol. (i) 3t 2
  −  5t  −  2  =  0

2
⇒ 3t   −  6t  +  t  −  2  =  0

⇒ 3t (t  −  2)  +  1 (t  −  2)  =  0

⇒ (3t  +  1) (t  −  2)  =  0

1
⇒ t  =   − ,  2
3

Since   the   time   cannot   be   negative,  t =  2.

That   is   time   taken   by   Athul’s  ball   to   touch   the   ground   =  2s

Time   taken   by   Mariya’s  ball   to   touch   the   ground   =  4s

2 2
(ii) 2t   −  8  =  2t   −  4

2 2
This   is   of   the   form  a   −  b   =   (a  −  b) (a  +  b)

there   are   two   palm   trees  A  and  B  at  a  distance   of  AB = 25√3m.

Similarly   has   two   Banyan   trees   at   the   same   distance   of  25√3m  as   shown   at

C  and  D.   AB   subtends  ∠AOB = 120°  at   the   center  O,   the   perpendicular

distance   of   AC   from   center   is  7m  the   radius   of   the   circle   is  25m.

What   is   the   value   of   angle  ∠ OCD  ?

What is distance between the trees A and C?

Sol. (i)  Equal   chords   of  a  circle   subtend   equal   angles   at   the   center
Thus,  ∠ COD   =  ∠ AOB   =  120°

Since   OC   =   OD  ,

△ OCD   is   an   isosceles   triangle.

180° – 120° 60°
Hence  ∠ OCD   =  ∠ ODC   =     =     =  30°
2 2

(ii)  We   know   that   the   perpendicular   from   the   center   of  a  circle   to  a  chord   bisects   the   chord.

Hence   AP   =   PC

From   figure   we   know   that   OA   =  25m,   OP   =  7m

2 2 2
Then   AP   =   OA   −   OP   =  625  −  49  =  576
