Ways to express wants and preferences

Would like
1. Use Would like + to V (b.inf): to politely express or ask about wants. (để bộc lộ mong muốn
của mình hoặc hỏi về mong muốn của một ai đó một cách lịch sự)

I’d like to go to the movies. (Tôi muốn đi xem phim)

(I would like = I’d like)

Would she like to see The Dancer? (Cô ấy có muốn xem bộ phim The Dancer không?)
o Yes, she would
o No, she wouldn’t.

What would your friends like to do? (Những người bạn của anh thích làm gì?)

He wouldn’t like to see the movie. (Ông ấy không muốn xem bộ phim ấy)

Would rather:
1. Use Would rather + V(b.inf): to express or ask about a preference between two or more
activities. (Để bộc lộ sở thích của mình hoặc hỏi về sở thích của người khác khi chọn lựa giữa
các hoạt động: Thích cái gì hơn)

 Would your children rather see an animated film or an action film? (Các con của bạn
thích xem phim hoạt hình hay phim hành động hơn?

 Would they rather see a musical?

o Yes, they would.
o No, they wouldn’t. /No, they’d rather not.

 What would you rather do: go to a movie or a play? (Bạn thích làm gì hơn: đi xem
phim hay kịch)

 She’d rather see a less violent film than Gangs of New York. (Cô ấy thích xem một bộ
phim ít bạo lực hơn phim Gangs of New York.

Use than with would rather to contrast preferences. (So sánh giữa hai sở thích)
I’d rather stream a movie than go to the movies.
 I’d rather stay at home than go to Bana Hills

2. Use Would rather + not + V(b.inf): to express a negative preference. (để bộc lộ mong muốn
của mình: thích không làm một cái gì đó hơn – Giống cấu trúc của chữ “Thà” trong tiếng
Việt)
We’d rather not watch TV tonight. (Chúng tôi thà không coi TV tối nay còn hơn).
